Chapter 10

"I'm fine."

That was a phrase that Layla was tired of repeating. She didn't know why people kept asking her if she was okay. If she was feeling fine. If she needed to sit down. She kept wondering why people were asking her those questions.

But the thing was, if somebody had of asked her the question right that second, she would say no.

Things were fine at first. She was sitting in English when her vision began to blur. She stood up, intending to ask her teacher if she could go to the bathroom, but the words never left her mouth.

She slumped to the ground, convulsing and twitching.

She was having a seizure.

Before Peter bit her, she suffered badly from epilepsy. For Layla that was the best part about becoming a werewolf. Not that she had superhuman strength or glowing eyes. It was that the seizures stopped.

Yet here she was having one.

--

"Ring a ring a Rosie." Ten year old Layla sang to herself as she read the book in her hands.

Present day Layla watched her younger self as she continued to sing the nursery rhyme. Her natural brown hair was in loose curls and she wore a pale blue sundress with a white silk ribbon around her waist.

"We all fall down."

Little Layla put her book beside her and smiled.

"LAYLA!" A voice screamed.

Both Layla's swung their head in the direction of where the scream was coming from. Little Layla began to walk to the door, following the sound of the voice.

"NO!" Present day Layla screamed at her younger self, realising what was happening. What had happened.

"Don't go in there!" She begged, following her younger self.

Little Layla placed her hand on the doorknob.

"Don't." Layla cried.

Little Layla turned and looked straight at present day Layla.

"You have nice hair." She giggled, as her older self kneeled next to her. She reached up and twirled a lock of Layla's blue hair in her hand.

"Mummy's favourite colour is blue." She said softly.

"I know." Present day Layla replied, her voice breaking. "Please don't go in there. Why don't we just go and I'll read to you?" She said, attempted to persuade her younger self.

Little Layla shook her head. "It's okay. Mummy just needs my help, silly." She laughed.

She opened the fire escape door and now stood on the roof of the hospital. Present day Layla followed her, knowing exactly what was going to happen.

"Mummy, are you okay?" Little Layla asked.

"Layla help me. You have to help me." Her mother begged.

Present day Layla watched as her dad ran past her, towards her mom.

"Claudia, what are you doing up here?" He asked, cautiously.

"Mummy are you okay?" Little Layla repeated.

Layla's father turned round and looked at her. "Layla, you were supposed to go home."

"Mummy said I could stay. I was reading to her until the doctor made me leave. So I hid. I heard mummy calling. Mummy?" Little Layla explained and turned her attention to her mother.

"They're after you love." Her mother said softly.

"Who mummy?"

"The doctors. The doctors are after you Layla. Don't let them get you. My beautiful, baby girl. Don't let them get you."

Layla's father looked between his wife and his ten year old daughter.

"But the doctors are here to help. They help people. Don't they daddy?" Layla asked looking at her father.

Her father nodded. "They're trying to help you Claudia."

"No!" Her mother shouted. "They want her! He's trying to hurt me and Layla. They're trying to take our baby girl. Listen to me!" Her mother cried.

Her father took ahold of Claudia's hand. "No. That's not true." He said softly.

Claudia stepped down and fell into her husbands arms.

"You have to remember it's a disease. The dementia makes you have delusions. It makes you think that people are out to get you." Layla's father said softly.

"You don't see the way he looks at me. You don't see the way he looks at Layla." She cried.

Claudia turned round and looked at younger Layla. The look in her eyes still haunted Layla to this day. Her eyes were filled with pain and worry and warning.

"Don't let them get you Layla!"

Little Layla smiled. "I won't mummy." She replied, not understanding the real meaning behind her mothers words.

"Claudia, he's ten years old!" Her father said.

"He's trying to kill me!"  Claudia cried looking behind both Layla's.

Both Layla's turned and saw a ten year old Stiles standing there.

"Hello Stiles." Little Layla smiled but her brother just stared at their mother.

"Stop looking at me like that. STOP!" Their mother cried.

She ran at Stiles, shoving Layla to the side. Little Layla fell backwards whacking her head off the concrete steps. Layla watched as her mother clawed at her brother.

"Mummy." Both Layla's echoed.

Layla's vision began to blur. She slumped to the ground and with a sense of déjà vu she began to have yet another seizure.

"Layla." A voice called, but it didn't sound like either of her parents or Stiles.

-

"Layla!"

Layla blinked and found herself lying on a stretcher.

"Layla are you okay?" A doctor asked, but she barley acknowledged it.

"Where am I?" She asked.

"You're in an ambulance. We're bringing you to the hospital. You've suffered a major seizure. I'm Adam." He said to her.

Moments later Layla arrived at the hospital and was brought in on the stretcher despite her objections. They brought her into a room and Layla spaced out.

"I'll just be a minute." The doctor said, snapping her back into focus.

"Can I go home?"

The doctor shook his head. " I'm afraid we're going to have to keep you in for overnight observation." He answered and left the room.

"Screw this." Layla grumbled, getting up.

Thankfully she wasn't stuck in one of those hospital gowns, so she just slipped out of the room, looking for Melissa. The floors became more barren as Layla walked them. Eventually she reached the elevator and hit the button that would bring her to the floor where Melissa was based.

The elevator doors opened and Layla was shocked at the sight. Melissa and Scott was running towards her while Malia was in combat with one of the doctors. Melissa injected Scott with something and just as Layla went to wolf out Melissa screamed, "RUN!"

Layla finally wolfed out and ran to help Malia. She grabbed ahold of her arm and pushed her behind her.

"Go." She growled. Malia went to argue but Layla growled once more and clawed at the doctor.

Malia ran towards the elevator while the doctor stared at Layla, not making any attempt to hurt her.

"You are evolving." It's mechanical voice spoke. "You're getting stronger, but do not tire yourself out. Go."

Layla looked blankly at the doctor, before snapping back to the current situation. She turned and ran towards the elevator and stepped inside as Melissa hit the button.

"We should not have read that book." Scott breathed.

But that wasn't what Layla was thinking about. She was thinking about something else entirely.

For one, she was wondering why the doctor didn't attack her. What had they meant by evolving?

And then there was the flashback she had.

When her mother said not to let the doctors get her, did she mean the dread doctors?

Did she know?
