Chapter 1~Enoch
Fuck .
My tools were missing. In front of me lay a beautiful clay baby doll with some wooden limbs and a patched up dress. His name was Jeffrey, and he was nearly complete. The only thing he needed was some joints in the knuckles and a weapon.
"Anything you need, Enoch? " Olive asked, popping up from behind me. Sometimes I wish that she just wouldn't do that, it annoys me to my guts. She's a really helpful person, she does aids me with my dolls, I can see that she's interested in me, but I really think it's time for her to let go and move on.
It's not that I'm taking her for granted or something, I just don't want to hurt her feelings. I probably don't have any, since my heart's already rusty and old.
"Screwdriver and some nails." I replied.
Olive handed me the tools as I attached the fingers and finished up the doll. There it was, Jeffrey O'Connor. I like to name my dolls after me, so that it feels like family. Or whatever shit, nevermind. Jeffrey stood there, with his cracked head, missing eyeballs and a sharp knife in his hand.
"Oh, Enoch. He's beautiful!" Olive praised. Of course, it was such an obvious lie. No one in this house truly appreciated my work. Even Miss Peregrine doesn't come down here in the basement because she easily gets creeped out by those jars of human hearts.
"Thank you, Olive." I said, not really meaning it, just to make her feel better. I walked out of the room, to get a glass of water, and trying to avoid conversation with Olive.
It was four in the afternoon, with the sun shining bright and birds chirping. Miss Peregrine had just came back from town, getting a few supplies. It was nearly time for supper, with just a few moments of time before the next rewind. Living in a loop was boring, but it was safe enough for a sustainable life.
"Hello, Enoch. How was your day?" Miss Peregrine asked.
"It was fine. " I replied.
"Oh yes, and Olive dear, would you mind boiling some water for the broth?, we'll be having some risotto with lamb shanks today."
"Yes, Miss Peregrine. " Olive answered.
Taking this opportunity, I dashed to the door and exited the house, walking through the garden. Everyday, there was this spot behind the oak trees where it showed the beautiful scenery of the beach. It was isolated and always provided some privacy and fresh air for me.
A few hours later, I returned. I guessed I was a little late because everyone was seated by the time I was there.
"Enoch O'Connor, you are twenty three minutes late. " Miss Peregrine said, as she took a glance at her clock.
"I'm sorry ma'am. It won't happen again." I apologized.
"I hope so too. Sit down so that we can start our meal."
I took a seat beside Emma and we all started to pray. Just as we were about to dig in, the doorbell rang.
"Who could this be?" Miss Peregrine said. We were all wondering about it. Ever since the hollow incident with Jake, everyone has been a little shaken up.
Miss Peregrine stood up and walked towards the door and we quietly followed behind. The knocks on the door were getting louder and faster, as if the person outside had a very serious matter to say.
The children and I stood at the back of the hall as Miss Peregrine walked up and opened the door.
And in front stood two ladies, dressed in green.
"Peregrine!" The older one said as she pulled Miss Peregrine into a tight embrace. Both of them were soon in tears. We just awkwardly stood there, staring at them.
"Oh gosh, what a shame. There's guests here, I forgot." said the older lady, who now quickly wiped away her tears. Miss Peregrine did the same and turned around to introduce the new people.
"Children, today we'll be having two new people to stay here." Miss Peregrine said.
"Two? Oh no, you've got it wrong. I have to go back, Peregrine. Only Nandar will be staying here."
"What? But I thought-"
"My people needs me, Peregrine. Just protect my niece. I promise I'll be back."
Saying so, the lady rushed out of the door, leaving Miss Peregrine in a daze.
By this time, everyone's eyes were fixed on the new girl. Her pale face remained expressionless, whereas her eyes were wet with tears. Her shiny black hair reached her waist and her embroidered emerald dress glistened in the dim light. She looked Asian, looking different from us all. In her hand was a long dagger, with sparkled with green emeralds.
Miss Peregrine turned around to her and gave her a warm smile. "Have you eaten, dear?" She asked. The girl nodded. She quickly wiped away her tears.
"Emma, please show her to the room she'll be staying. We have an extra room upstairs. Well introduce each other tomorrow."
"Yes, Miss Peregrine." Emma replied before leading the girl upstairs.
"Well, um. Okay, children. Let's continue our meal and have a movie." Miss Peregrine said.
Without the fact that there was someone new joining us, everything else here was as usual, everything boring in this loop.
Everyone went to bed early that night, probably eager to get to know the new girl. Tomorrow. Well, I wasn't. More people, less privacy. More socializing. Ugh.
I went to bed with a grumpy mind and a cold heart.
Enoch
