four years ago...

I sat at the counter at the Shadows and Spells bookshop, a local bookstore. I had quit my job with Martha last year, and since then I worked here. it was much better than the assistant job. the lady who owns it, Lizzie Shadow, was super nice. She always makes star wars references, and I get a discount on all books. she also happens to be an animal witch that gave me the charm to understand my cat.

I counted the tips from the day, smiling when I saw the little folded piece of paper in a 5-dollar bill. I unfolded it.

have a good day :)

'This is why I love him,' I thought, slipping the paper in my pocket. I stood, heading to the back room when the bell on the door rang. I turned to see an old man, walking with a cane. I smiled. "sorry sir, we're closed for the day." "oh please, it's my granddaughter's birthday tomorrow. she'll be devastated if I can't get her the book she wanted." I hesitated. "ok, but you'll have to be quick." I stepped back behind the cash register, pulling up the records. "do you know the title of the book?" "something called Solivagency? it's about an elf." I checked the records. "yep, should be in the fantasy section." I pointed.

as the man went to find the book, my phone vibrated. I pulled out of my pocket and check my messages. it was a text from my dad: be careful on your way home. there are a lot of witch hunters out. I typed out a response and put away my phone as the man walked up to me, holding the book. he handed it to me, and I rang it up. "that'll be $22.99, sir." I said handing it back. he handed me cash, and I put it in the register. "Young man," he began. "yes sir?"

"Have you noticed any witches around here?"

I froze. the man's calm smile turned into a maniacal grin. I pretended not to notice. "no sir. I haven't." I responded, trying to hide the tremor in my voice. his grin grew larger.

"you know, we've heard of a story witch working at this shop. would you know anything about that?" "Sir, you need to leave," I said, not making eye contact. "see, I don't think you've answered my question. Do you know who the story witch is, Milo Campbell?" my heart dropped. "are you a witch?"

I dashed to the back door, yanking it open and making a break towards the trees. I could hear the sound of footsteps behind me. luckily, I had the advantage of playing baseball for 5 years. I ran as fast as I could, trying to lose the man behind me. I could see safety, I could feel it, I was almost there-

as I ran, I could feel a piercing feeling through my chest, then pain. unimaginable pain. I fell, reaching towards the safety that was my home. 'please,' I thought. 'I can't leave them.' I looked to see an arrow protruding from my chest. the man walked over, smirking. he bent over, and whispered in my ear.

"you lost."

with that, he yanked the arrow from my chest. more pain, and then it slowly went black.
