seven years ago...
I ran towards the bus stop, trying to reach it before the bus left. if I were late to work again, Martha would fire me on sight. maybe...
with a quick glimpse around to make sure no one was around, I pulled out my wand and quickly cast a spell. with the familiar rush of energy, I sped forwards and toward the bus doors just as they were about to close. with a hurried apology, I headed to the back and sank into the blue fabric seats, breathing a sigh of relief. Not today Martha, I thought. I bent over and unzipped the front pocket of my bag to grab my headphones. plugging them into my phone, I insert them in my ears and scroll through my playlist. it was all musicals and Katy Perry because, as my sister Quinn said, "I need to be gayer than I already am."
with a tired chuckle at the joke, I click on a song and lean back in my seat, staring out the window.
if you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a witch. a story witch to be exact. I don't know why, considering my parents were both poison witches, but they never cared about it. my sister is a luck witch, meaning she can give people good or bad luck. she had so much fun with that when we were kids. She always gave me bad luck when I stole the remote or broke her legos with my trucks. but she sometimes gave me good luck at my baseball games, like when I almost broke my leg when I was 14, or when I applied for this job at an office working as an intern for Martha Hart, the rudest woman I ever met.
I didn't have poison powers or luck manipulation, but I never cared. I always loved the fact I could jump into different stories and had enhanced puzzle skills. I also could sense magic and was surprisingly good at reading emotions. my mother always came to me to figure out who ate all the Oreos.
"uh, hey. could I sit here?" I look up to see a guy standing there with a hesitant expression. "yeah, of course. let me move this.." I move my backpack to the ground beneath my seat so he could sit next to me. with a muttered thank you, he sat down and set down his bag. I take in his appearance. To be honest, he was quite cute. he had blond curly hair and light blue eyes. I look at his clothes. he was wearing a green cardigan with a brown shirt under it with light brown jeans. he caught me staring and gave me a confused look. my face flushed and I looked away with embarrassment.
I snuck another glance. I saw him pull out some headphones like mine and open his phone. he scrolled through a playlist before clicking on a song. I went back to looking out the window at the passing houses. a couple of seconds later, my headphones disconnected, and a random song I recognized as Heathers the musical started playing. the guy jumped and paused his music, stopping the music. "shit, I'm so sorry. No worries, my headphones do that sometimes." I responded, trying not to blush. "by the way, I actually love Heathers. it's one of my all-time favorite musicals. really?" he chuckled nervously. "my friends always said it was weird."
"no, it's really good. my favorite is freeze your brain, I'm guessing... I'm gonna say meant to be yours?" he laughed, the sound filling my heart with happiness. "yes, actually. it's just a really good song. well, I agree. By the way, I never caught your name. oh right," he laughed. "my name's Scott, how about you? milo. nice to meet you Scott."
we talked for the rest of the bus ride. I learned that we were both the same age, 18, that his favorite color is teal and he loved poppies and deer. he also hates anchovies, for some weird reason. he just hates fish in general. by the time we reached my stop, we were talking so much I almost missed my stop. "oh shit, I'm gonna be late. uh, can I get your number quickly? we'll talk later." I asked. he nodded and I passed him my phone for him to put his number in. "here you go," he said, passing me my phone. "have a good day. you too, nice meeting you!" I called, already halfway down the aisle. I made it to the doors just in time. I slid through the doors before they closed, thinking about the strange boy I just met.
he was a fellow witch?
