Chapter Eighteen
Hey guys so I just realized that I don't have any reward challenges in this fanfic. Sorry about that. I totally forgot and now it's too late but oh well, there are still a lot of chapters and there was still enough time to develop friendships and relationships so it's all good.
I wake up and look across the room at Gwen. I give her a fierce glare. She's still asleep so she doesn't see me, but I don't care. There will be plenty of time for harshness today. I plan to destroy her completely. Karma, or in this case revenge, is a b**ch! I hop out of bed and grab my clothes to change out of my PJ's.
"I'm going to get ready, Chris is probably about to yell at us to wake up anyway. You coming?" I ask Eva. She groans but gets up anyway. As we walk to the bathrooms we talk strategy.
"We're almost there, almost to the finale! If it's us against each other in the finale, we can forget all the pressure because we'll know that no matter who wins the money will be split. That means that today and tomorrow are the days we will stomp out Gwen and DJ. I was thinking of getting rid of Gwen first, since although DJ is a traitor, I'd rather have Gwen out of my sight for good. Just seeing her makes me angry. I don't understand how she felt she had the right to be mad at me during All Stars! I mean, sure the chart was kind of rude but it's got nothing on what she did to me!" I rant.
"I agree! What a jerk! Let's get rid of her," Eva says, an fierce look on her face.
"Perfect! All we have to do is insure she doesn't get invincibility!" I grin, excited by the thought of sweet revenge. Me and Eva change and get ready for the day, then go to the cafeteria and start eating breakfast. Gwen and DJ show up a bit later, and I'll bet it's because they were forming an alliance. If they did, it's two against two. Two losers against two winners. We eat breakfast then Chris tells us to meet him in the forest.
"Ugh! Another forest challenge! These ones tend to be pretty dangerous," I whine, jogging alongside Eva to the forest.
"I know right!" DJ agrees, catching up to us. But we shun him. No kindness towards a traitor. We can all be friends again after we beat him. DJ frowns and runs by Gwen instead. Me and Eva give each other 'haha he deserved that' looks. We reach the forest and Chris explains the challenge.
"Good morning campers. Well actually, I don't know if your having good mornings, but if you are you won't be anymore when this challenge is through with you! The basis is simple, you create a roller coaster out of any materials you can find, then you ride it. The winner of invincibility will be the person with the biggest, most epic coaster. Oh, and if your roller coaster breaks and you fall, you automatically lose your chance at invincibility. Here's one tip: don't play it safe. If you make a small, close to the ground roller coaster to ensure your own safety, me and Chef will think it's lame and long story short you won't be the one who wins invincibility. GO!" Right after Chris yells go, Gwen and DJ dart off into the forest together. I think it's safe to say that confirms that they made an alliance. Me and Eva look at each other and roll our eyes at the thought of them thinking they stand a chance against us.
"Any ideas of how in the world we're going to make 'epic' roller coasters?" I ask.
"Not really. I guess we should just start by building tracks out of wood then we can move on to figuring out how we're going to make a cart that will actually move on the tracks," Eva says. I nod my head in agreement. I really want to disagree because what she just suggested is not an intricate plan, and I always plan everything. In my ideal, we'd figure out how the cart is gonna work before we start anything, but Eva is my friend and a very strong player so I want to give her idea a chance despite my disagreement. I start to come up with ideas to make her plan work.
"How are we going to get the wood to stick together? I don't think the glue in the craft tent is sticky enough," I say.
"Umm, I don't know. You've spent much more time on this damned island then me, do you know anything that could be sticky?" This sure is a dilemma, but Eva is right, I've been here for a while. I think for a minute then it hits me.
"Oh, I know! There are some super strong vines in the middle of the forest, and there's also super sticky mud near the vines. We could tie the wood together using the vines then use the mud for a little extra stick."
"Good idea! Do you wanna get the mud or the vines?"
"I'd rather get the vines if that's okay with you." I do not want to be scooping mud! I don't like getting dirty, it makes me feel... dirty. We set off to find the vines and mud.
The vines are harder to get then I thought they'd be. Because their so strong, their also hard to rip off the trees. I'm sitting up on a tree at the end of a vine which is hanging off the tree. I am unable to get the vine off with my hands, so I have to climb down to the branch below the one I was on and bite the vine off with my teeth. It hurts my teeth, takes a long time and on top of that it tastes disgusting. I wish Duncan were here so he could carve a knife for me to use. I don't have a pocketknife to carve a knife with, but I know he would even though we aren't allowed to bring any weapons from home. I don't want to, but I have to admit my defeat to Eva.
"Eva? This isn't working. I've only gotten one vine. At this pace, we'll take all day!"
"Okay. Come down and we'll figure something out," Eva calls up to me. I climb down and she meets me under the tree. She had been scooping mud from a puddle that was pretty close to the tree I was in. I explain how the vine was super hard to remove from the tree. Eva picks up the vine at our feet that I was able to get off. She breaks a piece off of it with no trouble at all. My jaw drops in astonishment.
"Maybe I should do the vines and you should do the mud," Eva chuckles. I giggle and give her an "okay" in agreement. I walk to her mud pile, which is pretty big. I look at the disgusting mud puddle and rolls up my sleeves. I mutter about how gross it is under my breath as I scoop mud from the puddle. A long time goes by and I create a huge pile.
"You about done?" I call up to Eva.
"Yup, one more vine!" Eva finishes her last vine and comes back down. She has collected a lot of vines. We put the vines into a pile near my mud pile. I wipe sweat from my head.
"Screw this show!" I huff.
"No kidding."
"Time to collect wood," I grumble. This show never lets us catch a break! Me and Eva climb a tree that is covered in branches and rip/break branches off from the top. We drop them down onto the ground which is far below, knowing that we can gather them when we get down.
We've stripped the tree of it's branches top to bottom, which took hours (it's a medium sized tree). It was worth it though, now we have enough branches for both of our coasters. We put all the branches in a pile and start making our tracks. It's a grueling, frustrating process but we pull it of. We now have lots of tracks, and it's time to connect them to make our roller coasters. There's still a good amount of mud and vines left to connect the tracks.
"How are we gonna do this? Should we build one coaster at a time and help each other or should we just make our own?" I ask.
"There's no time limit to this challenge so either is fine. It would probably be easier to help each other."
"Good idea. We can do yours first if you want," I say, attempting to be friendly.
"Okay, thanks!" Me and Eva get to it. She was about to jump right in, but I, being the smart girl I am, got her to make a model of it first (by drawing the model in the mud with a stick). We begin working.
My muscles are aching, we've been working for over an hour. The roller coaster is pretty cool, it starts about halfway up a tall tree on a big branch, which the first track is placed on. Then we built it so you go down the tracks, then go up again (using the momentum from the drop), then zigzag around. Then you go down a smaller hill and go over a few small track bumps. Finally, you go up a decent sized hill using the momentum from the last bump, then go down the hill and do a small loop. Hopefully nobody dies on the loop.
"We did it!"
"Heck yeah we did!" Eva grins, and we give each other a big high five. A smirk creeps to my lips as an idea pops into my head.
"Since we've been doing hard labor for hours now, I think we should take a break to restore our mojo. And I know just how to do it."
We creep through the forest, flinching when our feet crunch on fallen leafs. We listen for voices.
"I think we've almost finished!" Her voice makes me want to rip off my ears.
We walk towards the voice, being sure that our presence is not known. Once we're close, we hide behind two big Oak trees and peek our pretty little heads out to see the Vampire Queen looking at her roller coaster with pride. Oh, and DJ is there too. They're both smiling. I hold in a giggle, thinking about their facial expressions growing to horror when Eva and I's sabotage makes their precious creations break. Gwen and DJ turn around and begin to pick up fallen tree branches to build their second roller coaster. Those idiots must have had the same idea and Eva and I, to help each other build each person's roller coaster. I quietly speed walk right up behind mama's boy and gothy, and hope to myself that they don't notice me. I reach up to pull a supporting branch off their coaster, so the tracks break when the cart goes over that part. Their backs still turned to me, I try to work the branch out without making noise. It is wedged between the track sides they built, so it's pretty hard to pull out. When I finally get the branch loose, it makes a huge scraping sound. I yank my arms to my sides as quick as I can as Gwen whips around.
"What the frick are you doing?" She gets up in my face.
"I was just... just..." I bolt, my legs running faster than a cheetah. Actually, we studied cheetahs in my animal science class and learned that it is impossible for nearly any animals to run as fast as them, so I'm not running as fast as a cheetah, but that's beside the point. I zigzag through trees while trying to continue blazing through, but find myself slowing down due to the amount of trees I have to dodge. I hear the crunching of feet behind me. Why is that loser still chasing me? She should just retreat! My breathing grows heavier, the filling and releasing of air in my lungs shaking my pretty frame. I finally lose boyfriend stealer, and slow my run to a brisk walk. I look all around but don't see Eva anywhere. Are you freaking kidding me? Where is she?! UGH. The best I can do is go back to the roller coaster and wait for Eva, assuming that she'll come back eventually. I have a good sense of direction, so I locate the tacky amusement park ride pretty quickly. I smile pridefully at my direction skills, then my happiness turns bittersweet thinking of Duncan. Our first kiss was because I knew the way back to camp and he didn't. We crashed into each other and got our antlers tangled up with each other. When he asked if I wanted to make out, I couldn't resist the urge to do it. I had promised myself that I was only on the island for the money and would trust no one, but as our lips collided I knew I had broken my promise to myself. I wish he were still here, our friendship is so refreshing after hating each other for so long. Or at least wanting to hate each other, even though we both know neither of us could. Eva pulls me out of my thoughts as she punches me in the arm.
"Hey, that hurt!"
"Sorry, I haven't gotten used to your weakness yet. All of my other friends have muscle."
"Um, excuse me, but I do to have muscle!" I playfully flex, giggling. So this is what it's like to have friends who you laugh with. Tom and I rarely laugh together. I still love him though.
"Good news. While you were being the perfect distraction-"
"I wasn't trying to be a distraction! I didn't want to be chased through the forest and almost hit my beautiful face on trees I was dodging!"
"Well you were a distraction, whether you wanted to be or not. And because you were a distraction, I was able to finish pulling the branch out! Neither of them noticed that you had loosened it, and both of them chased you. So they have no idea that they've been sabotaged!" Eva grins, the happiest she's been all day. Ah, sabotage. It can really make a girl's day.
"Hopefully Gwen uses the coaster we sabotaged. Wouldn't it suck if we went through that just to get DJ thrown off?"
"Yeah, it would!" Eva says.
"I mean, getting rid of DJ is a goal of ours, but Gwen has to go first! I hate her!"
"Agreed."
We begin working on our second roller coaster. It's tough work, but after all the hell this show has put me through, this is nothing. I am so ready to have a friendship finale. Chris can't do anything to turn Eva and I against each other, we know all his little tricks and also know that neither of us would ever do anything to hurt the other.
I smile as I look over at the black haired girl put together a track. Her and I have come so far since season one when all she seemed to be was an angry freak. I can see now that she's so much more than that. I've found myself wanting to open up to her, let her see the Courtney that no one knows about. The girl who cries herself to sleep and flinches when she looks in the mirror. But I can't do that, I have to keep my barriers up. They keep me safe.
I realize that we didn't make a floor plan of this roller coaster. As you've probably picked up by now, it's nearly impossible for me to just go with the flow. I love having plans, they make me feel secure. Their a path for me to follow to ensure I don't go in the wrong direction. I tell Eva my issue. She tells me that we'll be fine and to just keep going. I take a deep breath and respect her wish. I continue building without a plan.
I'm working like a machine, doing the same thing over and over; make a track then attach it to the roller coaster. I have nothing to think about so I focus on the smell of the forest. It smells like nature, and it relaxes me. I've never comprehended how nice the smell of pine trees is. I breath in big and smile as the scent fills my nose. It brings me back to simple days. At my elementary school, there were pine trees surrounding the playground. I'd always sit on a purple painted bench with Tom and we'd drill each other on addition questions. Life was so much easier then, because despite the petty fights over markers, everyone was friends. And no one was judgmental.
Funny I'd say that when I'm the most judgmental person I know.
The pine smell brings back more than first grade.
Duncan and I lay on the ground, laughing. It's during Total Drama Action, while the cameras aren't rolling. The pine smell is present as Duncan and I talk, looking up at the tops of the trees.
Without warning, my brain fast forwards.
I look in the mirror, tears streaming from my eyes, my face red. Here I am, with no fake face on. Just the raw me, and I look exactly how I'm feeling.
Destroyed.
I don't want to think anymore. I bring my attention to the task at hand and try to block any thoughts from entering my brain. I pick up a stick and add it to the roller coaster tracks. It's hard not to think when your brain keeps screaming at you to listen. I think through my actions. I'm using a vine to tie a stick to the track. I try my best to continue keeping my focus on what I'm doing, but I can't. The silence makes it too hard not to think. I should just tell Eva. I should just tell her that I'm sad. But I can't. I don't want to seem weak. I can't seem weak.
I want to feel Duncan's breath on my neck. Whenever I'd stay the evening at his house, we'd always cuddle and he'd lay his head just above my shoulder and the feeling of his warm breath on my neck would make me feel like everything was okay. All of my bad thoughts would disappear from my mind and I'd feel content and happy. I don't want to wish I could feel the embrace of Duncan's lips on mine, I don't want to wish that he'd hold me close at night, I don't want to wish that we could play video games in his room for hours and hours like we used to...
But I do.
It hurts so bad to want something that you don't want to want. I feel tears form in my eyes, wishing that I could stop being in love with him.
"You've been on four seasons and still haven't won once! Your embarrassing the family name! You better win this season, Courtney. As my daughter I know your capable of winning. You just need to forget about that boy and focus on the win. You've failed enough already, you don't need to fail again."
Mom is right. I need to forget about Duncan and stop being such a failure. I blink back my tears. I work hard on the roller coaster. Eva and I tirelessly build track after track.
As I step back and look at our final product, I smile. Eva was right that we didn't need a plan. The coaster looks great! Now we just need to build the cart. Shoot, that's gonna be hard.
"How are we gonna make the cart?"
"I was counting on you to figure out how. Your the smart one!" Eva exclaims.
"Hmm." I think for a while.
"Oh I know! Let's build the cart out of wood and use tree sap to put it together, just like we did with the tracks. We can make the wheels out of wood as well," I smile, happy with my great idea. Eva gives a nod of approval and starts sticking together pieces of wood. All the sudden, I hear a big crack. I swivel my head around to see a huge hole in the first roller coaster we built.
"F**K!" I scream. I blindly rush as fast as I can towards the crack and see DJ darting off into the woods. I chase after him. How could I be so stupid as to think that they wouldn't try to get us back for our sabotage? I dart through trees, my feet pounding on the floor as my anger propels me to run even faster. I make a jump for it and tackle DJ. He smacks onto the ground, his big body making a huge thump. I get off of him, pissed as heck.
"What did you do?!" I scream in DJ's face, the fierce side of me kicking in. The big guy whimpers, showing the wimp that he is. I love DJ but he seriously is a huge wuss.
"I- I'm sorry! I was just getting you back! I threw a big rock on your track and it broke a hole in it," says DJ. I think about forcing him to come rebuild what he broke, but I don't because I'm smart enough to know that that would only give him the opportunity to sabotage us even more. I leave him with a warning to chew on,
"You are so gone. No one messes with me and Eva." I grin evilly as I walk away from the terrified man.
"That. Was. Awesome! I love how much of a badass you are, just like me." I turn around to see Eva behind me. She grins, giving me a high five that is too hard.
"Ouch!"
"Sorry, you know I have a problem with being gentle, even when I'm trying to be." Eva sheepishly remarks.
"It's all good," I laugh, shaking my slightly red hand.
"We better get to fixing that darn hole in the track," I sigh, looking up at the damage. I frown, pissed that we have to redo part of our hard work. Eva grumbles under her breath and gets to work. I do the same, using leftover wood, sap and vines to reconfigure the damaged part of the track.
I smack my hands up and down and slap them to my sides.
"Welp, I think that's good enough," I say, gazing at the fixed track.
"Sure is. Good as new, just not as good looking as it was." Our sabotage on Gwen and DJ was much better then theirs on us. Theirs would've been okay if this were a timed challenge since It'd slow us down, but since it isn't timed all we had to do was simply fix the track. After a quick break to restore the energy in our bodies, Eva and I finish our roller coaster cart.
"Done!" I shout, pumping my fist in triumph.
"Nailed it!" Says Eva. We sit down on the ground, to wait for Gwen and DJ to finish. As my brain comes down from the excitement of finishing the challenge, my bad thoughts creep back into my mind. I want to just tell Eva what's been eating at me. That's what friends are for, to tell the things you wouldn't tell anyone else. But I'll seem so pathetic. The words want to leave my mouth. I've been missing Duncan and it's making me so sad. I keep the words in and poke my finger with the edge of a sharp pine cone, as if maybe my thoughts would flow out in the blood that surfaces instead of from my mouth. It doesn't work.
"What happened?" Eva asks, seeing the blood on my finger.
"I accidentally poked myself with a pine cone. I'm fine though," I lie. It hurts. Chris' voice comes over the intercom.
"Looks like everybody has finished the challenge! Campers, meet at DJ and Gwen's roller coasters. We'll review DJ's first." Eva and I walk back to DJ and Gwen's area and stand next to each other. DJ looks frightened as he climbs into his cart at the top of his coaster.
"Mama," he squeaks, being the typical wuss he is. Eva and I laugh at him, and Gwen glares at us. I look towards her and scrunch my face up in disgust. Gwen rolls her eyes, something she's done countless times. I laugh and turn my attention back on DJ. He leans forward and his cart tips down the top of the coaster and down the first hill. Using that momentum it goes up a smaller hill, rushes down, then goes to the left then the right. That's the end. I look to Eva, confidence on my face. We grin at each other seeing how lame DJ's coaster was. Chris speaks as DJ steps out of his roller coaster, looking proud of himself.
"Here's the deal, DJ. You didn't fall. Your structure was good. But it was so boring! I wasn't impressed," says Chris.
"I agree with Chris. That'd be the last ride I'd go on if I were at an amusement park," Chef barks in his deep and loud voice. DJ is visibly disappointed. How tragic. I give Eva a knowing look. Between this failure and our sabotage on Gwen, me or Eva is sure to win.
We move on to Gwen's roller coaster. Gwen climbs into her cart, exuding confidence. It takes everything in me not to laugh, knowing that she's sure to fall because of the sabotage. Gwen's cart starts rolling. She goes down a big hill then does a loop. The cart zigzags then goes up a small hill then rolls down it. As she's going through the second round of zigzags, the track breaks. She screams like a dying bird as she and the cart smash down on the ground. Eva and I cackle manically.
"You... jerks!" Gwen shouts, which only makes Eva and I laugh harder. DJ rushes to help Gwen up.
"Well, since your roller coaster broke Gwen, you have no chance of invincibility," Chris informs.
"No fair! Courtney and Eva sabotaged me!" Gwen shrieks with her crackly voice.
"So? You and DJ tried to do the same to us!" I comeback.
"I don't care who did what to who, I never said that sabotage wasn't allowed!" Chris says, and we start walking- sulking for Gwen- towards me and Eva's creations.
"We got this in the bag," Eva grins cockily.
"Darn right we do." We make it to the coasters and I climb into my cart first. I feel fear wash over me and take a slow breath. Me and Eva made sure this was sturdy, there's no need to worry. My cart dips down the track and I let out an excited scream. The wind blows through my hair as I blaze through the tracks. The loop is terrifying- I feel as if I'm going to fall out. But I don't, and I successfully make it through the tracks. I hop out of the cart with a big smile.
"Very nice, Courtney! That was an epic roller coaster!" Chris says, and I high five Eva.
"I agree! Twists, hills, turns, zigzags and a loop- this roller coaster had everything and worked perfectly!" Chef compliments me. I give a knowing grin in return, not surprised that I didn't fail to succeed.
Eva's turn! I watch as she fearlessly climbs into the cart and flies through her tracks. Her coaster has the same design as mine, she just happened to get the one with the patched hole in it. She makes it through successfully and jumps out of the cart and comes over to me, listening to Chris and Chef's feedback.
"The thing that bothers me is that you and Courtney had the same design. That's very unoriginal of you, Eva and Courtney. However, I never said that you couldn't have the same design, so good job. Like Courtney's, you had a very epic roller coaster."
"I agree," says Chef.
"Just give me and Chef one minute so we can discuss the winner." Gwen and DJ both look defeated as we wait for the results. I feel powerful to see Gwen looking so powerless. Chris and Chef turn to face us.
"Courtney and Eva had the same designs, and DJ's coaster was boring. Gwen is out completely for falling, thanks to some good old fashioned sabotage. In the end, it all comes down to who's roller coaster was the coolest, sturdiest and most polished. Courtney, you get invincibility!" Chris announces.
"YES!" I shout, and pull Eva into a hug. I must have beaten Eva because the patching of the hole in her coaster was visible and made it look less polished. Chris smirks at the thought of kicking off someone tonight.
"I'll see you all at the elimination ceremony," he says.
I plop down on Eva's bed bunk, right next to her.
"Um, body space?" She jokingly remarks. I giggle and scoot to the edge of the mattress to give her more room.
"We killed it in the challenge today," I say.
"Heck yeah we did. I can't wait to vote for Gwen tonight. Talking strategy, there will probably be two votes against me and then our two against Gwen, so I'll be ready for a tie breaker. I'm sure I can beat Gwen at anything, unless it's academic. I'm a B- student and she seems to be an A- student."
"It's funny how she can be so decent in school when she's so stupid in life," I joke. Eva laughs at my cruelty. We chat on the snugglely bed, and I feel like a little girl at a sleepover. It's fun having a friend to joke around with.
Dinner was disgusting, as usual. I'm glad my stomach survived long enough to make it here, at the elimination campfire. I sit next to Eva, our thighs touching in a friendly way. I've gotten very comfortable with Eva since we became friends. It really shows that you can't judge someone before you truly know them. Eva is already one of my favorite people, along with Mom, Dad and Tom. I feel... close to her. Just like the way I felt with Bridgette, Sadie and Katie but even stronger.
Chris begins his big speech.
"Today, there was sabotage, failure, and victory when you all made your roller coasters. In the end, Gwen fell off due to sabotage by Eva and Courtney, DJ's roller coaster was boring, and Eva had a small part in her track that was clearly patched up that made her coaster just not polished enough to win. Courtney has invincibility due to her stable, polished and awesome fun roller coaster. If you don't get a marshmallow, your out. And you can never come back. EV-ER. The first marshmallow goes to..... DJ!" Chris tosses the marshmallow to DJ, who sighs in relief as he catches it, before tensing up again realizing that Gwen is still in danger of elimination.
"The last marshmallow goes to.... it's a tie!" I knew there'd have to be a tie breaker.
"For this tie breaker, you Gwen and Eva will be fighting alligators. Vicious ones. First to fight her alligator off wins the tie breaker, and the other girl will be taking the boat of losers straight off this island." A group of interns brings out two big alligators who both look thirsty for flesh. Eva hops up and, as usual, confidentially marches straight up to her alligator with no fear. Gwen is more reluctant as she walks up to her alligator, both gators still being held onto by interns. Gwen and Eva position themselves in fighting stances in front of the gators.
"The fight begins in three... two... one!" Chris shouts, and the interns let go of the alligators and run off. Gwen tries throwing a punch at her gator but is soon in self defense mode as the gator attacks her, clawing at her poorly moisturized face. Eva throws rapid punches at her alligator, and it has no chance to fight back against her unbelievable strength because she's too fast with her fists. Eva slams the gator right in the nose with an ultra strong punch that would've knocked any human out cold. The gator screeches and retreats into the bushes.
"Eva wins!" Chris yells, as Gwen continues being attacked. The interns get the gator off a stunned Gwen.
"So it's just... over?" Gwen asks, bewildered.
"Yep," chirps Chris.
"Well... I'll miss you DJ," Gwen says, looking defeated and angry as she hugs DJ. She gives Eva and I one final glare as she hops on the boat of losers.
"Glare all you want, but your a goner and Eva and I still have our chances at the million," I smirk. Gwen just rolls her eyes, her only defense mechanism. The boat takes Gwen exactly where I want her to be; far, far away. I give Eva a high five that makes a hard smack as our hands collide. Not only did I get Gwen out, I did it by sabotage. Nothing's in my mouth but this revenge sure tastes sweet. Friendship finale, here me and Eva come! I turn my attention to Chris as he gives his hostly outro.
"Who will the final two end up being? How will the beef with Eva and Courtney against DJ play out? What torture will the next challenge bring to the final three? Find out next time on Total. Drama. Island 2.0!"
