"My Way or Zimbabwe" Episode Review
Episode Summary: After the craziness that followed the competitors in Finland, the remaining eleven contestants go someone "serene" to "lick their wounds"; Zimbabwe, West Africa. You know, a country that has possibly some of the worst crime rates in the entire world. I bet the challenge will be extra safe, and for once not try to kill anybody.
However, the Ice Dancers decide to fly to Hawaii instead, due to the lava rock curse that Crimson mentioned the episode before. This makes them for once fall behind the other teams, all because they believe that a volcanic rock cursed them with bad luck. Worse, they preform a "special ceremony" for the lava rock once in Hawaii, while they should be racing with the other teams in Zimbabwe. Either the Ice Dancers are extremely stupid for believing a tiny lava rock could curse them, or they are stupid for not taking the flight to Zimbabwe with the other teams in the first place. You can take your pick on whether one or both ideas apply to them.
As for the remaining ten teams who didn't ditch the competition for bad luck charms, all of them arrive safely in Zambia. The reason for this is due to the fact air travel doesn't land in Zimbabwe, so the contestants will have to arrive there some other way. For the time being, all the teams must ride jeeps right near Victoria Falls, which will send them strait to Zimbabwe for the second part of the challenge. Of course due to this being a race, many of the teams barely crash into each other or almost cause major accidents near the Don Box where the first tip is. The first team to arrive is surprisingly the Rockers, who have kept their lead from Finland. How did they get so good all of a sudden? Well, Rock thinks it is because Spud's reaction time is improving, which is a pretty dumb idea. Maybe the Ice Dancer's lava rock allowed for them to keep the lead instead. I'm sure that sounds a lot more logical than faster reaction time!
The tip from the Don Box reveals that in order to reach Zimbabwe, the teams must go on a life raft and go down the waterfall on them. They must also take "epic" selfies while falling to what might possibly be their deaths. Yeah, no one is going to be "licking their wounds" from Finland, are they? As expected, most of the teams find this challenge horrifying and scream as they fall down the waterfall. Even worse, the Rockers and the Father and Son team barely drown while going down the falls. Of course this being a cartoon, it doesn't happen, but the thought of the challenge itself is pretty horrifying in itself.
The fall from Victoria Falls causes another sub-plot to develop between Dwayne and Junior of the Father and Son team. Due to the height of the falls, they both get separated from each other. Dwayne, fearing for his son's life, stupidly decides to climb to the top of Victoria Falls to see if his son climbed up there, not realizing that there is no way Junior could of done that at thirteen. At least it is better than assuming he was eaten by a lion conveniently at the bottom of the falls, which he thought at first. Still, both ideas are silly either way. So where is Junior you may ask? Well, he is still on the freaking life raft finishing the challenge his father should be doing with him. Due to being treated like a child by his father the entire day, he really doesn't care all that much about their separation and enjoys the quietness he now has. That is until he reaches the Chill Zone and cannot finish the challenge without his dad being present. If I were Junior, even if my father was being overprotective over me, I'd be kind of worried when he wasn't on the raft at the bottom of Victoria Falls!
After the rafts reach their destination in Zimbabwe's National Park, the next tip is revealed. All the teams must find a white rhino, and somehow take a picture of it without being chased by a wild animal. Some teams are able to pull this off, while others are chased due to trying to use tactics that are normally used for police dogs. The first teams to arrive at the Chill Zone are the Police Cadets and the Surfer Dudes, who will have a major role later in this season. (I'm not revealing anything about that role just yet! It is way too early!)
As the teams arrive at the Chill Zone, the Ice Dancers try to catch up while Dwayne goes searching throughout freaking West Africa to find his son. Maybe the writers should have titled this episode "Finding Junior" or "Are You Smarter Than The Ice Dancers?". Right when it seems the Ice Dancers will get the tenth place position, they are beat by a white rhino which Dwayne got stuck onto in fear. This saves the Father and Son team from losing the challenge and knocks the Ice Dancers into last place. (Time to get the party drinks, people. It looks like the Ice Dancers are about to be eliminated.) However, it was a non-elimination round and they are going to stay in the game. At least anyone that hates the team can watch them get beat up by a white rhino afterwards, which they offended while trying to get to the Chill Zone.
Positive Aspects: Despite me stating various times throughout the summary about the stupidity of certain characters, in truth, I find this episode to be quite good. It was surprisingly extremely well written, and was able to balance tons of hilarious humor the show is known for. The main reason for this are the sub-plots, two of the best being with the "Finding Junior" adventure and the Ice Dancer's going all the way to Hawaii to reverse a possible lava rock curse.
Starting off with the first sub-plot, belonging to the Father and Son team, its greatest strengths were with minor character development and great amounts of well written humor. In the beginning of this plot, Dwayne was being way too overprotective of his son, Junior, despite the boy being thirteen. Junior doesn't like the overbearing nature of his father, and is annoyed by him throughout half of the episode. The climax of this annoyance comes when Dwayne puts way too many life jackets on Junior, in order to protect him from their descent down Victoria Falls. The fall causes Dwayne to be separated from Junior, and go on a wild goose chase to find his son, still thinking he is defenseless. Junior meanwhile is safe on the raft and is able to get to the Chill Zone without his father's presence. At first, Junior enjoys the freedom he now has, but slowly starts to worry about the safety of his father, who is not at the Chill Zone once he gets there. He may feel his father is overbearing at times, but he still loves him, which Junior realizes right at that moment. After going through unnecessary pain to find his son, Dwayne realizes his son can take care of himself once he finds him safe at the Chill Zone. Although the character development is minor, it still exists between the two characters. Junior now is happy with his father being around him, and Dwayne realizes Junior is a young adult and in the future gives him more freedom. The journey to this character development was both rewarding and highlighted the well known humor of the Ridonculous Race.
The Ice Dancer's plot meanwhile strives from a more over-the-top humor aspect. Just from the thought of losing due to a possible lava rock curse, Josses and Jacques barely lose the race to reverse it. They unnecessarily fly to Hawaii to spend a mere ten minutes performing a "special ceremony" on the beach to reverse the curse, and then possibly spend huge amounts of money to go to Zimbabwe for the challenge. On their travels to the Chill Zone, they barely run over Dwayne, almost fall to their deaths down Victoria Falls, and get beat up by the native white rhino. When they think they have lost the challenge, the two overachievers start a whole sappy speech right before their "depart", only to find out they are safe. Man, do the writers know how to make these two characters hilarious at times.
Both the plots and the humor make this episode a must watch for any Total Drama fan, even if it does not achieve much in furthering the competition.
Negative Aspects: I don't know why, but the Rocker's plot in this episode kind of bothered me. The reason for this, I think, is due to the unnecessary focus on Spud "suddenly" having an improved reaction time. Even though it made for some good humor, it is kind of too crazy to buy. Besides that, the plot becomes pointless once Spud "returns to normal" at the end of the challenge, when the team ends up in ninth place and Spud is too clueless to notice this at first.
