Episode 9: Gotta Get Lucky- Immunity Challenge
"Welcome back to Total Drama Double Trouble!" Chris greeted as the cameras focused on him by the challenge site, "Before the break, the campers were told to head through the forest to get to today's challenge. Let's see if they're feeling 'lucky'."
--------
By virtue of following the path behind the mini-mansion as well as a few signs that were hung on trees, the present campers managed to make their way to the challenge site, where Karlie was already waiting for them. The site was nothing new to them; it was the same building in the production camp that was used for the last immunity challenge. This left the group curious as to what the upcoming challenge would be.
"Hello campers!" Chef Hatchet shouted in his usual tone.
"Hey, Chef," Veronica greeted, "Are you hosting the challenge today?"
"Nah, Chris is booked for all the challenges this season," Chef Hatchet revealed, "Just head inside."
With that, the group of eleven filed into the building. As they entered the building, they were left speechless with what was inside. Although, considering that it was pitch black, they weren't able to see anything worth commenting on. One by one, they hesitantly shuffled into the building, doing their best not to run into anyone or anything. Once the last person was completely in the building, Chef Hatchet slammed the door shut, shocking the campers.
"Well....that was unexpected," Karlie commented.
"Alina!" Callie screamed, "Where are you?!"
"I'm right here!" Alina replied as she pulled Callie towards her, "Don't worry!"
"I'm not good with the dark. It's not that I think that there are 'monsters' or anything in the dark. It's that I can't see anything in the dark; my family, friends, and other people that I care about are just, hidden behind a black curtain. It's really daunting."- Callie
"So the door shuts and we're all stuck in here. Sure, we could've tried to push the door open, but Chef was probably pushing against it from the other side. All we could do was wait."- Tory
"This would've been a good opportunity to look for the invincibility statue; after all, no one would see what I was doing. But because it was so dark, I couldn't tell which table was the gold one. And I wasn't gonna start aimlessly crawling from table to table. I'll have to find it later."- Daniel
"Ladies and gentlemen, it's...." a voice began before the lights turned on, revealing Chris standing in a suit on a small stage, "....blackjack time here at Camp Wawanakwa!"
With the lights now on, the group was able to inspect their surroundings. The walls were a mellow gold, the carpet below them was a dark red, there were four differently coloured tables with buzzers on them, and there were pictures of all the past winners of Total Drama on the walls, including Amalia. And in front of them was a small stage with an extremely large television screen on it. While this was an exciting sight for many of them, they all were still curious as to what the challenge would be.
"Everyone take a spot at a table: three tables of three, and one table of two," Chris declared, thus allowing the campers to separate and head to the tables of their choice, "Today, we're gonna play a little blackjack."
"Um, Chris!" Callie called out as she raised her right hand, "Not all of us are nineteen."
"That hasn't stopped him before," Alina reminded as she grabbed Callie's wrist and gently lowered her hand, "Best not to question it."
"You won't be gambling: today's challenge will test your memory and your math skills," Chris revealed, "On my go, playing cards will appear and disappear from the screen at random, each with a camper's face on them and a numerical or letter value in the top left corner. Your goal will be to find two, three, or four cards that add up to twenty-one. Once you think that you've figured out a valid set of cards, you must hit your buzzer, and repeat to me the names of the campers on the cards that correspond to your numbers. If your set of cards is valid, you get to pick one person to eliminate from the challenge. If your set of cards is invalid, you will be eliminated."
"So let's say Alina is on the 'queen' card, and Tory is on the 'ace'," Zeyad began, "I would buzz in, and say Alina & Tory?"
"Correctomundo," Chris confirmed, "Is it clear to everyone?"
"Yes!" the campers replied in unison.
"I won a memory challenge for my team earlier in the season, so maybe I can win this one."- Spencer
"I don't want to win immunity again because I know it'll make me a bigger target. But if I have to win to prevent Tory, Zeyad, or Spencer from winning it, I'll do it."- Veronica
"I'd like to win at least one immunity challenge before the season ends. If I get immunity, it'll make it easier for me to call the shots because I can't be voted out."- Karlie
"Let's do this," Tory remarked as he stood at the gold table, "Um...Daniel? What're you doing?"
"Oh, sorry," Daniel apologized as he got up from being on one knee, "I was stretching."
"Stretching?" Tory asked, unsure if he heard Daniel correctly, "It's a memory challenge, dude."
"In order to stretch the mind, I've got to stretch the body," Daniel claimed, "It's only logic."
"Okay, not my smoothest excuse." *pulls invincibility statue out of his pocket* "But this was worth it. Now that I have this, the challenge can be my sole focus." *smiles*- Daniel
"Good point," Tory agreed as he began stretching his hamstrings.
--------
With everybody ready, Chris picked up a tv remote and clicked the 'start' button, allowing the different cards to begin flashing by the screen. There were multiple kinds; there was Callie on the 'ace', Karlie on the five, Tory on the six, Dallas on the seven, and several others. But it wasn't until Rhythm's face showed up on the 'three' that someone buzzed in.
"Daniel buzzes in first!" Chris announced as the other campers turned to look at him.
"Callie, Dallas, and Rhythm," Daniel listed, followed by the sound a bell sounding.
"Correct!" Chris revealed as the other campers quietly clapped, "Who would you like to eliminate?"
That question made the other campers a bit more nervous. Even those that were aligned with Daniel were a bit nervous. No one knew what strategies would come into play with this challenge, leaving many to wonder what Daniel would choose to do.
"I'll eliminate Spencer," Daniel announced, much to Spencer's disappointment.
"Spencer, please take a seat on the bench at the side," Chris ordered, forcing Spencer to walk away from the table and sit down on the sidelines.
"I thought that Daniel and I were good! I thought that he didn't hate me anymore! Man....that guy is one tough dude to read, let alone trust."- Spencer
"Spencer beat me in the last memory challenge, so with him out, that increases my chances at winning, which is what I need."- Daniel
"Time for round two!" Chris declared, "Pay attention!"
With the remaining campers turning their attention back to the tv, cards began popping on and off the screen. In general, there was no set strategy with how to win the challenge. You could just stay silent and hope that everyone answers incorrectly, you could plan which numbers that you want to say, or you could actually try and remember all the faces that you've seen. For one camper, that was their plan.
"Rhythm buzzes in!" Chris announced, "What's your guess?"
"Karlie.....Callie.....Spencer?" Rhythm answered, a bit unsure.
"That's wrong!" Chris declared after hearing a 'wrong' buzzer sound, "Rhythm, you're out: take a seat on the bench next to Spencer."
"Eh, oh well," Rhythm remarked as she walked away from her table.
"Wait, Callie's card was an ace, not a ten!" Dallas interjected, "Rhythm should still be in."
"Callie's card was an ace last round," Chris corrected, "This round, it's a ten."
"Okay, I get that these challenges are supposed to be difficult, but it's hard enough to remember the cards when they don't change! This is just overkill."- Dallas
"I honestly thought that I had it. But hey, you win some, and you lose some, right?"- Rhythm
"Time for round three!" Chris declared, "Here they are!"
Once again, the cards flashed to and from the screen. Even though the cards were switching at the same rate as the last two rounds, it felt much faster to everyone else. It was likely due to adrenaline; the knowledge that they had to act fast brought the competitive edge out of everyone. Everyone wanted to buzz in, but only one was able to hit their buzzer fast enough to beat the others.
"Daniel buzzes in again!" Chris reported, "And your answer...?"
"Zeyad, Spencer, and Karlie," Daniel replied quickly.
"Five....six....queen...yep!" Chris confirmed as a bell sounded, "Who'll you choose to eliminate?"
"Sorry man," Daniel apologized as he looked to his right, "I choose Tory."
"Whatever, man," Tory commented as he took a seat next to Spencer, "Looks like it's up to Zeyad."
"Which means we're screwed," Spencer noted.
"As much as I want to believe in Zeyad, he's not the brightest bulb on the 'Total Drama Christmas Tree'. This is probably gonna end badly for us."- Spencer
"I didn't expect to win; it's a mental challenge, so Daniel was bound to kill it. Luckily, if he keeps winning, he's gonna be a bigger target."- Tory
"Time for round four!" Chris declared as he turned his focus back to the screen.
This challenge, much like some of the previous ones, required the campers to have several skills as opposed to just one. For example, episode 2's challenge required the campers to use strength and strategy, and episode 3's challenge required campers to use speed and memory. For this challenge, it required campers to use memory and mathematics skills. And for some, it was hard to use both at once.
"Callie buzzes in!" Chris announced, "What's your answer?"
"Daniel, Veronica, and myself: Callie," Callie responded, halfheartedly.
"Seven...three....queen..." Chris counted before hearing a buzzer sound, "Ooh....sorry Callie! That's only twenty!"
"It's alright," Callie assured as she walked to the losers' bench with a smile.
"I mean, I tried my best, and it didn't work. But at least I tried." *smiles*- Callie
"It's really nice to see Callie give it a shot. Personally, I would've wanted her to wait until there were less people left in the challenge; no one would've targeted her. But hey, too late now."- Alina
"Time for round five!" Chris declared, "Better think fast!"
Thinking and acting quickly was a necessity in this kind of challenge. You needed to be able to read the letters, faces, and numbers on the cards, remember those names belonging to the faces, figure out which cards would add up to twenty-one, and which cards you needed to get you to twenty-one, all while looking at the new cards popping up on the screen. This made some campers nervous, and made one camper hit their buzzer after only two cards were shown on the screen.
"Kavan, what's your answer?" Chris asked as the other campers turned to face Kavan.
"Oh nooooooo!" Kavan exclaimed, laughing very hard, "What do I do?"
"Just say something random!" Veronica suggested as she tapped her boyfriend on the back, "You might get it!"
"Uh....me.....Karlie.....and Tory?" Kavan guessed, which was followed by a buzzer sound and him facepalming, "Of course..."
"Good try though," Alina praised as the other campers clapped and laughed along with Kavan.
"That's one way to go out, I guess," Kavan commented, smiling as he walked towards the losers' bench.
"I guess I just got a bit too eager; I just wanted to buzz in and get someone out. But lesson learned: memory games are not my thing." *laughs*- Kavan
"I don't blame Kavan for trying. He knows that he can absolutely crush physical challenges but mental challenges just tear him apart like a rabid bear."- Veronica
"Six people left: time for round six!" Chris announced.
With nearly half of the present campers eliminated from the challenge, the pressure increased as the possibility of winning immunity was nearly a reality. Once again, cards continued to appear and disappear from the screens as the campers watched them do so. Everyone was focused solely on the cards, at least until Daniel buzzed in for the third time.
"Spencer, Callie, and Kavan!" Daniel exclaimed, not waiting for Chris to announce his buzzing.
"That's..." Chris began before hearing a bell sound, "Correct! Who will you eliminate next?"
"Sorry, Zeyad," Daniel remarked, forcing Zeyad to join his allies on the losers' bench.
"That was longer than I thought," Zeyad commented as he sat down next to Tory, "I thought I'd be the first one out."
"F*ck...." Tory muttered as he hung his head in between his knees.
"Hey, at least Daniel's a threat now," Spencer reminded, "He's got to be gone if someone else guesses right."
"It's not good for me to keep on guessing, but I'm the only one left who's actually answered correctly. If I don't win, it's my own fault."- Daniel
"Daniel's on a roll, and that's both good and bad. It's good because I know that the next time someone else answers right, he's out. But it's bad because he could easily just guess right four more times and win immunity."- Dallas
"Time for the seventh round!" Chris announced as he restarted the shuffling of the cards.
Even though the concept of the challenge stayed the same as it progressed, the remaining campers felt that it was getting harder. For Daniel, the pressure was on him to answer correctly or else he'd probably be the next one out. For everyone else, they hadn't answered at all during the challenge, so if they didn't answer soon, they'd probably be eliminated sequentially. That knowledge motivated Karlie to take a gamble and buzz in.
"Alina, Veronica, and Kavan!" Karlie declared with fierceness.
"That is......correct!" Chris announced as a bell sound was played, "Karlie, will you do the honours?"
"Chris is pretty much hinting to me that I need to eliminate Daniel, and I can see why. Alina, Veronica, & Dallas are pointing at Daniel and Daniel has his hands in front of him, praying that I don't take him out. But this is my choice, and I know what I'm doing."- Karlie
"I'll eliminate Veronica," Karlie declared, shocking everyone.
"Um.....alright...." Veronica allowed, not wanting to overreact, "It's fine."
"No it's not!" Dallas exclaimed, "Why Veronica?"
"Girls, trust me!" Karlie insisted, "I know what I'm doing."
"I....." Dallas began before noticing Rhythm on the bench mouthing 'Shut up!' to her, "Alright, fine."
"She better know what she's doing. Aside from her, I was probably the next best person who could've beaten Daniel. But I didn't have a choice."- Veronica
"If I eliminated Daniel, I'd be the next one out because I'd be the only one left who's won a round. Now that Daniel is still in, he's still the biggest threat to win immunity, which buys me one more round."- Karlie
"Up to round eight!" Chris declared as he brought up the cards on the screen, "Watch carefully!"
The remaining campers didn't really need to be told that; if they weren't watching carefully by now, there was no hope for them to win the challenge. And at the rate at which the cards appeared and disappeared from the screen, you could blink and end up missing a card. Although this wasn't as much of a problem if you were looking for only two cards, like Dallas was.
"Dallas buzzes in!" Chris announced, "And your answer?"
"Daniel & Dallas," Dallas replied in a monotone fashion.
"N......nope!" Chris declared as a buzzer sounded, "That's only twenty!"
"F*ck!" Dallas screamed as she realized her error.
"By the way, would you guys mind cutting down on the swearing?" Chris requested, "We're pushing the restriction limits here."
"Can't you just get the editors to edit them out?" Dallas asked, visibly irritated.
"They can only edit out so much," Chris claimed before turning his attention back to the screen, "Anywho.....time for round nine! Go!"
With only Daniel, Karlie, and Alina left in the challenge, the tension was as high as it ever was. Aside from the sound of cards appearing and disappearing from the screen, it was pretty much silence in the casino-esque building. No one wanted to make a sound in fear of disrupting the thought processes of the remaining campers. It wasn't until Alina buzzed in that everyone perked up.
"Zeyad and Spencer!" Alina exclaimed, certain that she was right.
"That's correct!" Chris declared as Alina began cheering in happiness, "Who will you eliminate?"
"You already know, right?" Alina asked, facing Daniel.
"Yeah..." Daniel agreed, smiling, "I'll just take a seat with the others."
"Daniel's out!" Chris declared, "Alina & Karlie, one of you is about to win individual immunity."
"Now that Daniel's out, I don't really care who wins. It's all the same to me."- Rhythm
"I really hope that Alina wins. After all that's happened so far this season, I just want her to be safe."- Callie
"I trust Karlie more than Alina, so I hope that Karlie can pull this off and win immunity."- Veronica
"Good luck," Alina commented to Karlie.
"Same to you," Karlie replied.
With that final exchange, Chris began pulling up cards for the final round. With each remaining camper having answered correctly earlier in the challenge, no one was certain with regards to who would win. Everyone's eyes constantly switched from looking at the screen to looking at Alina & Karlie and then back at the screen. After what almost seemed like an eternity of looking, one of the campers felt confident enough to hit their buzzer, getting everyone else out of their focused stupor.
"Karlie buzzes in!" Chris announced, "What's it gonna be, Karlie?"
"Tory, Kavan, and.....Alina," Karlie answered, hoping that she was right.
"That is..." Chris began as he reviewed the cards that Karlie selected, "Correct! Congratulations Karlie, you've won individual immunity!"
That declaration immediately raised the mood in the building. Karlie's cheers of excitement were amplified by Daniel, Alina, Callie, and Veronica running over to raise her into the air. Kavan, Rhythm, and Dallas soon walked over to join the joyous celebration, while Tory, Spencer, & Zeyad remained seated on the benches, disappointed with the outcome.
"Now what, boys?" Tory asked.
"I guess we gotta do what we normally do," Zeyad rationalized, "Just talk to everyone."
"It's clear to us that we're not gonna be able to win challenges. All we can do is plead our cases to everyone else and convince them to use our votes to make a big move. Hopefully it works."- Zeyad
"Just to make it official, catch!" Chris called out as he tossed the golden marshmallow necklace to Karlie.
"Thanks!" Karlie thanked as she put the necklace around her neck, "Yeah! That was for you, Amalia!"
"It feels so good to win immunity. After being on a losing team, having my closest ally get evacuated, and nearly losing control of the game at the last elimination, I'm glad to know that I'm not going home. This is my time to shine."- Karlie
"Karlie winning doesn't really change anything for me; she wasn't my target. The plan may be to get one of the three outsiders off the island, but I have plans of my own. It's time for me to make a big move."- Rhythm
"It wasn't the most dramatic challenge, but it certainly brought the competitiveness, laughter, and blue language out of our campers," Chris noted as he began talking to the main camera, "Will Karlie's win change any plans? And who will be voted out next? Find out after the break, right here, on Total...Drama...Double Trouble!"
