"Down and Outback" Episode Review

Note: When I reviewed this episode the first time, I had been sick with a bad cold, which clouded my judgement. Also, I was going through a few personal things at the time and writing the bad review was a way of releasing some rage I had towards them. I realized this after I re-watched the episode today due to being a little cloudy on some of the developing plot lines of the series, and I thought the episode wasn't half bad. Sure it still isn't perfect, but it definitely isn't D+ worthy. I'm sorry for writing such a pointless piece of garbage!

Episode Summary: After redeeming themselves from that horrible Total Drama: World Tour episode over three years ago, the writers decided to make another episode in Australia. Instead of locking the contestants in Melbourne prison again for plot recycling though, the producers send them to an average cabbage farm. For this challenge, the contestants must capture the vermin of Australia; cute little rabbits. Yeah, turns out Australian farmers see bunnies the same way Americans see rats. I wonder what they think of puppies and kittens now. Ten bunnies must be put into huge tan sacks and given to the owner of the farm in order to move on to the next portion of the challenge. Well, I hope the farmer is even in a good mood to allow the contestants to move on to the next portion of the challenge, as their reckless hunting of the bunnies has tramped every last crop he owns. (I guess the contestants were the real vermin of Australia.)

Devin is still hurting from his break-up from Shelly, via international cell phone. Carrie is of course concerned for his well being, but at the same time is celebrating the fact Shelly is out of his life. Hey, Shelly was a jerk anyway, so I don't feel sorry for her at all. Besides, she cheated on Devin with her freaking tennis instructor, which is reason enough to hate her. However, it seems Carrie is going to have a problem trying to admit her feelings to him, as he is in complete denial of the horrible breakup by cell phone. So Carrie asks the smartest contestant on the show for advice; Spud. Yeah, awesome choice Carrie, considering his IQ is probably around -20. Surprisingly, she is able to get some advice from Spud, after having to subject herself to a really long song on the seven stages of breakup, which includes the most pointless guitar solo in history. Right now, Devin is in the well-known first stage, which is denial. In order to up her chances with Devin, Carrie must send him into the second stage; anger. She does this at the best time possible, when Devin is controlling a glider in the second part of the challenge. It ends up working, but they barely both fall to their deaths due to Devin's sudden burst of rage. Well that is something Carrie will never try again.

The Ice Dancers, despite almost bumping the Police Cadets out of the competition last episode, still want to mess with them due to being designated villains. So Josse borrows some of the Goths white make-up and covers an innocent gray bunny with it. The reason for this is that anyone that finds the sole albino bunny on the farm can just skip right on to the next part of the challenge. MacArthur falls for the trick and recklessly chases the bunny from a tractor until both of them fall into a nearby lake. Not being done with their games, the Ice Dancers then trick Brody into thinking MacArthur was drowning in the lake. For those who don't know, there is a little side plot in the season where Brody develops a one-sided crush on MacArthur. With both the Surfer Dudes heading to the lake to save MacArthur (Geoff didn't want to leave Brody alone), the Ice Dancers steal the ten bunnies they captured. Sadly, this gets them into the lead, which stays when they enter the Chill Zone to finish the challenge. However, both teams realize the trick and MacArthur is able to secure twenty rabbits in five seconds by creating armor made out of carrots. So the score between the two rivals are Ice Dancers 2, Police Cadets 1.

On the more minor plot lines of this episode, craziness as usual unfolds for many of the competitors.  It turns out Ennui is an animal magnet, and easily attracts ten bunnies for his team.  However, he is deeply annoyed by this at first, due to bunnies being a known symbol of adorableness.  These feelings change though once it sinks into him that bunnies are the vermin of Australia, and ends up adopting a lone jet black bunny now named Loki.  The Stepbrothers act like complete idiots as they chase a Kangaroo and its Joey due to thinking they are albino rabbits.  This doesn't really matter in the end, as they end up finding the real albino rabbit anyway, which they proudly mistake for a maggot.  The Rockers actually don't look too bad this challenge, as they score ten rabbits very quickly due to Spud of all people realizing a snake had swallowed a whole bunch of them.  Finally, the Haters bond a little over rabbit hunting, only to fight again once it is done.  Hey, a little progress for their relationship is better than nothing.

Once all the teams collect their bunnies, they move on to the next part of the challenge.  Teams must use gliders in order to get into nearby New Zealand and head to the Chill Zone right past a valley of mountains.  As expected, most teams end up crashing and somehow surviving the ordeal, especially the Rockers and the Stepbrothers.  The same two teams end up tying for last, with Don having to decide which team should stay.  Due to re-watching footage of the tied finish, it is determined that the Stepbrothers are to be sent home.  However, the Rockers are to be sent home too, due to this challenge having a double elimination.  Don forgot to realize that fact when the two teams finished and wasted so much time idiotically to determine a fact that could've been solved in five seconds.  Despite the idiocy from Don, the right verdict was given and both teams were sent home.  Now stay tuned for the next episode where Don mistakes a non-elimination round for an actual elimination.

Positive Aspects:  The basic concept of the episode, "saving" a cabbage farm from a rabbit infestation, helped to allow for tons of screen time with many of the other teams.  Although not all the teams were fully represented, (The Sisters and The Reality TV Pros for example), more was able to be done here plot wise.  While the extra screen time was used on some of the more represented teams such as the Best Friends, it was also used for teams needing more screen time such as the Goths.  Almost all of these plot lines were well balanced, and quite enjoyable to watch.  Additionally, some of these plots allowed for some character development.

Although Carrie is still struggling to be able to admit her feelings to Devin due to him going through the seven stages of heartbreak, some headway was made towards these two maybe one day becoming a couple.  With Shelly breaking up with Devin the last episode, Carrie now has a great opportunity to bond with him more by being there during his heartache.  Though she was kind of pushing things by rushing him into the second stage, it still is progress for this hopefully future couple.

The rivalry between the Police Cadets and the Ice Dancers has gotten worse, with the Ice Dancers this episode messing with the former team by fooling them into thinking they found the albino rabbit.  Not only are the Ice Dancers clearly showing development into the main villains of this season, but they are also starting to lose focus on just winning the game like they originally wanted.   You could argue that Jacques is at least realizing what they are doing is kind of extreme, due to a confessional scene the team had earlier in the episode, but he still was involved with what happened.  This team is adopting the roles Heather had back on Total Drama Island; scheme others and win the game.

The inclusion of the Goths' new pet bunny Loki after the events of this episode has helped the team become even more likable and complex.  Ennui taking in the fact that he is an animal magnet by adopting the rabbit, despite his excuse rabbits are vermin of Australia, shows that deep down he has a good heart.  It isn't much, but the team now has some true diversity between the two characters.  Ennui is the nicer animal lover, while Crimson is the colder loner and the smarter of the two.  No longer are these characters just a pair of cliche goths.  Instead, they are pretty well fleshed characters.

The Haters seemed to have bonded in this episode through the first part of the challenge, and are starting to fight a little less.  By hunting for the rabbits, they were able to be distracted from fighting and for a second realize their fighting was pointless.  It isn't really much, but in a later episode, I would not be surprised if they made up.

Additionally, the humor was on key as usual, which is really no surprise.  This spin-off of Total Drama is really great with comedy, which has been a problem the original series had starting with Total Drama: All-Stars.  Also, the geography of both Australia and New Zealand was perfectly on key, with subtle knowledge of each region being sneaked in.

Negative Aspects:  As much as this episode was enjoyable, there are two major problems stopping this episode from getting an A.  These two problems are the Stepbrothers' plot line and the double elimination.

The Stepbrothers' plot line, unlike the others in this episode, was completely pointless and stupid. It makes really no sense character wise that both characters would believe a Kangaroo was an albino rabbit, and chase it half the episode. Sure, both characters are goofy, especially Chet, but they aren't idiots. Other people may disagree with me, but I really think this plot line needed to be revised or better cut out for the episode.

However, I think it is safe to say the build-up towards the double elimination of the Stepbrothers and the Rockers was pretty sloppy.  I get the fact that the writers were trying to surprise the audience with it, but there wasn't any build-up towards the point.  Besides that, the surprise came out of the blue, making the whole thing seem like a last minute idea.  In my opinion, this ending taints some better parts of the episode, which would have given this simple episode an A.  Instead, all the twist did was make this an average episode at best.
