i. Lola Foley

~3RD PERSON~

"Don't adjust whatever device you're hearing this on. It's me live and in stereo. No return engagements. No encore. And this time, absolutely no requests. Get a snack. Settle in. Because I'm about to tell you the story of my life."

Lola walked into school that morning with a bitter face and tired eyes. She looked like she wanted to beat up anyone that looked in her direction. That's what was going to happen.

She walked through with some of her best friends; The guys that all loved the athletic department more than their own moms and Jessica Davis. Her brother, Justin Foley, and her boyfriend, Montgomery De La Cruz were usually the people she hung out around the most unless she was with Jess. While she loved Monty as much as she could, Jessica was her platonic soulmate.

She was so tired of the "I'm sorry for your loss" pity that she wanted to punch the next person who said something along those lines. She had her phone flooding with unread messages from people, mourning for her and keeping her in their prayers- what bullshit. The only message she had opened was from Olivia Baker, who surprised Lola with her text, Lola assumed Olivia would've hated her after she lost her only child.

When she walked into the school, she held her Liberty High duffle and wore her boyfriend's varsity jacket. She had cheer practice, and then she would be staying at Bryce's house to get away from her stoned mom and abusive 'step-dad' if that's what you could call him. Her mom brought random junkies to the house, called them her boyfriend, and they would leave in a few months- her mom was always heartbroken.

Monty, her boyfriend, was right at her side when they walked in, arm tucked around her waist and smirk lining his lips, ready to throw hands at anyone who breathed in his girlfriend's direction. Justin was on her other side, holding onto her hand since it was her first day back at school since she heard the cassettes.

As soon as they entered, the 2nd bell rang, signaling it was time for class. She noticed Clay Jensen staring at the poster on Hannah's locker.

She kissed her boyfriend on the cheek, "I'll meet you in class, alright?" She asked, turning to look at him. He nodded and pulled her in for a sweet peck on the lips before starting to walk away.

"I'll see you in class, beautiful," He responded, and she blushed a light shade of pink before she walked away to talk to Clay.

Her glare returned as she stalked over to Clay and raised her voice a bit, "What the hell are you doing?"

She knew Hannah was a liar, and she didn't want Clay to fall into her trap and bring everyone down with him, including herself, just like Hannah.

He stuttered a bit before responding as Lola had never talked to him but once before, "Nothing, I'm just-"

She cut him off, "Looking for something?" Her voice had changed into a hiss

He was confused; he didn't know what she was talking about, he hadn't gotten the tapes yet, or so she thought, "What would I be looking for."

She rolled her eyes; she was fed up with his bull, "You tell me," she responded rather harshly.

Clay was confused; popular kids never talked to him; he was a big introvert, "Do you even know my name," he was unsure where the conversation was going.

"Of course I do, Clay, why wouldn't I," She scoffed and rolled her eyes for the 5th time that morning.

The counselor, Mr. Porter, comes down the hall noticing the two, before reminding them, "Guys, second bell."

"You're not that innocent, Jensen, and I don't give a shit what she says because she was a liar."

"I don't think you're that innocent either, and I think you're scared she'll drag you down somehow," Clay fought back weakly, hoping to win the argument.

Mr. Porter had now gotten annoyed, "Ms. Foley, Homeroom now, please."

She walked away but not before she shot a glare towards Clay and Mr. Porter. They were both reasons Hannah was dead, but it's not like they were the only ones. Lola pushed Hannah to her breaking point. That was something she couldn't forgive herself for even if Lola was a liar.

The final bell had rung, and Lola made a run for it to her boyfriend's car; his infamous jeep where they've had one two many date nights. Getting through the school day was a disaster. She didn't make it to math after she had a breakdown during communications, Mr. Porter asked to see her to which she decided to ignore and took a smoke break in the bathroom, she only got to see Monty during lunch and she couldn't find Jess anywhere, and her brother had skipped after second period. To make matters worse she already had 2 breakdowns by fifth period. Her eyes were puffy, red, and the bags under her eyes seemed to be darker.

She wanted to get off school grounds as fast as possible, she decided to skip cheer and texted Jessica that she would be missing, but it didn't help her anxiety. She needed a blunt or a hit from her bong, something to relieve the stress.

She wasn't going home anytime soon, though. When she got out of the building, she was stopped by Courtney Crimson, the girl Lola hated with all her heart.

"Hey, Lola, sweetie, how are you," Courtney asked, pulling Lola in for a hug, which Lola immediately got out of.

"What the fuck are you doing, I'm fine. Keep your sympathy bullshit to yourself, " Lola shot back, she was in no mood for talking to Courtney Crimson. No one could be more guilty than Lola Foley, but she had enough of everyone asking if she was okay because even if no one saw it, deep down, she was the most broken.

"Well, I just feel like we need to be there for each other." Courtney tried to get through to Lola but still to no avail.

"What fucking world do you live in Courtney, we aren't friends, and frankly, I don't want to be friends with you after what you did to Hannah." She was almost at her limit, if she heard one more word about Hannah come out of Courtney's mouth, she was going to explode like a bomb, but Courtney continued anyway.

"I was just making sure you're okay," she explained. What she hadn't realized is she detonated the bomb.

Lola brought her fist back and punched her straight in the nose. As soon as she got the first punch in, she hit Courtney a second time, knocking her to the ground. She was straddling her while throwing punches at her face, blood, and bruises forming along her knuckles. Courtney would probably end up with a black eye and broken nose.

A crowd had formed around them by now, and Montgomery, Justin, Bryce, and Zach were walking over to see what the problem was, and to say they were surprised to see Courtney getting beat up by Lola was an understatement. While Monty and Bryce were busy cheering Lola on, Zach and Justin were busy trying to tear her off Courtney before getting in trouble.

After a few tugs, they were able to pull Lola away from Courtney, pushing her towards the car.

"I wonder where you get your abusive side from, maybe it's your mom's abusive boyfriend, or maybe you picked it up from your own boyfriend."

Courtney had said enough to set Lola off again. She turned to pounce, but Justin and Zach were too strong for her to get out of.

"I swear to god I'm going to kill the next person that asks me if I'm ok," she said, as she and her friends were walking towards Monty's jeep.

As a joke, Bryce asked, "Are you okay." She turned to him a glared.

"Easy there tiger," Monty laughs out as he ruffles her hair. She rolls her eyes before turning to Bryce, Monty's arm wrapped around her waist.

"Hey, is it okay if Justin and I stay at your's tonight? Mom's boyfriend is going kind of wild," She asked already knowing the answer.

"Yeah, parents aren't home and pool house is empty. Your welcome to stay even when my parents are home, I'm sure my mom loves you more than me," He explains, making the whole group laugh.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the first time Lola had met Hannah Baker. At Kat's going away party which was being hosted at Hannah's house. Kat and Lola were friends, not best friends, but friends.

Kat was leading Hannah through the house introducing her to everyone. The first person she was introduced to was Jeff Atkins, Lola's best friend at the time.

"Hey, Atkins, I want you to meet the new girl," Kat had called out to him. He walked over and shook Hannah's hand offering her his million-dollar smile. Hannah smiled back before introducing herself.

"Hey, I'm Hannah," she said

"I'm Jeffery, everyone calls me Jeff," He replies, his smile never leaving his face

"Ok, that's enough flirting Atkins, come on Hannah. See you later Atkins," Kat interrupts them, dragging Hannah away to meet the next people.

"All I did was smile."

"Exactly," Kit yelled out as they walked away

There is a couple, sitting on the couch. The girl is straddling her boyfriend while they makeout. Kat stops Hannah right behind them and clears her throat. The girl looks up from eating her boyfriend's face off and glares at the girls behind her until she realizes who they were.

She quickly jumps off her boyfriend's lap, who groans. She then hugs Kat tightly and smiles at Hannah.

"Hi, I'm Lola Foley, if you've already met Justin he is my brother, and this is my boyfriend Montgomery," She explains going in for a hug with Hannah

"Oh ok, um- I'm Hannah, Hannah Baker," Hannah stutters out.

"I'm sure we're going to get along very well, Hannah Baker," Lola says, excited to make friends with the new girl.

This point was when Lola's life went completely downhill and changed forever.
