"None Down, Eighteen to Go (Part 2)" Episode Review
Episode Summary: The eighteen teams arrive in Moracco, the next destination of the Ridonculous Race. Here, teams have to choose the five spices they think won't be too overwelming (kind of an impossible task) and race across the desert on camel to a local restaurant. While some teams make record time there, others struggle in the blistering heat of the desert. Really, it is the camels that suffer the most in this challenge, as one has to carry the combined weight of the Reality TV Pros and another passes out due to dehydration. When the teams arrive at the restaurant, their spices are then brewed, and one unfortunate member of each team must drink the spicy stew. The effects of these stews include burning inside the mouth, temporary blindness, stomach aches that result in near barfing, and the desire to drink camel spit to cool your burning mouth, which might make a camel barf. Teams must race across the desert again after finishing the stew and make it to the first Chill Zone to finish the challenge.
In the end, the Best Friends finish first, proving once and for all friendship does conquer all (maybe). The Police Cadets finish second, and the Ice Dancers finish in third, downgrading their Olympic silver metal to a bronze. The losers "shockingly" enough are the delusional LARPers, whom are the first team to be cut from the Ridonculous Race. Now they can join the unfortunate club of contestants first eliminated from any of the competitions, which include half mutant/ half zombie Ezekiel, the lovebirds Geoff and Bridgette, the lying Staci, the Dumb Princess Lindsay, and the beatboxer Beardo. The remaining seventeen teams prepare for their departure to their next destination, Paris. Well this is going to be interesting, considering the last time a Total Drama episode took place in Paris, it was hated by a majority of the fan base. Hopefully, it doesn't happen twice, but just in case, don't bet any money on it being great.
Positive Aspects: Easily, this episode of the Ridonculous Race could compete with the better episodes of Total Drama Island. There are many traits that this episode has that the earlier episodes of Total Drama shared with it. Let us just say there is a reason I gave this episode an A.
First off, the plot gets strait to the point of this episode, the challenge in Moracco. Many earlier episodes of Total Drama, especially one of my personal favorites, "The Sucky Outdoors", cut back on the exposition like this episode and go right to the challenge. The result of doing this creates more time for the side plots to develop and more time to create actual humor. Both episodes benefit in these departments due to this good move by the writers, and the episode here gets a better grade as a result of this.
Speaking of the sub-plots, they were extremely entertaining. In this episode, we are presented with three main plots for the characters, which vary in length but are all extremely entertaining. The first of these plots are between the Best Friends Carrie and Devin, and their devoted friendship throughout the episode. Their friendship causes them to stay strong throughout the entirety of the challenge, such as not being weakened by the stew like most of the other teams and finding their way easily out of the desert both times. In the end, their strength causes them to win the challenge, which is rewarding to both them and the viewers. That is also not mentioning Carrie's secret crush on Devin the entire time, which adds a little comedy to their parts of the episode. The second of the main plots are the struggles Dwayne and Junior, the members of the Father and Son team, must face in order to win this challenge. Their camel passes out due to dehydration in the middle of the desert, the stew causes Dwayne to temporarily go blind and struggle across the desert the second time around, and the two just barely make it to the Chill Zone. The reason these two make it is Dwayne's determination not to let down his son, and Junior not wanting their team to be eliminated first and face ridicule back in school. You may find the reasons they made it either a little pathetic or really well developed, but personally I find it extremely entertaining. The third and final of these plots is the slow decline of the LARPers, the losers of this entire challenge. Their plans to form some type of an alliance fails because of their weird belief that their role playing is real, they board the last plane that leaves two hours later than the others, they are some of the last competitors to reach the restaurant, and their use of "magic" causes them to lose the game. While it is sad that they were eliminated first, I still found their decline kind of funny and well developed. Their plots, and the two others, are examples of the great writing shown in this Total Drama spin-off.
Finally, the humor is spot on. Every few seconds of this episode, I found myself laughing to the most minor of jokes that were snuck into the plot of this episode. Such examples are the Beary jokes, the over-competiveness of the Ice Dancers, Junior's lack of faith in his father, and the Stepbrothers begging their parents to divorce each other in order to get them out of the competition and out of each other's lives. These few jokes, like many others in this episode, are examples of well written regular and dark humor, a good thing in a parody of pretty much anything.
Overall, you can clearly see my episode rating of an A was well deserved and that the Ridonculous Race is going to be a great spin-off of the regular Total Drama series.
Negative Aspects: My only problems with this episode are that the Goths weren't given enough screen time again and I still prefer Chris to Don as host. Otherwise the rest of the episode is really solid.
