Chris and Chef (Chref)
This is by far the most reviewed ship I've ever done in both of the opinions books last year. The reason for this was that I thought I did a lousy job explaining myself the first time, then tried again in the second book to try to get it right. Now a year later, I'll be looking at it for a third time, which has to be a record of some kind. Due to this, I'll be showing both of my old opinions to lead up to my current new opinion. It might sound like kind of a cop-out, but they both need to be shown. After all, together, both past opinions helped develop the mindset I now have on this ship. That is pretty important when writing about your re-hashed opinions on anything. So anyway, here is the big finale to this book, which all of you have been looking forward to hopefully. Thank you so much for reading this and I'll be more than happy to ceremoniously complete the book with my further thoughts in the next part.
Old, Old Opinion: "Believe it or not, I think this ship could be on to something. Throughout the regular Total Drama series, I've noticed what appears to be mutual romantic interest between these two characters. Sure, I could be reading too much into another bromance (something I mentioned when talking about the ship between Owen and Noah), but how could you explain Chris's slight breakdown in the Total Drama Action finale when Chef was about to leave the show? He never was truly that close to Chef until then. Even more evidence for this idea comes after, when the two characters have more moments of shared dialogue in Total Drama: World Tour. It is very subtle, but if you watch the entire season, you will see what I mean.
So, do I support this possible romance. The answer is a surprising yes. I would support these two characters being together completely, with no problem whatsoever. My only problem with this ship is the age difference between both Chris and Chef, which could be a 20 year difference. However, they are both adults, so the age difference doesn't bother me too much."
New Old Opinion: "In the last edition, I said that I fully supported this ship. I said that from past evidence, there was no doubt that Chris and Chef may have mutual romantic feelings towards each other. The evidence I used was from the Total Drama Action finale, which I admit was not enough to support my claim. That is why I decided to re-do my claim in the second edition, this time using more evidence and even pointing out possible flaws with my own opinion. I apologize for those who were subjected to the terrible version of this claim in the last book, and that this time I'll really try my best to say what needs to be said right.
Since the last time I reviewed this ship, my opinions really haven't changed that much. I still think that there is something going on between these two characters and it definitely isn't plain old friendship. However, my view changed from thinking both characters knew about these feelings. Now, I think only Chris knows the truth, and Chef doesn't. If you are wondering why I suddenly changed my view this far, let me support my feelings with what I've seen in the series.
Some people may argue that this evidence sucks because Chris is possibly a sociopath and cannot feel attachment towards other people, I can disagree. Yes, Chris is clearly suffering from some type of mental disorder, but I don't think it is sociopathy. Instead, I believe all it is might be a bad case of being self-centered. The reason I say this is because if Chris were a true sociopath, he wouldn't have tried to prevent the contestants' deaths a few times in the past. Sure, it was all based towards horrible lawsuits, but still the fact remains that he intervened. If Chris were a true sociopath, he would've just sat back and watched Gwen be killed by an escaped serial killer in the first season or the whole Total Drama Action cast drown due to malfunctions in the challenge. Sure, I think in the later seasons this simple egotistical nature could be developing into sociopathy, with evidence such as ditching the entire Pahkitew Island cast when the island was about to explode, but it isn't there yet. I've done some research in the past about sociopathy, and from what I've learned, Chris doesn't have it. So, it is safe to say he could form attachments to others.
That is why I say I think he may like Chef. In various episodes in the past, which include that Total Drama Action episode I talked about in the past, the evidence is very clear. Unlike most of the contestants and all of the interns, Chris seems to treat Chef with high levels of respect. For one, he listened to his complaints when he barely left the show to work on a cruise ship, to the point where Chris actually started crying quite a bit. Second, most of the time in the series, Chris includes Chef in his activities, either through involvement in challenges or watching the challenge through the sidelines with him. Yeah, I may be getting too deep into this and be interpreting a really good friendship instead in the forms of a relationship, but I just strongly feel the ship is real.
Now, why do I think Chef doesn't know about Chris's feelings towards him. Well, the reason for this are a few conversations the two characters had in both Total Drama Action and Total Drama World Tour. In these conversations, Chris was talking about possibly getting Chef a date with a girl he saw, which were brief time wise in the show, but can still be used as evidence. There is a great possibility Chris doesn't want Chef to know these feelings and thus pretends these feelings don't exist. Maybe he thinks Chef doesn't feel the same way, and would reject him if the feelings ever were exposed. That is why I believe this is one-sided, at least for now. A future season could prove my theory about the ship existing to be wrong, but for now I think it very much could exist."
New Opinion: Why on Earth did I think Chris was not a sociopath? Sociopathy means to have no attachments or empathy towards anyone, both of which Chris expresses time and time again. The only reason he stopped Gwen getting killed by a serial killer and stopped almost the whole Total Drama Action cast from drowning was due to not wanting his pants to get sued off. It was not because he cared at all about the contestants. No one with empathy would have left the entire cast of Pahkitew Island to possibly explode in an hour or have tortured so many teenagers and young adults in the challenges he has created for five seasons. (Total Drama: All-Stars and Total Drama Pahkitew Island were combined into one season by the creators of the show.) Also, Chef is definitely depicting almost as much sociopathic tendencies as Chris. Food poisoning teenagers on purpose and creating even more dangerous challenges than Chris easily gets a person put into that category. Clearly they are both sociopathic.
Why did I mention the sociopathic tendencies in both characters just now if I am reviewing the ship between them? The simple answer is that it is a shared trait between the characters, and is proof that they could indeed like each other. Before anyone calls me off on this, there is one more thing you need to know about sociopathy. Sociopaths are attracted to other sociopaths, meaning that is highly possible Chris and Chef do like each other. Even if they do crazy things to each other that would otherwise be unforgivable once in a while, it is just proof that they are still sociopathic. It will not hinder a relationship between the two.
Besides the shared sociopathic traits, both characters have been shown on-screen to depict evidence of liking each other. In the Total Drama Action finale, Chris cried over the thought of Chef leaving the show in a way a lover cries over losing their date. Why do you think he easily gave him the raise and a vacation to keep him from leaving? Chris would not do that normally to anyone. With Total Drama: All-Stars, there is the hundredth episode where Chef pretty much had a heart attack metaphorically speaking when Chris was kidnapped by Ezekiel. Not only did he clearly worry about the show ending, but when seeing the danger Chris was in, Chef further panicked to the point he tried to save him alone. That is not mentioning many other examples, which could be made into an entire novel's worth of material. The point is that the relationship is pretty much confirmed as true, and I ship it.
There will be a day when my thoughts get confirmed somehow by the creators of the show, sometime in the distant future when the series ends. If somehow they are not, then Chris and Chef are probably good friends I guess.
