"Bjorken Telephone" Episode Review
Episode Summary: Due to the dullness of the last episode, the writers for once realize their mistakes and finally attempted to make a good episode of Total Drama. Sure, they screwed up on the fact that Iceland is not completely covered in ice all of the time, but its progress from the last episode.
In a nice change of pacing, the challenge starts off right away in the Chill Zone in Iceland. The remaining fifteen teams must race to an area of "dangerous" active water geysers and tell a local citizen in Icelandic to give them the next tip as well as access to the first plane to the next destination. Some teams, especially the Goths (who are really into Icelandic music) breeze through the challenge, while other teams get stuck in geysers or absolutely get the translated words wrong. Those losers are none other than the Reality TV Pros, whom keep getting trapped in the geysers, and the Father and Son team, who get the translation wrong again and again (the person at fault here was Dwayne). Also, do not get the translation absolutely wrong, or you will find yourself in a world of pain from the locals! Dwayne learned that the hard way when he accidentally said something insulting in Icelandic to the local.
After the first six teams to finish that portion of the challenge board the plane, they are sent to their next destination. Here, teams are given the second Either/Or of the season; mine for fossils in an ice covered cave or eat what must be the most disgusting Thanksgiving dinner I've ever seen. (Sheep's eyeballs anyone?) After losing their fossil in a freak accident, the Vegans are forced to eat the meat based dinner in order to try to avoid elimination. (Well, I guess the Omnivores now, considering they have now eaten meat.) However, they end up going in last and are sent packing, for their trip to Brazil with the other teams. Yep, turns out the whole challenge was a non-elimination one, and the Vegans had eaten meat for nothing. This obviously gets them pissed off and Miles takes her rage off on Don, ending the episode on a strangely hilarious moment.
Positive Aspects: Although the geography of Iceland may or may not be wrong, the episode was definitely much better than the last one. It was clear from the beginning that this wasn't going to be a filler episode like "Mediterranean Homesick Blues". Instead, the episode ended up being super fun and full of various hilarious moments. You know, the things I'd expect on a comedy based show like the Ridonculous Race.
Additionally, this episode has very well written character development for some of the characters. It may not be very noticeable at first, but after a few re-watches it starts to become more visible. For one, one would notice Kelly starting to notice the bossy and rude behavior of her daughter Taylor. Throughout the episode, there are moments where it is subtly hinted Kelly is questioning Taylor's behavior. For example, during the first part of the challenge, Kelly looks miserable after being "forced" by her own daughter to keep trying to get the translation right by having to re-cross the geyser field again and again. If that isn't a hint that some type of climax is coming for this team's relationship, than I am looking too deep into things and really should just accept that this show is mainly a comedy. Also, Stephanie has started to show some flaws in her personality, which may end up ruining her relationship with Ryan. In some parts of the episode, especially the first portion of the challenge, Stephanie can be seen as kind of bossy to Ryan and a complete overachiever. I know it was over French fries, but man can she have a terrible temper.
We even got a pretty good subplot with the Father and Son team, this time over "shockingly" enough, Dwayne embarrassing his son and trying to make up for whatever fault he did. This time, it is failing to get the translated words right and accidentally insulting a local by saying something different instead. (I really think it was some type of curse.) The subplot isn't anything special, and ends as you would expect with Dwayne further embarrassing himself, but I admit it was darn funny.
Sometimes, just having a fun experience watching an episode of one of your favorite shows is enough to satisfy yourself. The same can go for this hilarious episode of the Ridonculous Race. It wasn't anything special, but it was super fun to watch.
Negative Aspects: However, I do have a few minor problems with the episode, which is the reason it earned its B+ grade. First off, as I've said a million times already in this review, the geography of Iceland was off. Strangely enough, Iceland is actually free of ice for the most part and is full of green grassy fields. Greenland ironically enough has way more ice than Iceland. Second, there are a few bad jokes here and there, like in most comedy shows. Finally, the gross out throw up scenes were pretty unnecessary and the episode would've been better off without them.
