Chapter One.
If the photo works it's of Sky
Sky was working on some rich jerks shiny new BMW, he had it up on the lift as he paced underneath it when Jenny parked outside the garage. She climbed from her car and walked directly into where he was standing.
"Hey," She beamed.
"Hey, what are you up to?" He asked, setting down his wrench and walking towards her.
"I think there's something wrong with my car."
"Why? What's wrong?"
"It's making a weird noise when I go down the highway."
"Stay off the highway," He said with a shrug.
"Sky please? Come on!"
"Alright, alright, I'll take a look as soon as I'm done here." He promised, walking back under the car.
"How long?"
"I don't know, awhile."
"Want some lunch?" She offered.
"I may work faster if I was fed," He teased.
She rolled her eyes before walking out of the garage and crossing the parking lot. A few blocks away was a small diner that Jenny and Sky liked to frequent. She stepped inside and their usual waiter came to the counter.
"Hey Jenny, where's Sky?" She asked with a bright smile.
"Working, I need a meatball sandwich."
"Sure thing," The waitress hurried away and Jenny rolled her eyes.
It was no secret that the waitress had a crush on Sky, she swooned and fawned all over him every time they went inside for lunch. She was nice enough but something about her got under Jenny's skin, she'd never been rude or done anything but she was just annoying. Jenny supposed she was just a little over protective of her step-brother but nobody was good enough for him .
"Here you go," The waitress returned with a white paper bag.
"Thanks," Jenny handed her a twenty and exited with out a backward glance.
Something about even seeing the girl set her on edge, her good mood completely ruined. She walked into the garage and set the bag on top of Sky's tool box.
"Brought you a sandwich,"
"Thanks."
"Your girlfriend was there," She said, crossing her arms.
"Who?" He asked, ducking out from under the car.
"You know who, the waitress."
"Holly?" He asked with a laugh.
"Yeah."
"You sound jealous."
"That's stupid why would I be jealous?" She asked, crossing her arms and looking away.
He chuckled as he wiped his hands off on a rag and walked towards where his lunch sat, stopping only to lift her chin.
"You know you're my number one priority."
"I don't like her," She said with a shrug.
"I know, which is exactly why it hasn't gone beyond flirting in a restaurant."
"So, how long until the car is done?"
"I'm going to do it next, then I have a few more to do. If you want to go see Dad later I thought we'd take him out to eat."
"He's not your dad," She teasingly reminded him.
"You know what I mean."
"How many cars do you have left today?"
"Six, not counting yours."
"It's Sunday....I thought you weren't even open." She motioned to the rest of the empty garage.
No other workers were inside, no bikes in the parking lot and the garage was always closed on Sundays.
"Yeah I'm taking some over time," He said, being sure not to look at her.
"Are you gambling again?" She asked hands on her hips.
"Jenny....."
"How much you in for?" She asked, her tone biting.
"It's....I can't help it...."
"I asked how much!"
"eighty grand......." He dropped his head in shame.
"Sky....."
"Don't lecture me, please....I'm already embarrassed."
"I thought you quit."
"I did for awhile then.......few months ago when we went to war with the Aces.....I was so stressed out I just....needed to take the edge off."
She sighed and shook her head, obviously disappointed with him. He was tired of letting her down, letting her dad down, letting his mom down. He pushed the thought away, his mom dying is what set him off and started his addiction to begin with. He couldn't count how many times Jenny's father had bailed him out of trouble before he started running with the Animals.
"I....I can't get that kind of money," She admitted.
"I don't want your money Jenny, I don't want your help."
"You're my brother, I'll help you."
"No, just...let me finish my work and take you and Dad to dinner, that's what I need."
She frowned, obviously debating saying no but punishing him wouldn't help now. So she sighed and gave a small nod.
"Okay, fine."
"Great take a taxi home and I'll come pick you up in your car when I'm finished."
"Okay."
She walked across the empty parking lot pausing before she pulled out her phone, her entire teenage and young adult years Sky had done everything to take care of her. To protect her and make sure she had everything she needed. Even when his mother had died from Cancer Sky didn't fall apart, because he was too busy making sure she was okay.
It hurt her to see him struggle with his addiction to gambling, some days he got so far in she never thought he'd get out and then other days it seemed like a bad dream. The MC paid good money for working the garage but it wasn't enough and she knew that. Normally she would take out a loan and help him but eighty thousand dollars was way beyond her reach. This time Sky was in way over his head.
She hailed a taxi and then climbed into the back seat, numbly giving the cabbie her address. In a few minutes he was parking in front of the small white house she owned. It had taken most of her inheritance that her father had set back for her, but she owned it free and clear and she loved it. She lived alone although Sky had a room that he often crashed in on nights they went out to eat.
Her living room was tidy and full of pictures, her and the girls from the MC, her and Sky through the years and one large family portrait taken just before the cancer got the best of his mother. Jenny's own mother had died when Jenny was still in diapers and Sky's mom was the closest thing she had.
Moving to the phone she dialed the number for the retirement home her father lived in, she planned to tell him they'd be by and not to eat dinner but she couldn't bring herself to tell him about the mess Sky was in.
