Chapter 3
Layla sighed and slammed her Science books onto the table. She sat down beside Lydia and pouted.
"I hate this class." She groaned.
It had not been a good morning for Layla. She had to physically drag her brother out of their fathers office. Stiles had refused to go to school until their father did a complete background check on Theo.
This resulted in a lot of swearing and growling from Layla who was fed up with her brother and a "that's definitely my daughter" from the sheriff.
"Well," Lydia spoke as she doodled on her book. "If you look behind you, your opinion may just change."
Layla's eyebrows furrowed in confusion but she turned round and locked eyes with Theo. He waved at her and smiled, which Layla sheepishly returned. Turning back she glared at the strawberry blonde.
"You knew he was looking, didn't you?" She whisper yelled, worried that Theo would hear.
Lydia smirked. "I did. He's been staring at you, since you walked in."
Layla went to reply when Scott walked in and sat beside Kira. The three girls looked at each other and then Scott.
"Are you in the right class?" Kira asked.
Scott looked up at her. "AP Biology."
"Do you know what AP stands for?" Lydia asked. Scott looked at her and smiled. "Advanced Placement." He laughed.
The teacher walked in and began speaking about some formulas or something. Layla tuned out. She was tired and agitated. Besides, her grades were as good as Lydia's so she could afford to space out for one class.
"Who else here thinks they're in the right class?" She asked pulling Layla out of her trance.
Layla snorted. She looked round and saw Theo had his hand up. He smirked at Layla when their eyes locked. Layla pursed her lips and raised her hand, not breaking eye contact with Theo.

Layla sat beside Scott, her head on his shoulder. "Did you sleep at all last night Layla?" He asked.
"Nope." She grumbled.
"Why?"
"Stiles wouldn't shut the hell up. Theo this and Theo that. I had to barricade myself in my bedroom. And even then, he sat and listed all his shady qualities."
Scott laughed. "Don't look now, but here he comes."
"Come on." Stiles said, tapping his sister's shoulder.
"We have a free period." Scott answered for them.
"Yeah. So do I. And so does Theo Raeken." Stiles replied.
"Sweet lord. I can't get one moments peace. Stiles one of these days. One of these days." Layla grumbled, as Scott helped her up.
"What?" Stiles asked, confused.
Layla sighed and shook her head. "Let's go."
----
"I was skating in the neighbours empty pool." Theo began.
Stiles had dragged Scott and Layla into the boys locker room. Luckily nobody else was in the locker room, otherwise it would have been slightly awkward for Layla.
"Nobody was home. I'm not too good of a skater but I guess I was feeling pretty determined because I completely lost track of time. I didn't even realise it was night until the yard lights came on. I said I wasn't too good, and on my last try I came down, hard. Sitting there at the bottom of the pool, I realised something. I never heard the board come back down. It came at me fast, I barely had a chance to run away before it bit me, right here." Theo said, pointing to just above his right hip.
"Well, it wasn't an accident. He wanted to turn you." Scott said.
"Yeah well then, why aren't you a part of his pack l?" Stiles asked. He was leaning up against the lockers, his arms crossed.
As much as Layla hated to admit it, it was a good question. If he was turned on purpose, where was his alpha?
"Because by the time it came to my first full moon. He was dead."
"How do you know that?" Layla asked, tilting her head to the side. She was standing beside Theo.
"I met another one of his pack a couple of weeks later. He told me the alpha had been killed by two of his own betas. Twins."
Layla whimpered and the three boys heard it. Both Scott and Stiles gave her a sad, sympathetic expression, but Theo just had a look of confusion. Layla was very close to the twins. She had been warned to stay away from them, but she didn't want to. They were always nice to her. Layla remembered how Stiles refused to talk to her for two weeks after she arrived to school on the back of Aidan's motorcycle. But the twins were like extended family to Layla.
When she lost Aidan she felt like a piece of her was torn apart. She sat on the ground with Aidan's head in her lap as she and Ethan watched life slip away from him. Ethan held his brothers hand, and they both spoke comforting words to Aidan. Layla and Ethan were each other's rock after Aidan died, until he too left. He still kept in touch with Layla. Sending her postcards from all the exotic places he visited, and ringing her at least once a month. They both needed each other, no matter how far apart they were.
"Scott listen to my pulse, I'm telling the truth." Theo said.
"Right." Stiles replied, pushing off the lockers. "Or you just know how to steady your own heartbeat while you're lying your ass off."
"Stiles." Layla snapped.
"Why would I lie?" Theo asked, shaking his head.
"Cause maybe you're not who you say you are." Stiles piped in.
Layla closed her eyes and sighed. "Stiles." She growled. "Not this again."
"Okay..." Theo replied, his eyebrows raised. He then turned to Scott.
"Look, in fourth grade you had an inhaler. I had one too." Theo said. " I remember this day when I had an asthma attack. A bad one. I was waiting in the nurses office to be taken to the ER."
Layla closed her eyes and zoned out. She remembered that day. She was absolutely terrified. Her and Theo were together when it happened. Layla searched for his inhaler, only to find that he wasn't with him. Together, they managed to reach the nurses office. She sat with Theo the entire time, holding his hand. She refused to leave his side until she knew he was okay.
"I've been on my own this whole time." Theo said. Layla's facial expression turned into one of sadness, and she slipped her hand into Theo's. He smiled at her and squeezed her hand. They both missed the glare that Stiles was sending their way.
"Everyone knows that lone wolves. They don't make it on their own. I swear I'm that same kid from fourth grade. I was hoping you were too." The bell rang, ending their conversation.
"I'd better go. I don't want to be late for class. You guys aren't the only ones I need to impress." Theo said smiling. Scott returned the smile, whiles Stiles just rolled his eyes. Bending down slightly, Theo placed a kiss on Layla's cheek.
"I'll see you later." She said to her smiling. Layla nodded and smiled back at him.
"Don't give me that look." Stiles said to Scott.
"You have to give people the benefit of the doubt sometimes." Scott replied.
"Not this time." Stiles retorted. "I know I'm right. There's something off about him. I can feel it."
"Lydia's the psychic. Not you." Scott laughed as he and Layla began to leave.
"Lydia's not a psychic, she's a banshee. There's a difference." Stiles shouted. "Oi, Layla where are you going? I want to talk to you. What was all that with Theo?" Stiles shouted. But Layla wasn't listening. Rolling her eyes, she said goodbye to Scott and set off for her next class.
