Baby We Were Meant To Be (Part One) (Duncan and Courtney)

This Oneshot was a request from @shapeofduncney :)

Everything was going so well.

Courtney snuggled into the crook of Duncan's arm, frowning. "This girl is SO going to die. She's so stupid, making out with her boyfriend in the middle of the woods!"

Duncan just chuckled as he intently watched the couple in the movie get murdered. His TV wasn't as good as Courtney's, but her parents didn't much like him so they always hung at his place.

Courtney discreetly cuddled up closer to Duncan. She'd never admit it, but scary movies terrified her. She had lied that she didn't like them because of the lack of intellect put into the making of them, but Duncan knew that was a total bluff.

He saw right through her, and though she'd never admit it, she loved him for it.

Whenever the two would go on walks at night together and something would rustle in the bushes, Courtney would jump and grab Duncan's arm, then act like she was just pretending to be scared. Duncan would stifle a laugh and put his arm around her, instantly calming her down.

The horror movie ended and the credits rolled.

Courtney rolled her eyes. "I'm glad that trainwreck is over. There was hardly any plot."

"True, but the plot was replaced with blood. So it was still good," Duncan smirked, knowing Courtney wasn't into bloody murders. Courtney suppressed a shudder and rolled her eyes again, sighing this time for dramatic affect.

Duncan leaned over and pressed a long, soft kiss to Courtney's cheek. He'd done it many times before but it never failed to make Courtney's heart skip a beat. She turned her head to look into his deep blue eyes and they melted into a kiss.

Despite how passionate it was, it was not lust. It was pure love.

Too bad it wasn't that way forever.

The first time Courtney truly disrespected Duncan, beyond their usual bickering, it turned out fine.

"Who are you texting?" Courtney asked, a slight edge to her voice.

Duncan looked up at her. "Geoff," he responded casually. To his surprise, Courtney leaned over and snatched his phone.

"Hey!" He cried. She'd never done that before.

There's a first time for everything.

Courtney's heart raced as she looked down at the phone, but her worries were ceased when she saw that it really was Geoff.

Courtney had no reason to believe that Duncan would lie to her, but with how much she'd come to love him, she was afraid, no, terrified, to lose him. But he didn't know that. All he could think of was how mad he was that she snatched his phone.

Duncan thought that incident was a one time thing. Courtney wouldn't truly disrespect him, they loved each other.

Right?

Two weeks later, everything was going great. The phone thing had created a bit of distance between the two, but Duncan got over it and everything went back to normal. Then it struck them a second time; another real fight, another toxic moment.

"Wanna hang out tonight babe? My parents are on a business trip together, so it could be just you and me in my bedroom and they wouldn't know a thing," Courtney blushed, on the phone with Duncan. She never thought she'd let a boy lay next to her until she was much older, but Duncan changed that. He changed a lot of things for Courtney.

Courtney smiled and twirled her hair in her fingers, already planning out their night in her head. "Sorry babe! I'm taking Zoey to see her first scary movie. Gotta help the underclassmen get into horror movies! And plus, her and I have become friends since being forced to sit together in Health," Duncan laughed.

Courtney was silent.

"Princess?" Duncan asked, confused.

Courtney felt her blood boil. Why would he hang with Zoey instead of her? She was scared again. Terrified of losing him. She wouldn't admit her fear to herself though. Barlow's have no fear. So she channeled her fear into anger. "Whatever," she hissed quietly, before raising her voice, "Have fun with your new GIRLFRIEND!" She hung up on him instantly, a raging fire inside her chest. Or was it a hole being formed because of Duncan's absence?

Duncan's ears stung from Courtney's loud tone.

And his heart stung from her harsh words.

Things got worse and worse from there. It seemed that everything made Courtney freak out, and Duncan was done with it. It got to the point where every time she hurt him, he loved her a little less. Respected her a little less, cared a little less.

"This is my favorite part," Courtney beamed as Westley and Buttercup kissed. She leaned her head on Duncan's shoulder. He was stiff to her touch. He didn't reciprocate it at all. Courtney noticed. She looked at him.

"Don't Westley and Buttercup remind you of us?" She tried. Duncan gave nothing but a curt shrug. Courtney turned back to the movie.

Westley and Buttercup's kiss suddenly seemed a lot less meaningful.

Things went on like that for months. When Duncan spoke with other girls, Courtney got mad. When Courtney grabbed onto Duncan's arm, he pretended to cough and pulled it away, putting it in his pocket instead of back into her hands.

She was no longer the girl he met in Language Arts 2, and he was no longer the guy.

Courtney's jealously and Duncan's coldness went on and on and then it happened. Their lightning struck at the same time and their relationship went blazing up in flames.

Courtney and Duncan were laying in bed together after a night of awkward silence. Both were worried to lose each other and at this point, being quiet was the only thing that kept them from fighting.

Duncan's phone dinged. Courtney scooted her head over to look at the text.

"Can you like, not?" Duncan asked, annoyance filling his tone.

"What?" Courtney's eyebrows furrowed.

"Look over my shoulders. It's annoying."

Courtney pulled herself away from him and got out of the bed. "I wasn't even doing anything wrong!" She argued. Duncan tossed his phone to the side and sat up glaring.

"Yeah right." He rolled his eyes. His tone became aggressive. "You have absolutely no trust in me, Courtney." If there was one thing that showed duncney's relationship was sinking like the Titanic, it was that Duncan stopped calling Courtney 'Princess', and Courtney stopped calling Duncan 'Dunkie'.

Courtney was more horrified then she'd ever been of losing Duncan. But instead of telling him that, she, again, channeled her fear into anger. She didn't know what else to do with it, it was how she'd dealt with fear her whole life.

"I do too trust you, but maybe I shouldn't! Your probably hooking up with Gwen, and Zoey and random other girls too!" She shouted, shoving anger at him like a knife.

Duncan scowled and pushed himself out of the bed. He walked right up to Courtney and looked her in the eyes, his energy filled with rage. "You know what? It's OVER, Courtney!" He spit her name that he used to love so much out like it was venom. He wasn't done, though. "I never cheated on you, never even had the slightest feeling for another girl while we were together, but now I realize that Zoey, Gwen or even the stupidest bimbo off the street would be better than YOU!" He stormed out of the room, slamming the door on Courtney's heart as he went.
