Chapter 104 | Ennervate
Hi, this is part two of the double update. Please make sure you have read Chapter 103 "Battle at the Potters" before reading this one. Thank you!
For a moment, there was silence. And then, a scream.
A scream that was so bloodcurdling that many of the duels stopped to stare in shock as the noise was ripped from Euphemia's mouth. A scream that she didn't even know she was capable of making as she dropped to her knees, sobs shaking her entire body as she quickly crawled over to where Olivia was lying.
You could most definitely blame it on Mia's head injury that her mind was spinning furiously but she knew for a fact it was just because she was on the verge of a panic attack as the tears began to spill out of her eyes. Euphemia was shaking her head over and over again because Olivia Potter couldn't be dead, all of her senses had to be lying to her....
But there was no lie. This was not a nightmare that she could just wake up from - no matter how many times Mia pinched herself, willing to wake up in bed gasping, nothing happened and Liv was still on the ground, completely and utterly motionless. And there was nothing she could do about it, there was nothing she could do to save the eight year old who had become like a little sister to her.
Olivia Potter was lying down in the same way that one would go to sleep, her hand gently pressed across her chest in a very queenly fashion that definitely matched all of her jokes about being superior to everyone. The most heartbreaking thing about it all was that her chest was not moving with any steady beats whatsoever.
Her blue eyes, eyes that were once full of life, amusement and sassiness stared blankly up at the ceiling and Euphemia felt a choked sob escape from her as she shakily reached out a hand and closed Liv's eyes, not wanting to see the life that had been sucked out of them. The life that had had so much potential - for Merlin's sake, the girl had been eight.
Despite only being eight, Olivia had been so hilarious and ever so brave in her last moments, she had been so bold and she had pushed Mia out of the way of the killing curse, instead dying herself all because she wanted to prove that she was a big, brave girl like the rest of her family.
Euphemia felt disorientated as the sobs racked through her, "Ennervate!" she cried out, her wand shaking as she tried to revive Charlus' sister, "Ennervate! Ennervate! Ennervate!" she was practically hysterical as she kept trying to wake Olivia up. But absolutely nothing was working, there was nothing that could bring her back and that made her cry even harder as it slowly sunk in that little Liv was gone. Forever.
She was tiny in death.
"Mia, what's wrong?" came the concerned shout of Everleigh as Euphemia turned around, tears still staining her face as she sobbed uncontrollably. It only took a moment for Everleigh to detach herself from who she was fighting, quickly pushing them out of the way and the Knights of Walpurgis almost seemed to part for her - so many of them had stopped fighting to look over to where Mia was continuously sobbing 'Ennervate!' over the youngest Potter daughter's body.
Unaware of how many of the dark wizards were now disapparating out of fear of what Heather had done (they were only meant to kill Henry, Tom Riddle had specifically told them not to harm anyone else), Everleigh rushed over, concerned for her surrogate daughter, wiping away Euphemia's tears carefully with her hand.
"Don't cry, it'll all be over soon," the woman said quietly to Mia who shook her bleeding head furiously, motioning to the lifeless Olivia behind her, who she was shielding from further harm. It took a single moment for Everleigh to actually notice her youngest daughter and her mouth fell open for a second as her eyes widened, her figure freezing completely.
"No," Everleigh whispered, the sound hardly heard over the loud noises of the battle that was still going on behind them as the remaining Knights of Walpurgis evidently still wanted to complete their mission of killing Henry Potter, who had backed into the kitchen with Charlus as they fought several dark wizards.
"No, no, no, no, NOOOO," the guttural sound that exploded from Everleigh was like one of a wounded animal and she screamed to bloody murder as she stared in complete and utter disbelief at her lifeless child on the ground whilst Mia placed a hand over her own mouth, trying to choke back her own tears that were still streaming hotly down her face.
Everleigh fell to her knees as if she had been struck in the stomach and she bent over Olivia, trying to revive her with some desperate cries in the same way that Euphemia had done - "Ennervate! ENNERVATE!" - but Olivia showed no signs of waking up and that only made Everleigh cry even harder as the realisation sunk in that her daughter was gone, lying over Olivia's body as if that would protect it from further harm.
A strained sob from behind her made Mia turn around and she instantly felt the anger rise within her as she saw Heather crying, looking completely in shock, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hit her, I'm so sorry," the blonde was apologising profusely but all Euphemia could see was red as she lunged forward, shoving Heather over as she wrestled the girl to the floor.
"She was eight, you fucking monster! EIGHT!" Mia screamed, the words streaming from her mouth not even registering in her brain as she just wanted to hurt Heather, she wanted to make her pay for killing Olivia. Forgetting her wand in her unadulterated rage, Euphemia drew her fist back and plunged it into Heather's face again and again, punching and whacking every inch of her body that she could reach.
Mia just couldn't believe that Charlus' baby sister was gone, that the sassy and sweet little girl had had her life ripped away from her simply because she was trying to prove that she was a big girl and that she could be trusted to be a grown up. Simply just because the Knights of Walpurgis had wanted to seek revenge on Henry and, in doing so, they had murdered his little girl.
Henry's little girl who would never experience what it was like to be an adult and that depressing thought made hot tears spill down Euphemia's cheeks again, uncontrollable sobs racking through her body as Heather screamed in pain underneath her. But Mia didn't care that the blonde was hurt because of her because all she could remember was Everleigh's animatic howl of grief when she realised Olivia was dead.
Nothing could compare on the scale of pain to losing your child. Absolutely nothing.
The grief must've distracted her too much though for, through Euphemia's blurry eyes as she punched Heather over and over again, she didn't see the woman approaching them as she stared hopelessly at her daughter, trying to catch her attention. A brush of the shoulder against Mia notified her of the woman's presence and she glanced sideways to see her mother approaching Everleigh slowly.
By the looks of things, Cassiopeia Black had seen her opportunity to seek revenge on Everleigh after all of these years because Euphemia knew for a fact that her mother wasn't sneaking up on Everleigh to comfort her about Olivia. That's not how Cassiopeia worked. She only cared if it affected her, she didn't care about anyone else's feelings, especially not those of her longtime enemy.
Mia still wasn't quite sure what Cassiopeia was doing but she rose quickly, stumbling over to try and stand in front of her mother's now raised wand but Cassiopeia shoved her out of the way, "Leave, Euphemia," she hissed before shooting a curse in the direction of Everleigh, ignoring the shriek that erupted from her daughter in response to Everleigh being struck from behind where she had been knelt over the motionless Olivia.
The blue spell hit her right in the back and, as Mis raced around to reach Everleigh's side, she could've sworn that she saw a look of relief flash across her face as she fell, her body aligning so that it was about to topple on top of Olivia's pale and still body, the body that Euphemia still couldn't look at without feeling physically sick.
Mia quickly jumped forward and grabbed Everleigh so that she fell with a thump next to Olivia, instead of on top of her, as she looked in horror at the cuts that had sprung all over Everleigh's body, oozing enormous amounts of blood. "You bitch!" she spat at Cassiopeia but she didn't let the rest of the anger fester within her, more focused on trying to save Everleigh.
Everleigh was gasping in pain as her body practically seeped litres of blood, the liquid falling onto the carpet to make a dark crimson stain. "Stay still, I'll heal you," Euphemia muttered reassuringly to the woman who had become like a mother to her, trying not to panic or cry as she knew that that would only alarm Everleigh further.
Mia was aware of Cassiopeia watching them, the woman feeling satisfied that she had finally gotten her revenge but feeling crestfallen at the fact that her own daughter was looking at Everleigh with the kind of love that she had never once looked at Cassiopeia with. Tears were running down Euphemia's face as her shaky hand tried to cover Everleigh's bloody wounds, the crimson colour staining her skin.
"Keep yourself together, girl," Everleigh rasped and Mia let out a tearful chuckle as she raised her shaking arm to perform a healing charm. However, once she had uttered it, nothing happened and the blood continued to pour out of Everleigh from all over her body, causing Euphemia to panic even more.
The cuts were everywhere and the woman flopped in Mia's arms, going paler and paler as more and more blood dropped onto the once immaculate carpet below the two. "Why isn't it working?!" Euphemia shrieked in a frenzy, her hands infinitely stained with Mrs Potter's blood now as she frantically tried to heal the woman over and over again, Cassiopeia watching on like a hawk.
Everleigh's eyes were slowly closing and Mia found herself gabbling onto her, urging her to keep her eyes open as she racked her brain for every spell she could think of. "Help me!" she screamed at Cassiopeia but her mother only stared blankly back at her, her face devoid of all and any emotion whatsoever.
For Cassiopeia, this was the moment she had been waiting for for years, ever since Everleigh had stolen Henry away from her and ruined their relationship. But this went a little further than a high school feud - one of the reasons that Cassiopeia wasn't rushing to help to fix the damage her curse had caused was because of the pure jealousy rushing through her body at how much Mia loved Everleigh.
That was another thing she had stolen from Cassiopeia. Euphemia.
"Stop, Mia," Everleigh said gently but weakly, after Euphemia tried every single healing charm she could physically remember to try and save the life of her mother figure, the woman who had been more motherly in the past few months that Mia had had the pleasure of knowing her than Cassiopeia Black had ever been in Euphemia's entire lifetime.
"No, I can't lose you! Charlus needs you! Henry needs you! Rochelle needs you! I need you!" Mia told her frantically as the tears gushed out of her eyes like a waterfall before she attempted to stop them flowing, hiccuping as she made eye contact with her mother. Words that Cassiopeia had said in the past about crying flooded into her mind, "I'm sorry, I know crying is a weakness that needs to be punished but-"
Everleigh weakly raised a bloody hand that had been resting on her chest to try and suppress the bleeding herself and wiped Euphemia's tears away gently with a soft smile on her pale face. She knew that Cassiopeia would know the counter curse, she knew that the woman had cursed her out of spite and resentment for the past that they had shared but Everleigh didn't want to spend her possible last moments dwelling on that, she wanted to comfort the girl who she thought of as a daughter.
"What did I always tell you? People don't cry because they are weak, they cry because they have been strong for too long. You are not weak, Mia, you are the strongest person I know....be strong for me, darling....be strong for my baby boy...." she was running out of breath as Mia desperately tightened her robes around Everleigh to stop the constant flow of blood.
"I will do," she promised through her tears as Euphemia blinked them away, not wanting to take her hands away from Everleigh, as that was the only thing that was keeping her alive right now. "You....need....to....be.....strong," the woman gasped out and reached with her own blood covered hands to hold Euphemia's, clasping them in her weak grip and Mia clutched at her hands tightly, making Everleigh smile tiredly.
"Keep talking," she encouraged Everleigh, her tears choking her speech but she had to be strong for Everleigh and so held her head up high and blinked away her tears. Euphemia was aware of Cassiopeia still staring at the scene of the two of them but she vowed to herself that she would deal with her mother later, she was more focused on the woman who had actually been a mother to her right now.
The actions of Cassiopeia compared to Everleigh just showed Mia that blood meant you were related.....it didn't mean that you were family. The people in your life who want you in theirs, who accept you for who you are, who would do anything to see you smile - that was the true meaning of family.
"I'm trying.....I'm just so....tired. I just want a lie in for once in my life. No more noisy children.....no more children at all," Everleigh choked up then and her eyes flickered to Olivia's lifeless form mere metres away from them. She removed one of her hands from Mia's to hold her youngest daughter's, holding the pale, small fingers in her grip as her other hand rested on Euphemia's.
"Yes, sleep is good. But please try and stay awake," Mia chuckled sadly as she comforted the woman, classing it as a miracle that they hadn't been hit with any other spell yet, but she was oblivious to her surroundings - her only focus was the dying Everleigh in her arms.
If Euphemia had looked around, however, she would've seen that the rest of the living room was deserted as many of the Knights of Walpurgis had now fled. Heather was still crying in the corner next to another masked Knight and Cassiopeia was stood watching Everleigh slowly slip into unconsciousness in Mia's arms, bleeding out onto the carpet as Olivia's body lay next to them.
Henry, Charlus and Rochelle were nowhere to be seen.
"Are you coming, Cassie? Riddle has called us all back to the manor, he says the work here is done," the masked woman who had been consoling Heather spoke to Cassiopeia, who nodded absentmindedly, her eyes still fixed on Euphemia and Everleigh. "He'll probably be angry about that, you know," the woman pointed out, taking off her mask to reveal that she was in fact Irma Black, Walburga's mum.
"About what?" Cassiopeia asked her sister in alarm, finally tearing her gaze away from her daughter who was cradling her mortal enemy. "About those two ending up dead," Irma nodded towards Everleigh and Olivia, "He said for us to only fatally hurt Henry because otherwise there would be an uproar. But if the wife ends up dead as well as the kid.....well, Riddle won't be very impressed. So, if you can fix it, I would, if I was you. Don't let your petty feud get in the way of this mission."
Irma left then, sweeping away with a shaking Heather in her arms who was still crying over accidentally killing Olivia as Cassiopeia stood in shock. She had wanted to hurt Everleigh so badly that she had forgotten about what Riddle had commanded and, as a result of the alarm that rushed through her body, she quickly uttered the counter curse underneath her breath, watching as stitches began to form over Everleigh's body as both her and Mia remained unaware of this fact.
Euphemia was indeed oblivious of what her mother had just done so she kept scrambling to try and stop the flow of blood from Everleigh's body as, even though the counter curse was slowly healing the woman, she had still lost a lot of blood and was still in danger of dying. "It hurts so damn much," Everleigh grumbled, her breathing slowly getting back to normal.
"Wait....you've stopped bleeding as much. Did one of my healing spells work?" Mia wondered out loud, feeling her tears beginning to dissipate when she realised that Everleigh was actually slowly being healed. She didn't know what sort of miracle had just occurred but she felt a bright smile light up her face, "Everleigh, you're gonna be okay!" she exclaimed happily.
The minute that Cassiopeia saw that smile on her daughter's face, she turned on her heel and dissaparated from the cottage, being the last Knight of Walpurgis to flee, leaving Euphemia and Everleigh alone in the destroyed living room. "I'm going to be okay?" Everleigh breathed out, looking partly relieved but also partly disappointed, "What an anti climax," she said sarcastically.
Mia managed a watery chuckle as she wiped at her eyes furiously, watching in awe as Everleigh's wounds just magically sewed themselves back up again as a result of Cassiopeia's counter curse, not that Euphemia was aware of that factor, though. "What a relief, eh?" she asked Everleigh, trying to lighten the mood but the woman's gaze had already fallen on Olivia as she managed to sit up a little, pale from the loss of blood.
"I wish it had been her who was magically healed," Everleigh said bitterly, her voice breaking at the end of her sentence as she reached out a shaky, bloodied hand to stroke Olivia's soft blonde hair, "My little girl," she broke down into sobs again and Mia found herself pulling her mother figure into another hug.
"She's peaceful now. And she'll still come and visit you, in your dreams," Euphemia whispered comfortingly in Everleigh's ear, rubbing her back as the woman closed her eyes, the weariness of the battle and the loss of blood taking it's toll on her. "Then let me sleep now so that I can see her," Everleigh mumbled underneath her breath.
"It's okay, have a little rest. You've lost a lot of blood, we need to get you to St. Mungos. But hang in on there, alright? You can't leave us now," Mia told her sternly and Everleigh gave a little nod, curling up against Olivia's limp body as she stroked her youngest daughter's hair, like that was the only thing that brought her comfort.
"At least I'll be able to see Olivia again...." Everleigh breathed in such a soft tone that it was almost hard to hear despite the deafening silence in the living room. She took a deep breath, her eyes fluttering closed as she passed away into deep, peaceful slumber right there next to Euphemia who sat there with her arms wrapped around her knees, dried blood, sweat and tears shining on her face.
Though she didn't want to admit it, Mia knew it was very unlikely that, when Everleigh Potter woke again, she would not be the same woman as before. How could she be when she had just lost one of the most precious people in her life at such a young age?
Please don't kill me. I'm sorry.
