Chapter 29

Itachi tsked at himself when he had finally gotten himself together it was too late. He had missed his opportunity to convince Naruto that they could make the relationship work. Naruto had already packed the little things he owned from the house and left, Naruto's set of house keys sitting innocently on the dining table with a thank you note. Itachi knocked his knuckles on the table loudly, he wanted to throw his things and kick his furniture but that sort of destructive behaviour was going to solve nothing. "He wouldn't.... he wouldn't resign right?" Itachi muttered to himself before the realisation hit him that Naruto may do that. He turned sharply and was at his car before the front door even slammed shut and clicked to signify that it locked automatically.

Itachi stormed his way up to the office, people flinging themselves left and right to get out of his path. They could sense from a mile away that their boss was not the usual cool, collected self. Itachi's eyes narrowed at the envelope he spotted from afar sitting on his table. 'Please don't be a resignation letter. Please don't' Itachi thought to himself as he approached it. His name was written neatly on the envelope in the shade of blue that Naruto writes with. The way it was written, Itachi could tell it was Naruto, only the blond would write with a fountain pen in this entire office.

The Uchiha swallowed as he picked up the envelope, trying to keep his hands steady as he opened it. Itachi took a shaky breath as he read through the letter, it made his eyes water at the emotions that flooded through him. The letter was a few pages long, listing all everything that Naruto was grateful for and how happy Itachi had made the blond. Naruto talked about how he never thought he would ever find happiness but happiness was exactly what he felt when he met Itachi and connected with him almost immediately.

Itachi felt emotions rise up his throat as his mind drifted to how happy he had felt with the blond. There had never been a time when he felt such happiness with someone. Ever. He had been relationships before but those never ended well, they were in it for the fame and the money. They never truly loved Itachi but this man... He had loved Itachi with all his heart, he just gave and gave but never expected anything from the Uchiha in return except for the same amount of love and respect.

Naruto had everything done properly and way ahead of their intended schedule, making sure they had time to hang out in the quiet comfort of their home and/or at cafes that Itachi loves visiting so much. 'I don't know what I am going to do without you...' Itachi cleared his throat a little, turning around to face the windows that showed the cityscape. He wiped the tear that rolled down his cheek. 'What did I do wrong?'

Naruto leaned against the bridge, the cold wind howling as it seeped into his bones. He had spent a lot of his time for these past few days crying about what he had done. He had applied to human resources to work from home so that he was not in Itachi's space, believing that Itachi would not want to see him at the moment. Naruto swallowed and wiped at his face again when he felt the hot tears escape. 'Come on, you're the one that did this, you don't deserve to cry about it.' Naruto berated himself as the sadness felt like death by thousands of papercuts. Every time he thought about it, another cut appears on his already damaged heart and mind. Naruto felt his lips tremble as he was about to burst into tears again. The blond took a deep breath and pushed his feelings into the back of his mind as he shoved his hands into his coat pockets and trudged to the nearest cafe.

Itachi kept a neutral face on as his mother spoke to them during their weekly gathering at the restaurants. He nodded passively as she spoke, barely registering what she was saying as his mind was plagued with the thoughts of Naruto and how he could fix it. He knows that if it was what Naruto wanted, he would have let Naruto go as that would make Naruto happy. But Itachi knows... he knows that Naruto is not like that, he knows that Naruto would not have done things the way he did with their relationship. Something must have happened to have affected the blond badly to make such a decision. Someone must have spoken to Naruto to make him break up with Itachi even though the relationship was going so well and they were communicating their likes and dislikes to each other clearly. That was how a relationship works, you communicate; you don't just break off a good healthy relationship without a reason.

"What is wrong Itachi?" Mikoto asked, concerned when she noticed that her son was acting differently to his usual aloof self. Itachi paused in his eating before setting his cutlery down. "Naruto broke up with me." Itachi muttered, feeling that if he said it any louder he would lose control of his feelings in front of his family. Fugaku raised an eyebrow, knowing that that was not the full extent of the problem. Itachi watched his parents carefully, his mother stiffened at the mentioning of Naruto breaking up with him. His father seemed to be intrigued by it as if unaware that such a thing occurred.

"Naruto said that he was ruining my reputation." Itachi said, choosing his words wisely to continue observing their reactions. "I just don't understand how that is possible. It might have taken me a while to convince Naruto to see his worth, that he is worth more than he thinks. Naruto might think that he is not worth it but he was happy with me and I know that because he told me. If you are happy, would you throw away the thing that you love?" Itachi asked rhetorically, staring straight at his mother who was doing her hardest to avoid his gazes. Fugaku was watching his son, curiosity shining in his eyes. He had not approved of the relationship per se but he would have not gone as far as interfering with his sons' love life, believing that what they decide to do, they will have to bear the consequences themselves.

Itachi watched the two of them, his dad seems to be thinking about what Itachi was saying, nodding along as if approving with the choice of words. His mother, on the other hand, was not hiding her emotions very well. With every word Itachi spoke about love and happiness with a significant other, her eyes shone with more and more guilt.

Itachi excused himself, saying he needed to get back into the office. Itachi narrowed his eyes at the floor before him. He knew it. Of course, that was going to happen. It was his mother that did it.
