Chapter 6
Layla arrived at the police station with Deaton, Scott, Stiles and Theo. Staring through the door that was ajar, Layla could see blood smeared along the ground.
That was not a good sign.
Stiles and Layla's father was there but he seemed unscathed, he had just been paralysed.
Walking into the room to their right they found Lydia lying on the floor covered in her own blood. Kira was kneeling beside her, applying pressure to the wound. Theo ran forward, wrapping his belt around her stomach. Layla kneeled behind him, putting Lydia's head on her lap.
"Lydia." Layla whimpered, as her best friend attempted to smile through the pain. Lydia's mother ran in, kneeling down beside Layla, attempting to comfort her daughter.
"Help Tracy." Lydia told Stiles.
"The bleeding is slowing." Theo announced.
"It's not slowing enough." Layla shouted.
"Layls." Lydia said weakly. "I'm fine."
Layla shook her head but didn't comment. Minutes later the ambulance arrived. They took Lydia and placed her on a stretcher, taking her to the hospital. Layla suddenly felt like she couldn't breath. The very thought of losing Lydia, panicked her. Her vision began to blur.
"Hey Layla. Layla look at me."
Layla did as the voice said. She blinked several times, her vision eventually focusing.
"Theo." she sighed.
"Come on, we're going to the hospital." He said, taking a hold of Layla's hand.
---
"How is she?" Layla asked anxiously as Melissa walked towards the group of teens.
"She's going into surgery now. But it's going to be a while." Melissa announced. "But Theo you probably saved her life." She added, gesturing to when Theo wrapped his belt around Lydia's waist.
"Any other supernatural details I should know about, or do we just stitch her up and hope for the best?"
"It was the tail." Kira said.
"Tracy cut her with the tail. If that helps." Scott elaborated.
"But it wasn't just her. There were also the men in the masks." Malia said.
Nobody commented.
---
Slowly everyone began to filter away from the hospital. Scott and Kira left together, Stiles and Malia following.
"Layla, you coming?" Her brother asked,
Layla went to speak when Theo grabbed hold of her wrist. He smiled at her and Layla nodded.
"No. I'll be home later." She told her brother.
Stiles didn't look happy about this, but he didn't comment.
"Okay." He nodded.
Layla turned to Theo, raising her eyebrows.
"Well?"
Theo smiled. "I just wanted to to give you a ride home."
Layla laughed at his nervousness. "Are you serious?"
"I am."
"Okay then. Let's go." She smiled.
They walked hand in hand towards Theo's car. They talked and laughed the whole way towards Layla's house. When they arrived at her house. He opened the car door for her and walked her to the steps of her house.
"And they say chivalry is dead." Layla laughed.
"I try to be a gentleman." Theo replied. "Shouldn't I get a thank you?" He smirked.
"Wow." Layla said sarcastically, "I'm beginning to feel a sense of de ja vu."
"Is that so?" He said as he leaned forward.
"Definitely." Layla whispered as she closed the gap between them.
Theo's arms found themselves wrapped around Layla's waist, while hers wrapped themselves around Theo's neck.
You know that saying about how when you kiss you feel fireworks?
Layla didn't feel fireworks.
She felt something much more powerful and intense.
Layla felt Theo smile into the kiss. They broke the kiss and gazed at each other.
"How was that for a thank you?" Layla asked.
"Perfect." Theo replied still smiling.
"Goodnight Theo." she said.
"It is now." Theo retorted.
Layla laughed and kissed him on the cheek. "Goodnight Layla." Theo said as she walked up the steps.
Throwing him a smile, Layla opened her front door and walked inside.
-
Layla cringed as she heard screaming coming from a nearby hospital room. Melissa explained how the morphine wasn't working. Scott and Layla looked at each other and nodded.
"Let's see if we can help." Scott said as they walked into the room.
They stood either ends of the boys bed and Layla was shocked at how much pain he was in. His face was glistening with sweat as he screamed.
"Please make it stop." He begged through clenched teeth.
Layla and Scott each took one of his hands. The pain was absolutely excruciating. It was like nothing Layla had ever felt before.
"Layla, Scott!" Melissa and Kira yelled, pulling them away.
"I'm okay." Scott breathed.
"Layla?"
"Fine, just give me a minute."
"Can I see his arm?" Scott asked.
Melissa walked forward and pulled the bandage away from the wound.
"What is that?" Layla asked disgusted upon seeing the wound.
Part of the boys arm was black, almost as if his flesh was disintegrating.
"The lab says scorpion venom." Melissa told them.
Wrapping the bandage back onto the boys arm, Melissa explained how the boy should have been dead ten hours ago and that the scorpion should have been ten feet tall.
"Lucas." The boy gasped. "It was Lucas."
"Who the hell is Lucas?"
Corey began to explain what happened. He said that he and Lucas were kissing when he felt a sharp pain in his arm. Apparently Lucas apologised and told Corey he would see him at the club.
"What club?"
"Every Friday night. The Sinema."
"Shit." Layla swore feeling panicked. " That's where Liam went." She said and ran off.
"Layla." Scott shouted after her, but she wasn't listening.
-
Layla pushed through the crowd of people, following Liam's scent. It was masked by the stench of alcohol and sweat and she eventually lost it. She closed her eyes, listening. She tuned out the music and focused. Layla heard growling followed by several 'smashes' and 'bangs'.
She followed the sound and eventually it led her to where she needed to be.
Lucas and Brett were engaged in hand to hand combat. Layla shook her head and growled, her teeth lengthening and her eyes turning yellow. Her nails morphed into claws and she charged at Lucas.
But she was too late. Lucas dragged his arm across Brett's stomach, leaving a large gash. Reaching Lucas she shoved him to the side. He turned his attention to her and began to attack her. He may have been turned supernatural but he hadn't been trained as much as Layla had. She dodged and deflected each kick, swipe and hit that he threw at her.
Things were going well, but Layla was beginning to tire. Her hits became more sloppy, her movements slower. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Liam, Scott and Kira enter.
"You're a little late." Layla snarled.
Scott and Liam charged at Lucas. Kira whipped out her katana and slashed at him. Together, the group began to take him down. Liam came at Lucas from his left, throwing him backwards. The boy fell, his black eyes slowly fading to normal.
Liam stood over him. Layla stood staring at Lucas, taking deep breaths.
Suddenly Kira began to glow. A golden aura surrounded her, resembling the shape of a fox. She ran at Lucas, her katana raised. She went to bring her lethal weapon down on the boy when Scott stepped in.
"Kira." He shouted, grilled ahold of her katana that was in mid swing.
Slowly the golden light faded and Kira stepped back.
"Is everyone okay?" Scott asked.
Upon seeing everyone was still alive and breathing, Scott asked Liam to help move Lucas. As they lifted him an arrow of sorts lodged itself in his abdomen, killing the teenage boy.
The looked up and saw three people in masks.
Just like Malia had said.
"Why did you do that?" Scott roared.
"His condition was terminal." The masked man said, his voice robotic.
"What does that mean?" Layla asked, infuriated.
"He failed."
One minute they were there, the next they were gone.
