Chapter 11

Layla swallowed the bile in her throat as she stared at the dead body on the table before her. Yet another teenager dead, yet another teenager who had become a victim.

"Did you know him?" Theo asked, looking at Scott.

"His name's Josh." Scott replied.

"He was a junior." Layla added sadly. Theo intertwined his hand with hers and she smiled gratefully at him.

Layla noticed Theo and Stiles look at each other, as if they knew something that she and Scott didn't. She brushed it off and watched Stiles cover up the body.

"Which one did it? Was it the one with the cane?" Scott asked.

"Yeah." Theo replied.

"What are we going to do with him?" Layla asked, chewing her lip nervously.

"We can't just set the alarm and leave, that's how Tracy disappeared." Stiles piped in. "Someone's gotta stay here with him."

Theo sighed. "I'll do it. It's not like I had a big Saturday night planned."

"I'll stay with you." Layla said.

"No." Stiles snapped roughly. "We'll need you if anything happens." He added his voice softer.

Layla's eyebrows furrowed. What was Stiles problem with Theo? He hadn't done anything. Scott's phone buzzed, drawing Layla's attention.

"What is it?" She inquired, looking at him.

"Another one." He replied. "Another Chimera."

"You have got to be kidding me." Layla groaned.

---

Layla now stood outside Hayden's bedroom with Scott, Liam and Stiles. This was ridiculous. All she wanted to do was lie on the couch and catch up on Supernatural. But no, because here she was living her own real life version of it, only without the really hot brothers and adorable angel.

"Hayden, it's Scott." Scott shouted, banging on her door. "I know that you're scared but we just want to help."

Hayden ignored Scott. "I can hear her heartbeat. She's really freaked out." Layla commented.

"What happened?" Scott asked, turning to face Liam.

"She was okay when we got here. I left to text you for two seconds and she locked herself in there." Liam replied, looking worried.

"Why?" Stiles asked.

"I don't know."

"She's definitely a chimera." Scott told Liam.

"She said she heard a voice." Liam elaborated.

Layla's eyes narrowed as she listened more attentively. Hearing voices was never a good sign. She should know.

"She said she heard a voice saying 'your condition improves."' Liam said.

Layla felt sick. It was bad enough it was happening to her. But the doctors targeting Hayden, that was something that didn't sit very well with Layla. She ran forward and banged on Hayden's door.

"Hayden please open your door, I can help you." She pleaded.

Well she could try anyway.

"You're sister works with my dad down at the station." She continued.

"Layla let me try." Scott said softly.

"No." Layla growled at him and Scott flinched, staring at her.

"Hayden please, we need to tell you the truth. We need to talk to you. I need to talk to you." She said softly.

Silence.

"Okay, Hayden sweetheart, this is how it's gonna go. One; you open the door and we can tell you everything. Two; I kick this door down and tie you down while you listen. Or three; we leave and let the doctors - you know those creepy robotic things with the masks?- get you."

Layla didn't know why she had suddenly become so ... ferocious.

But it worked.

The door opened and there stood Hayden, claws out, fangs visible and her eyes were glowing a bright yellow.

"I believe you." She said.

---

"You want to hide her in the high school?" Layla asked arching her eyebrows.

Scott nodded. "For how long?" Stiles asked.

"As long as it takes. All night even."

"So how exactly it this going to work?" Layla sighed.

Scott launched into his very detailed and elaborate plan. Layla nodded as he spoke and listened carefully. When he finished he looked at the two.

"It might actually work." Layla said.

"And if it works, what happens?" Stiles asked.

"We catch one of them."

That didn't sound so good.

---

Theo looked at the dread doctor that stood in front of him.

"Did you forget that you're supposed to be keeping me in the loop?" He snarled. "And Layla, are you doing something to her? She has immunity of this, of all of it. And if I find out that you've been meddling with her, I will destroy you."

He looked at the body on the table before turning back to where the doctor had been standing. He let out an aggravated sigh.

---

Stiles sat in the car with Theo.

"No, I want to spend some quality time with you." Stiles said sarcastically.

"Sounds good to me." Theo retorted.

"And one more thing. Stay the hell away from my sister." Stiles snarled, feeling very protective over his twin.

Theo smirked. "Not a chance."

---

"Okay let's do this. Operation save Hayden's life." Layla whooped as she walked into the room on Parrish's shoulder. "There's no better way to bond, than to have a stake out. Don't you agree Jordan?" She asked, levelling her face with his.

Parrish laughed. "I'm just glad I brought my gun."

"Oh so am I. You've got some pretty nice guns." She winked as he set her down on the bench.

Parrish rolled his eyes, but Layla saw the faint blush in his cheeks. She laughed softly.

They began to get everything ready, placing radio transmitters around the school and barricading certain doors. Parrish went out to his jeep and soon things were set up.

"Is it me, or is Liam not aware of the second part of the plan?" Lydia asked Scott and Layla, keeping her voice low.

"Yeah, I'm still not sure if there's going to be a second part." Scott replied.

"Or if it's going to work." Lydia added.

"Or if we're all going to live." Layla muttered.

---

"Would you believe me," Theo said as he and Stiles sat in the jeep. "If I told you all I want, all I've ever wanted was for you guys to trust me?"

"Nope." Stiles snorted.

"Well, would you believe me if I told you that I loved Layla?"

"Definitely not. And don't bring my sister and your lies into this." He said, his voice rough.

"It's not a lie." Theo retorted.

"You and I both know it is. My sister is way too good for you. And I don't know what sort of sick, twisted sort of game that you're planning, but don't you dare get my sister sucked into it. I don't trust you, and if Layla had any sense, she wouldn't either."

"So you're here because you're never going to trust me?" Theo asked, arching his eyebrows.

"Yep. Glad we had this talk." Stiles replied, his tone sarcastic again.

"You know who you remind me of?"

"Theo I really don't care." Stiles sighed.

"My sister. She was smarter than everyone too. And a pain in the ass like you. She always looked out for me, the same way that you look out for Layla. The same way that you look out for Scott. You know I was the one that found her body. She had fallen into a creek, broken her leg. I told her she would've been okay if it wasn't one of the coldest nights of the year.

"If it wasn't for the hypothermia. When I found her, all I could think was, I should've known. That I should've looked out for her. I would talk to anyone after. Only Layla. She cradled me like a child while I sobbed. She stroked my hair until I calmed down. I was crying so much, I almost had an asthma attack. But Layla was there. She was there for me."

"Why are you telling me this?" Stiles asked.

"I'm telling you this because even if you don't trust me and even if you don't like me, I'm still going to be looking out for you. And I'm still going to be looking out for Layla. Because I'm not lying Stiles, I do love your sister and I will protect her."
