"Lord of the Ring Toss" Episode Review
Episode Summary: Did you expect a continuation on the Nemma relationship plot, considering much of the previous episode, "Little Bull on the Prairie", focused heavily on the speed bump the couple faced? You know, the speed bump which involved Noah basically being comatose for most of the episode until Emma decided they could still date, but after the competition. Well screw the development of that plot! In this episode, we'll be focusing instead on immature fighting, mind manipulation, and the fourth stage of break up. All interesting subjects that are ten times better than anything the Nemma plot line could deliver at this point. (Oh, bite me!)
In this episode of the Ridonculous Race, the remaining eight teams all take four separate small planes to the Arctic Circle. There, the teams must play ring toss by getting a ring onto a narwhal's horn and use a snow mobile to get to the next challenge. That is, if they aren't boomeranged back to the first challenge. The boomerangs are back for a single team, who can hopefully use them non-idiotically and get an advantage in the challenge. If they avoid the boomerang, teams must move on to the second part of the challenge, which is building an igloo. When that is done, they must race to the finish in the freezing cold weather, and hopefully reach the Chill Zone first.
It seems in this episode that for some reason, the writers want to focus on the Haters for once. You know, the team that basically fights entire episodes over nonsense like immature children. Yep, they are one of the main focuses here. After Ryan easily secures victory for the team in the first part of the challenge, for some reason Stephanie thinks he was holding them up in the race. So she does the mature thing and uses the boomerang they happen to have on themselves, making them have to repeat the challenge all over again. Only this time, Stephanie has to throw the rings to the narwhal, but unlike Ryan she has a terrible throw. In what seems to be centuries, she finally is able to get the ring on the narwhal's horn, but it is too late to save the team from not ranking low in this part of the race. The Haters end up finishing last thanks to Stephanie's selfishness, and are sent... right on to the next challenge. However, it seems the two of them are starting to realize their fighting is fruitless and is most likely caused by the race. That is until Stephanie blames Ryan for the last place finish, letting their cycle of fighting continue. Oh boy...
Devin has reached the fourth stage of break-up which is rock bottom. Not much really happens to the Best Friends with Devin in this state, unless you count the potential alliance they almost scored with the Goths. By being in an uncaring mood, the Goths are kind of attracted to Devin and consider the alliance for a little bit, until they realize it could never work with peppy Carrie. Then, nothing else happens from there for both teams. Yea.
The Ice Dancers decide in this episode that messing with the Police Cadets isn't enough to stay in this competition, and decide on messing with a different team instead. They choose the Surfer Dudes, who are kind of on a rocky road thanks to Geoff poor throwing skills. Using mind manipulation, Josse makes Geoff think Brody is disappointed in his performance, actually breaking down the usually spirited character quite a bit. It seemingly gets worse when Josse continues to plant false information into Geoff's head about Brody doubting him, causing him to mess up the challenge quite a bit for the team. It seems the mind tricks have worked, only for them to do something other than botch the challenge. Turns out these negative aspects were talked about by both team members, causing them to realize they aren't perfect and strengthening the friendship. This allows the Surfer Dudes to actually get into first place, and the Ice Dancers to get into second place. Now you can start clapping and cheering over the fact the Ice Dancers can't mess with at least one team. I sure am.
Positive Aspects: Before I state anything positive in this episode, let me say that by far "Lord of the Ring Toss" is my least favorite Ridonculous Race episode. I don't hate it, but this episode could make at least the number ten spot on a list for the worst Total Drama episodes. I'll explain later why, but just know I really do not like this episode.
If there is anything salvageable from this episode, it is the fact that at long last the Ice Dancers' plan didn't work. Their plan to destroy the Surfer Dudes through mind manipulation only caused both members of the team to better know their strengths and weaknesses, and win the challenge because of that. Also, they figured out that the Ice Dancers were messing with them after the challenge was finished, without at least getting a last place position like the Police Cadets. It could be foreshadowing that the Surfer Dudes might be the one thing the Ice Dancers can't mess with, thus costing the Ice Dancers the race in some embarrassing way. If it is, the writers implemented it very cleverly, in a way few people could catch. I know the truth behind this statement, but I'm not about to reveal anything. You will just have to wait and see if this statement is correct.
Negative Aspects: The big reason that "Lord of the Ring Toss" is my least favorite Ridonculous Race episode is due to how pointless and lazy the entire product seems to be. There really isn't a lot to talk about here at all, as the writers did a poor job representing every team in the competition. Sure, there was a lot of focus on a few teams, but it was extremely unbalanced and could have been forgotten in five minutes. Also, the writing is kind of under the usual quality of this show, using jokes and plot lines that really would be welcome in a show for a younger audience. There is nothing here that tweens or even older teens like me could get out of this besides killing twenty two minutes. At best this episode is filler, but at worst it is kind of boring.
However, it is still quite watchable. It isn't going to make you get offended or quit the series. Instead, you'll just feel you are staying committed to the series and look forward to the next episode. Trust me when I say you'll forget this episode existed in a few short minutes after watching it.
