A Thousand Years

The day we met,
Frozen I held my breath
Right from the start
I knew that I'd found a home for my heart
Heather rolled the silver engagement ring around her left finger. Her heart pounded in her ears. She took a look at her flushed appearance in the mirror, taking deep breaths to calm herself. She couldn't believe this was finally happening. After four years, it was finally happening.
"I can't decide if you'd look better with smoky eyes or just a natural pink look," Courtney sauntered out of the bathroom.
Heather smiled. "Either is fine."
Courtney looked at Heather and sighed. "Oh my god, you look so pretty. I knew that wedding dress would look perfect on you the moment you tried it on!"
Heather studied the lacy floral patterns on the long sleeves of the dress. The hollow to the floor was embroidered with tiny silver sequins, and she wore a silver necklace to fill in the space above the sweetheart neckline.
"Hmm, I think I'll go with the smoky. It looks better with all that silver, although the pink fits perfectly with your skin tone," Courtney said.
"Ok," Heather nodded. She studied herself from all angles in the mirror. She wondered if Alejandro would even like her dress. It seemed like a silly worry, and Heather was never one to worry about what other people thought, but she'd go to the ends of the earth to make Alejandro happy.
"Ok, Heather, come to the bathroom!" Courtney chimed. "I have all your makeup ready!" Heather looked one last time before walking into the bathroom.
Beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave?
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone?
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
The moment Heather saw Alejandro at the end of the aisle, her whole world stopped. It was like he was the only person in the room. His black tux stood out from all the groomsmen and bridesmaids' outfits, and his emerald eyes shone like diamonds. Seeing him standing there made her feel calmer and more at home. All her fears flew out the window.
One step closer
With every step, Heather became more excited. She wished she could run and jump into his arms and not have to go through the rest of the wedding ceremony.
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Heather stepped up to the altar, never taking her eyes off his. The ring-bearer brought two golden wedding bands out on a pillow. Heather's had an oval-cut diamond in the middle, and Alejandro's was plain.
Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
As they exchanged the rings, Alejandro nearly missed his. He couldn't keep his eyes off Heather. She always looked beautiful to him, even through matted hair and smeared makeup. But seeing his bride glow like this made him euphoric.
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this
Alejandro couldn't believe it. He had the honor of calling Heather his for the rest of his life and the honor of being fully, truly hers. There were 8 billion people on earth, and he met Heather. The odds of that happening were astounding to him, and the odds of marrying her were even greater. But here he was, reciting his vows as he gazed into her silver-grey eyes- the ones that never failed to take his breath away.
One step closer
As Heather said her vows, Alejandro focused on the way her lips parted and met again with every word. The sound of her voice was as sweet as honey. His lips ached for contact with hers. Alejandro rested his forehead against Heather's while she neared the end of her speech.
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride," the preacher spoke.
Heather held her breath. She was almost too overwhelmed to kiss him. Their entire relationship flashed before her eyes- Everything they've been through together for the last three years came to this very moment. A lump of butterflies formed in her throat.
Alejandro slowly leaned in, cupping her face. He wanted to savor this moment for as long as he could. This was something he would remember for the rest of his life and even after life. Love and joy ignited within him, and the feeling was too intense to understand.
Heather pressed her lips to his. Alejandro kissed her back. Heather held both sides of his face and deepened the kiss. Alejandro's familiarity with her lips and muscle memory of their rhythm allowed him to keep up. The sound of the couple's synced heartbeats drowned out the audience's claps and cheers.
And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Two people were strangers,
and now they are one.
