Episode 13: Serving Big Plays- Immunity Challenge
"Welcome back to Total Drama Island: Return to Wawanakwa!" Chris welcomed as the main camera panned on him, "Before the break, the campers were informed of their next challenge: a badminton accuracy tournament, where everyone leaves with some sort of 'prize'. Let's get down to it."
--------
"Let's begin round one!" Chris declared, "Veronica, you're up first!"
Veronica stepped up to the serving plate as she prepared to hit the birdie. In general, Veronica was a pretty athletic person, although badminton wasn't a sport that she focused on. However, when the birdie was shot at her, she managed to hit it almost perfectly, allowing it to sail up and into the net in the center of the box.
"And Veronica sets the bar high with a score of 50!" Chris announced, causing everyone to cheer for her.
"Yeah!" Veronica exclaimed, proud of her performance.
"This might be a good one for me."- Veronica
"This might be more difficult than I thought..."- Tory
"Kiana, you're up next," Chris declared.
It wouldn't be wrong to say that Kiana was unconfident. Especially after Veronica had set the bar impossibly high, she felt an extreme amount of pressure to perform to that standard. When the birdie was shot at her, she did manage to hit it, and it was projected to head for the 50-point net, but it ended up heading slightly to the left, resulting in a much lower score.
"And Kiana gets 3 points," Chris announced, resulting in a lesser amount of applause.
"Aw man..." Kiana muttered, upset.
"I don't play a lot of sports, so I didn't expect to do that well."- Kiana
"It may be cruel to say, but I don't have to worry about her beating me in this challenge."- Katelyn
"Amalia is up next!" Chris declared.
Back home, Amalia spent a fair amount of time working out to keep herself in shape. Badminton was a sport that she played pretty frequently, so she was pretty confident in her chances of winning. Her confidence was justified when she managed to hit the birdie into a high-numbered slot, albeit one off-center.
"Amalia scores twenty-one points!" Chris announced, resulting in some applause.
"I'm liking my chances. I'd love to get back-to-back immunity wins."- Amalia
"Hmm...maybe Amalia can win this for us."- Matthew
"Tory is up next!" Tory declared.
Tory felt an extreme amount of pressure; he knew that out of everyone in the all-male alliance, he was the most capable of winning the challenge. Thus, he felt the need to score high to instill confidence in his alliance. When he hit the birdie, he was lucky enough to have it fly into a box with a decent score.
"Tory scores 14 points!" Chris announced, allowing Tory to cheer for himself.
"Not good, but at least I'm safe."- Tory
"Matthew is up next," Chris declared.
Unlike the others, Matthew was a part of his highschool's badminton team. If there was a challenge for him to win, this was the one. Calling upon all of his skills, he slammed the birdie with the sweet spot of his racket, allowing it to fly high and land in a good square.
"And Matthew scores 22 Points! " Chris announced as the campers clapped for him.
"Wow. Matthew actually did well. I'm kinda scared." *chuckles*- Katelyn
"Maybe I can pull out a win."- Matthew
"Rhythm is next to swing!" Chris declared.
As usual, Rhythm was eager to win the challenge. However, it was more of an attempt to prevent Katelyn from winning immunity as opposed to having herself win immunity. Without hesitation, she slapped the birdie as it came within four feet of her, sending it far, and managing to land it in a square equidistant from the edge of the box and the central net.
"Rhythm scores a modest 10 points!" Chris announced, resulting in a modest amount of applause from her fellow campers.
"Eh, at least I'm still in the challenge."- Rhythm
"Daniel is up next," Chris declared.
With Daniel's ethnicity, one would normally assume that he would be skilled at badminton. However, with his extreme dedication to keeping his mental state in shape, he wasn't able to fully dedicate himself to conventional sports. Luckily for him, he managed to hit his birdie accurately enough to land it in a higher-scoring square.
"Daniel picks up a spectacular 22 points!" Chris announces.
"Looks like Daniel is also a good physical competitor. Hmm...maybe I'll have to pull the trigger on a blindside sooner rather than later."- Veronica
"I've tried to lay low on the physical competitions, but with the possibility of a blindside looming, it might be best for me to try and win."- Daniel
"Katelyn is up next!" Chris declared.
Katelyn's best asset for this kind of challenge was her frustration. Days of being on the bottom and not having much control built up a sense of aggression in her, which she wanted to release turning this challenge. Channeling her anger, she hit the birdie as hard as she could, and ended up with moderate results.
"Katelyn scores 17 points," Chris declared as Katelyn walked back to her seat.
"And no clapping. Figures..."- Katelyn
"Devin is the last one for the round," Chris declared, "Devin, if you can get a score higher than 3, Kiana will be eliminated from the challenge.
It was at this moment when Devin wanted to prove himself to the other campers. He wanted to show that he came here to compete. Once he saw the birdie coming towards him, he swung his racket with all his might, hoping to send the birdie flying deep. However, what he failed to notice was that he aimed his racket too high, so when he swung it, he completely whiffed the birdie.
"Devin, you completely missed!" Chris announced, much to everyone's laughter, "That means that you are out! Please head over to the table and claim your 9th place prize."
Disappointed, Devin walked over to the table and opened his 9th place trophy, subsequently allowing him to pull out his prize: the Golden Marshmallow necklace. After a few seconds of cheering, Chris reminded him that someone could easily steal it later, prompting Devin to sit down silently on the losers' bench.
"Time to start round two!" Chris declared, "Rhythm is up first!"
With the pressure of being the first one out having faded away, everyone played a little more loosely. Rhythm set the bar at a moderate height with a score of 14, followed by Tory raising it slightly with a score of fifteen, and Amalia raising it significantly with a score of twenty-one.
"Kiana you're up now," Chris declared.
"C'mon..." Kiana muttered to herself as she smacked her birdie, landing it close to the 50-point net, but fell short once again.
"That's 3 points, again!" Chris announced.
"I guess badminton isn't my thing..."- Kiana
After that, the scores returned to being pleasant: Katelyn scored a decent 14 points, Matthew managed to improve on his previous score, scoring 24 points, while Daniel put up a moderate score, scoring 18 points.
"That leaves Veronica," Chris remarked, "Veronica, if you can score better than a 3, Kiana will be eliminated."
With the memory of Devin's attempt fresh in her mind, Veronica kept her composure and reminded herself to look where she was swinging. Using the same technique as before, Veronica hit the birdie perfectly, allowing it to land in the 50-point net.
"And Veronica gets another 50 points!" Chris announced, "That means that Kiana is out! Please come and get your 8th place trophy."
Kiana wasn't really upset; she knew that she wasn't going to last long in that challenge. Feeling hopeful, she walked over to the trophy table, grabbed her trophy, and opened it, in which she saw a coloured card with text on it. After pulling it out and looking at it, she immediately began crying.
"Oh no..." Veronica muttered.
"This isn't good," Daniel noted.
"Chris said that we could get a prize or a punishment. I guess Kiana got the first punishment. I hope it's not too bad..."- Katelyn
"What's wrong, Kiana?" Devin asked out of courtesy, "I'm sure it's not that bad..."
"I know; these are tears of joy!" Kiana claimed as she showed everyone the card, "I won a phone call from home!"
At that moment, everyone began cheering; after spending four weeks away from home, everyone certainly missed their family and friends. This prize was a hot commodity in this camp, and everyone wanted a little taste of home. Kiana was the lucky one to get her hands on it.
"Kiana, are you going to keep your phone call? Or trade it for the Golden Marshmallow necklace?" Chris asked.
"I'm keeping it!" Kiana exclaimed as she ran to sit down, still crying happily.
"This is the best prize that I could've ever gotten...; I really hope that no one steals this from me. It would break my heart..."- Kiana
"Let's begin round three!"Chris declared, "Veronica, you're up first."
The third round was no less intense than the second one. Everyone was trying harder to get high scores, and the results showed that. In general, the scores were above par: Veronica scored 22 points, Daniel scored 17 points, Amalia scored 18 points, Tory scored 16 points, and Rhythm scored 22 points. The only straggler was Matthew, who scored 11 points after a bad blow of the wind took his birdie off course.
"Katelyn is last up!" Chris declared, "If you can get more than 11 points, Matthew will be eliminated."
"She better miss: we already lost Devin, and if Matthew is eliminated, only Daniel & I are left to beat Veronica. And our odds aren't that good."- Tory
"It's 11 points; how difficult could it be?"- Katelyn
Confident in her abilities, Katelyn swung her racket as she had done in her previous two attempts. She watched carefully as the birdie sailed in an arc, and came down on the edge of the 50-point net. Per her luck, the birdie bounced off the edge and landed in another box; one with a lesser point value.
"And Katelyn scores 10 points!" Chris announced as Katelyn cursed to herself, "That means she's out! Katelyn, please come to the table to get your 7th place trophy."
"And...I'm back to being fate's toilet."- Katelyn
"Perfect. Now that Katelyn is out, all we have are alliance members left in the challenge. Now, it's time to have some fun!"- Rhythm
"Hmm..." Katelyn muttered as she pulled a card out of her trophy, "An Italian vacation..."
"Lucky!" Veronica exclaimed.
"I'm gonna trade this for the Golden Marshmallow necklace," Katelyn declared, forcing Devin to switch prizes with her.
"What?! Why would you pass up the chance to go to Italy?! It's beautiful there!"- Veronica
"A vacation would be nice, but if I can get immunity and somehow make it to the end and win, I can buy a lot of vacations with $1,000,000."- Katelyn
"It's time for round 4!" Chris declared, "Amalia is up first!"
Without the pressure of the minority alliance winning immunity, this challenge became a fun competition as opposed to a race for immunity. Amalia, wanting to give her all, scored 20 points. Matthew, after nearly missing the birdie, managed to score 19 points. Rhythm didn't fare much better; scoring nine points after missing the 50-point net. Tory, also wanting to try his hardest, managed to get 21 points. Daniel was the worse of them all: after taking an unlucky bounce off the rim of the 50-point net, he ended up scoring 6 points. His fate was sealed when Veronica hit her 3rd 50-point score in four attempts.
"Daniel, you're out!" Chris declared, "Please come over to the trophy table and claim your prize!"
"Damn, we're down another member. The odds are against us, and now it's up to Matthew & I to try and get individual immunity."- Tory
"I got..." Daniel began as he pulled the card out of his 6th place trophy, "Five thousand dollars!"
"Way to go, Daniel!" Amalia cheered as she and her fellow campers clapped for him.
"I'm gonna keep the cash," Daniel declared as he went to sit with Devin, Kiana, and Katelyn.
"He deserves it. After all, he did give up ten grand for me."- Amalia
"It was an easy decision. I know that if I take immunity, someone will take it later, I'm not interested in the Italian vacation, and I'm not gonna take the phone call from Kiana; she deserves that. The cash was the only one left."- Daniel
"Time for round 5!" Chris declared.
This next round was an odd one. To start, Veronica recorded her lowest score so far: fifteen points, opening the door for the others to knock her out. Seeing the window of opportunity to advance in the challenge, Amalia manged to score 19 points, Tory got a respectable 24 points, and Matthew shocked everyone by sinking his birdie in the 50-point net.
"That leaves Rhythm for last," Chris announced, "Rhythm, if you can beat Veronica's score of fifteen, she will be eliminated from the challenge."
"C'mon Rhythm, you can do it!"- Tory
Everyone watched in silence as Rhythm wound up her swing and hit the birdie. As it flew through the air, it seemed as if the birdie was on trajectory to land square in the 50-point net. This assumption left everyone shocked when the birdie bounced off the net and landed in the square below.
"Ooh....that's a bummer," Chris remarked, "Rhythm scores a measly one point. That means you're out."
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"- Tory
"Who's bright idea was it to put the '1' square right below the 50-point net?"- Rhythm
"Hey, I spent hours buildin' that thing; I had to have fun one way or another."- Chef Hatchet
"Oh! This is interesting," Rhythm remarked as she pulled the card from her 5th place trophy, "3D-flatscreen television."
"Not bad..." Matthew admitted.
"Man, I would love a 3D-flatscreen television. That would make my 'Lets Play' sessions soooo much better."- Matthew
"Will you keep the tv, or will you trade it?" Chris asked.
"I'll trade it for the five grand," Rhythm declared, forcing Daniel to swap prizes with her.
"Fine," Daniel agreed reluctantly, yet still smiling.
"My priority is money. I'm not just playing for myself; I'm playing for my family. $5,000 can do a lot for my family."- Rhythm
"Let's start round 6!" Chris declared.
With half of the campers gone from the challenge, there was definitely no room for error. Matthew, having known this, tried harder, but only managed to get 15 points. Luckily for him, Veronica hit her birdie awkwardly and only ended up getting 8 points. Tory, seeing this as on opportunity to knock his target out of the challenge, pushed harder and successfully scored 20 points, leaving Veronica on the cusp of elimination.
"Amalia is last to go!" Chris announced, "Amalia, if you can score more than 8 points, Veronica will be eliminated from the challenge."
"I was afraid of something like this. But in the end, as much as I care for Amalia, I need to win immunity in order to keep my options open."- Veronica
"C'mon Amalia. It's 8 points! How hard can it be to get eight points?!"- Tory
In all fairness, there was an equal chance of getting the numbers from 1 to 25; all that counted was how hard you hit the birdie and in which direction you hit it. For Amalia, she managed to hit the birdie hard enough to soar towards the 50-point net, but aimed too far to the right, leaving it to fall into a lesser-point square.
"And...Amalia gets 7 points..." Chris announced, "Sadly, that means you're eliminated. Please come to the trophy table and get your 4th place trophy."
"Okay, is Veronica secretly Neo from The Matrix? Because she keeps on dodging bullets in this challenge!"- Tory
"I got..." Amalia began as she read the card from her trophy, "A five-star dinner!"
"Tonight, assuming that you aren't voted out, you get to pick one camper to join you for a five-star dinner," Chris explained, "Do I even need to ask what you'll do?"
"Not at all, Chris," Amalia agreed as she walked over to Daniel and shared a kiss with him, "It's time for me to take you on a date."
"Perhaps fate wants Daniel & I together."- Amalia
"Hey, I won't turn down a dinner with the girl that I...really like. It's romantic." *smiles*- Daniel
"It's time for round seven!" Chris declared.
Unbeknownst to most of the campers, it was a 2v1 matchup; Tory & Matthew had the primary goal of preventing Veronica from winning immunity. With that in mind, Matthew went out and managed to hit the birdie as perfectly as he could, successfully scoring 50 points. At that point, it seemed like their plan might actually work. But that thought was quenched when Veronica managed to score 50 points as well.
"F**K!" Tory exclaimed as he watched Veronica's birdie land in the 50-point net.
"And Veronica has scored 50 points as well!" Chris announced, "Tory, to have any shot of staying in this challenge, you must score 50 points."
By now, Tory was furious; after having missed two opportunities to eliminate Veronica, he was left on full tilt as he stepped up to swing. Calling on all of his frustration, he hit the birdie hard, albeit in an weird spot on the racket. Luckily for him, his awkward hit was enough to send his birdie on a flight path heading for the 50-point net. However, much like the fellow eliminated campers, his birdie whiffed, scoring him less points.
"And that is 2 points....which I'm pretty sure is less than 50," Chris remarked, "Please grab your 3.5th trophy."
"3.5th?" Rhythm asked, confused.
"That's why decimal placements don't exist."- Daniel
"I have no clue what could be inside this trophy. We haven't had someone get a punishment yet, so I'm scared that I might get it."- Tory
"A second chance?" Tory questioned as he read the card that was in his trophy.
"Tory, you must choose one of the prizes that have already been awarded," Chris ordered, "But choose carefully, because whoever you take the prize from, will automatically be given a second chance and will return to the challenge to compete for immunity."
That explanation left the campers surprised. None of the eliminated campers expected to compete in the challenge again after being taken out. But now that there was an opportunity to get back in the challenge, they all turned to Tory attentively, hoping for a second shot.
"I don't expect to be given a second chance, but I'd really appreciate it."- Katelyn
"I really hope that Tory makes the right choice. We need someone who can take out Veronica."- Matthew
"There's a bunch of different ways that I can do this. Looking at the six eliminated campers, there are pros and cons to sending each of them back in, but I know who I have to pick."- Tory
"I would like the 3D-flatscreen tv and I'll send Daniel back into the challenge," Tory declared, allowing him and Daniel to switch positions.
"I'm not enthusiastic about playing again, but I know that the guys are counting on me to keep Veronica from winning, so I've got to try my hardest."- Daniel
"I sent Daniel back into the challenge because I know that his agenda is the same as mine; we need to keep Veronica from winning. Hopefully he can pull it off."- Tory
"Let's start round eight!" Chris declared.
With the situation having remained unchanged from the previous round, Matthew went out and hoped to replicate his success from the last round. With a good hit, Matthew managed to score 22 points. Daniel went up next, hoping to prove that Tory made the right choice. Sadly, his luck from his last shot carried over to this one, and he only scored 2 points.
"It's official: I suck at badminton," Daniel joked as he preemptively walked to the losers' bench.
"Should I still go?" Veronica asked as she walked up to the serving plate.
"Go ahead," Daniel insisted as he took a seat next to Amalia.
"And...swing!" Veronica remarked as she watched the birdie go flying into the 50-point net, as if it was programmed to do so.
"No surprise to anyone: Daniel is eliminated from the challenge," Chris commented, "Please go and claim your 3rd place prize."
"What'll it be?" Daniel asked jokingly as he pulled out the card inside the trophy, "Served Spanks?"
"Congratulations, Daniel! You've received the first punishment: for the next 24 hours, every time you hear 'Serve up!' being said from the loudspeakers, you must choose one of your fellow campers to take a badminton racket and slap you on the butt with it!" Chris explained, resulting in a rouse of laughter from the other campers.
"That sucks, dude!" Rhythm commented in between laughs.
"I can trade it though, right?" Daniel asked hopefully.
"Yes," Chris confirmed.
"I'll trade it for the five-star dinner," Daniel declared, resulting in even more laughs.
"What?!" Amalia exclaimed, shocked.
"Hey, there's no downside for you!" Daniel claimed as he switched cards with his girlfriend, "We get to go on another date and you get to experience one of your fantasies, I guess."
*uncontrollable laughter*- Rhythm
*uncontrollable laughter*- Veronica
*uncontrollable laughter*- Devin
"I mean...he does have a point..." *blushing heavily*- Amalia
"Time for the final round!" Chris declared, wanting to get back to the challenge, "It's between Veronica, & Matthew. Veronica, you're up first."
Veronica knew that she dodged a few bullets; she didn't want to get lucky all the way to the end only to go and lose immunity. Keeping her mind in the right zone, she carefully eyed the birdie coming towards her and rebounded it towards the box. Unlike many of her previous swings, she aimed a bit too far left, causing her to get a lesser score.
"Veronica scores 18 points!" Chris announced, "Matthew, to win the challenge, you must score higher than 18 points."
"Eighteen points isn't a bad score, but Matthew is definitely capable of beating me. I'm a little worried."- Veronica
"This is the first time that Matthew has actually done really well in a challenge. I've got a bad feeling that he's trying to plan something..."- Rhythm
"It's do or die. If he doesn't nail this, there's a good chance that Veronica will win immunity and our plan goes down the drain."- Tory
The situation was clear to Matthew; he was the only person left who could take out Veronica. Carrying the weight of his alliance on his back, Matthew put himself into a state of extreme focus. He saw the birdie coming straight for him and effectively shot the birdie towards the box. Like Veronica, he was off-target, landing his birdie in a lesser-scored square.
"Matthew scores...20 points!" Chris reported, "That means that Veronica is out! Please come claim your second place prize!"
"Let's see..." Veronica muttered as she took a look at the card in her trophy, "Disco Dilemma?"
"Also a punishment: for the next 24 hours, every time you hear disco music being played from the loudspeakers, you must dance in a disco fashion until the music stops," Chris explained.
"Not bad," Devin remarked.
"Not as bad as Amalia's punishment," Rhythm noted.
"I don't know; Amalia probably disagrees," Daniel corrected jokingly, causing Amalia to give him a playful slap on the shoulder.
"Do you want immunity?" Veronica asked, whispering to Matthew.
"I'd appreciate it," Matthew answered, "You can take one of the prizes."
"I'll trade it to Devin for the Italian vacation," Veronica declared.
"This might be a big mistake, but hopefully by doing this, I can instill a bit more trust in Matthew. By doing this for him, hopefully he'll be more willing to trust me when I ask him to take out Daniel down the road."- Veronica
"I'm not much of a dancer, so...I'm not lookin' forward to this."- Devin
"And Matthew, that means you get the 1st place trophy and prize!" Chris declared as Matthew went to open his trophy.
"Um...Baywatch-tard?" Matthew questioned as he pulled a red, female's one-piece bathingsuit out of the trophy.
"And for the final punishment, for the next week, you must wear a Baywatch-style swimsuit and carry a Baywatch-style buoy 24 hours a day," Chris revealed, resulting in a rouse of shock from the other campers.
"Well...I'm gonna trade it to Katelyn for the Golden Marshmallow necklace," Matthew declared.
"Yeah...after today, it's clear that I'm not fate's toilet; I'm fate's outhouse after a day at the carnival."- Katelyn
*holds up Golden Marshmallow necklace* "That's right! I did it! I won immunity! I kept the plan alive for the alliance, and now we can go forward with what we need to do!"- Matthew
"Just like that, Matthew has won individual immunity!" Chris announced as Matthew received a round of applause from his fellow campers.
"Matthew pulled out a win big time! Step one: completed. Now all we need to do is bring the majority alliance together and put out another blindside."- Tory
"This isn't new; now that I don't have immunity, I've got to talk to everyone and see if I can get some people to flip."- Katelyn
"As for the rest of you, you'll have to vote someone out tonight," Chris reminded as he turned to the main camera, "What deals will be made? How will the campers deal with their prizes & punishments? And who will be voted out tonight? Find out after the break on Total...Drama...Island:...Return to Wawanakwa!"
