"Ca-noodling" Episode Review
(Note: I apologize to the writers of the show for a certain comment I said at the end of the episode summary. I was really just joking around and I still think the show's writers are great at what they do.)
Episode Summary: In a "turn of events" the next challenge for the show is a literal heroes vs. villains challenge. Two teams of three are formed for this challenge, where they all must go noodling (hand fishing) for catfish on Vietnam's very own Mekong River. The first team to catch six catfish will have to move on to the second part of the challenge, which involves having to navigate their way out of a bunch of dangerous wartime tunnels. However, the second challenge can be entirely skipped if a fish with the Ridonculous Race logo is captured, allowing a whole team to make it back to the Chill Zone first. Okay, episode summary over. Now can I get my nap? Wait, there is more to this episode besides what I just described? Okay then, what "complex" story arcs took place in this cliche episode?
In order to get the temporarily alliance to work out between the Cadets, the Ice Dancers, and the Haters, Sanders has no choice but to put her foot down and take authority. She fears the other team, which consists of the Best Friends, the Surfer Dudes, and the Sisters, will beat them to the Chill Zone due to their strong co-operating. Surprisingly enough, Sander's team listens, and they immediately co-operate in what must be one of the most well written scenes of the series. The Ice Dancers and the Police Cadets surprisingly make peace during this time of co-operation, and will no longer be rivals. The Haters make up in a surprisingly heartfelt moment, with the entire team clapping as they kiss for the first time in weeks. It is a beautiful story of a villainous team working together and turning into better people because of their hard work. These kinds of plots are what make me love to review this show, and I'm proud to have explored 3/4 of the season so far. Creators of the Ridonculous Race, keep it coming. Also, if you believed a word that I just said besides the alliance being formed, joke is on you.
Instead, the most this Axis of Evil does is have McArthur and Josse temporarily hold back the other team by tricking the kind of blind Devin (I'll explain later) that a crocodile near some rocks is a really huge catfish. Predictably, the crocodile eats Devin's team's catfish and it looks they are about to lose the challenge. However, this problem becomes a pointless distraction after Brody is somehow able to give the crocodile the Helmlich maneuver in order to retrieve the catfish and the team gets in the lead anyway. That also becomes pointless though when Jacque is able to capture the special catfish, giving the entire Axis of Evil the win. Yeah, there isn't a lot happening here, is there?
Well, there is the the dangerous travel inside the Vietnamese wartime tunnels, which almost makes Devin admit his feelings to Carrie. However, the combination of being blind from the previous challenge's peppers for most of the day, being full of sweat, and Ryan talking to Carrie with his shirt off, this never happens. Yeah, the show has gone that low to make us think Carrie and Ryan will most definitely end up together. Also, the Surfer Dudes are eliminated just for the good deed of letting the Best Friends go ahead of them but are in good spirits as they leave. Okay looks like nothing important happened today... Wait! The Surfer Dudes got freaking eliminated for being helpful. Screw you writers! Thanks for botching my theory of them making it far in the competition! Oh, the agony! (Cries in corner at the atrocity this episode is, as well as the fact the Surfer Dudes got eliminated.)
Positive Aspects: All I can say for this part of the episode review is at least it is watchable. Oh god, this episode is horrible.
Negative Aspects: I REALLY hate this episode. Not only is it boring as heck, but nothing happens besides the Devin and Carrie sub-plot. Even with the sub-plot giving this episode some great moments, it is cliche as heck. One, I have no doubt that Devin and Carrie are going to still get together, as well as the Haters. Two, love triangles have already been done on this show, and way better than this. Yeah, I'm admitting that I actually liked the love triangle Duncan had with Courtney and Gwen. It wasn't perfect, but it was well developed and definitely created some great conflict for Total Drama: World Tour. Three, Carrie and Ryan are just freaking friends. There is no way they will get together, so nice try show.
The whole plot is a villains vs. heroes plot done wrong, which is a cliche idea to begin with. Also, if I remember correctly, wasn't this type of plot-line done for an entire season once? Remember Total Drama: All-Stars, where there was a freaking heroes and villains' team, which at times could really make the notorious season pretty entertaining? If you didn't, then you now know another reason why this episode is terrible. Quite honestly, I kind of would like to see someone else review this, just to see their reaction to this train wreck of an episode. It is a special kind of bad, which you have to see to believe.
Now you are probably asking why I didn't give this episode an F instead of a D. Well, as I said, it is watchable. An F would mean I stopped the episode halfway through or was in a state of disbelief after watching it. This has only happened once to me, and it wasn't with any episode of this show. A D is still labels the episode as bad, but not worth ditching the entire season for one misguided episode. All shows have at least one of these, with Breaking Bad for example having "The Fly" as its misdirected and cliche episodes. I still hate this episode for existing, but I now know at least this show can mess up once in a while. I'm a hundred percent sure there will not be another episode like this in the future, and by tomorrow this episode will be nothing but a bad dream.
