Chapter 9
The doctors advanced upon Layla, each armed with different weapons and tools. Needles, scalpels, even a drill. Layla lay on the operation table that she had been shackled too. She lay still, staring at the ceiling, completely silent.
"Layla, count down from ten." One of the doctors ordered, pressing the drill against her ribs.
"Ten." Layla sighed calmly, continuing to look at the ceiling.
"Nine. Eight." She paused momentarily, trying to remember what was happening.
What was she doing here? Why was she here? What was happening?
"Continue."
"Seven, s-" Layla was cut off by a scream.
Her own blood-curdling scream. A scream that made your hairs stand on end and sent shivers up your spine. It was a scream of complete agony.
Layla threw her copy of the dread doctors across the room. She swallowed, her throat feeling like sandpaper. That had to have been the most elaborate and vivid daydream that she had ever had. Because clearly nothing like that had ever happened to her. Right?
She threw on clothes, trying to rid herself of the images that seemed to be branded in her brain. Bounding down the stairs, she went to shout out to her dad and Stiles, but she was just a minute too late. They had already gone. Cursing, Layla snatched her car keys off the kitchen counter and walked outside.
In all honesty she didn't think she was fit to drive to school, but she didn't have much choice.
--
Layla spotted Scott and Theo ahead and went to join them. Before she could even say 'hi', Theo bounded towards her and wrapped his arms around her.
"Oh thank god, your okay." He mumbled into her hair.
Layla's eyebrows furrowed. Clearing her throat she spoke to him. "Of course I am Theo. Why wouldn't I be?" She asked as he finally gave her space to breathe.
"No reason." He answered quickly, shaking his head. "None, nope."
"Okay..." She said slowly, her eyebrows still furrowed. "Hey Scott." She smiled as she walked over and hugged him.
"Hey Layla." He replied returning the hug. "You okay?" He whispered in her ear, referring to last night.
"Peachy." She snorted.
"Layla." He said, giving her a stern yet worried look.
"Seriously Scotty, I'm fine. You worry too much." Layla replied, ruffling his hair.
Scott just laughed and rolled his eyes. Layla laughed with him, but she stopped when she caught sight of the book in his hands. The dread doctors.
"So we're looking for abnormal behaviour?" Theo asked, now that he was finally calm.
"Anyone acting a little off or a little weird." Scott replied.
"Isn't everyone a little weird in High School?" Layla scoffed.
"Yeah good point." Scott laughed.
The three of them set of towards the steps, Theo a few steps behind Layla and Scott.
"You do realise that Tracy went on a killing spree after reading that?" Theo said, catching up with them.
"You think it's a bad idea?" Scott asked.
"I think Malia getting nearly run down by a car is a bad idea." Theo retorted. "That's why you guys haven't finished it yet, right?"
Layla gulped and clenched her jaw. It was true, she hadn't finished it, but she was further than the rest of the group.
"We're going to." She said softly.
"Scott." Theo sighed, walking alongside them. " I came here hoping to find a pack. Wasn't planning on watching one fall apart."
"Well it's all we've got." Scott replied.
"Then I'll read it too." Theo said.
Layla sighed.
--
"My moms book club usually has more wine." Lydia commented as the group stared at the multiple copies of the dread doctors that sat on the glass table.
"Well, they probably also didn't read books that caused violent hallucinations." Stiles said, shrugging.
""That's why Malia is here." Scott said gesturing towards Malia.
"So none of us go running in to traffic?" Kira asked arching her eyebrows.
"Or worse." Scott added.
"Like what happened to Judy. Chapter 14." Layla said softly. She had been silent for most of the time, but couldn't help but blurt that sentence out.
Lydia picked up a copy of the book. "Maybe I should let my mother read it. She wouldn't remember a girl with a tail leaping off the ceiling and attacking everyone."
"Well if it works." Stiles said.
"It has to."
"What does that mean?" Scott asked.
"I think I saw them during my surgery." Lydia replied.
Layla suddenly felt like she was gasping for air. Should she tell the group about her dreams of the doctors? About how often they are?
"When I look at the cover of the book. It's almost like..." Lydia trailed off.
"A memory trying to resurface itself." Theo finished.
"Yeah." Lydia said.
"Isn't that what Valack wanted when he wrote it?" Kira asked while the others nodded.
"If they did something to me. I wanna know what it is." Lydia stated firmly.
Layla sat in silence as she watched the others collect copies of the book. They all sat and began to read it. Her stomach felt queasy and her head felt like it was going to explode. She took deep breaths and tried to calm herself, but nothing was working. Layla's vision began to blur and the world around her seemed to fade away. Reality seems to fade away.
"Anybody feel anything yet?" Scott asked.
And that was the last thing she heard. Layla slumped to the ground, her copy of the book falling to the ground beside her.
"Layla!" Theo yelled kneeling beside her. "Layla, wake up."
He didn't know what was happening to her. She couldn't possibly be remembering something, could she? They wouldn't have done anything to her, right? They promised they wouldn't. Theo told them. They could have anything they wanted, except her. She was his.
Kira and Scott knelt beside their best friend and tried to wake her up. But nothing worked. Layla couldn't hear them.
--
Layla sat and looked around.
Blackness.
That was all she could see.
"Hello?" She yelled into the darkness.
"Layla." A voice called. It was like a whisper. Soft and melodic.
"Hello? Where are you?" Layla shouted, craning her neck, but to no avail.
"Layla." The voice called again.
"Mom?" Layla said, her voice breaking.
"Help me." The voice said.
--
Layla bolted upright, gasping.
"Layla, are you okay?"
Layla blinked and found everyone staring at her.
"Fine." She lied. "I must've just fallen asleep."
"Layla, we couldn't wake you up." Scott said.
"You know me. Deep sleeper." She said, laughing nervously.
But all she could think about was the voice.
Calling out to her.
One that sounded exactly like her mom.
