Episode 17: One Step Forward- Immunity Challenge

It didn't take long for the five remaining campers to make their way to the beach, where they saw the structures for that day's immunity challenge. There were five tables, each with fifteen spools and a long, metal stick with prongs on them, five springs with an intricate metal maze resting on each of them, and a wooden disk resting on the top of each maze. It was clear that great care was taken into making each structure, making the campers concerned that the challenge would require an extreme amount of concentration.

"Hello campers. It's time for your next immunity challenge: Spring Forward," Chris declared as he turned to point out the different structures on the beach, "When I say go, you'll use your prongs to grab a spool, maneuver it through the metal maze, and place it on the disk on the top of the maze, stacking them as you maneuver more and more spools. The structure is mounted on a spring in order to make it harder to balance. If you accidentally hit the maze with your stick, the maze will tilt, the spools will fall off the disk, and you'll have to start over. The first camper to stack all their spools on top each other wins immunity and a guaranteed spot in the final four. If no one stacks all of their spools within fifteen minutes, the camper who has stacked the most amount of spools will win immunity."

"I'm pretty sure I saw this on a different show," Daniel whispered to Veronica.

"Just be glad that he's not gonna shoot arrows at us while we're doing the challenge," Veronica requested.

"I'll give you a few minutes to think about the challenge before we get started," Chris declared.

"I need to win immunity badly. Even though Daniel says that he's on my side, I still don't have enough votes for a majority. This is the only way to guarantee my safety."- Veronica

"I don't feel like I'm in danger of being voted out tonight, but I still want to win today. I want to make sure that I'm in control of my own fate in this game, and the only way to ensure that is to win immunity."- Karlie

"Now that I don't have any invincibility statues, the only way to guarantee my safety is to win immunity. I don't know if I can trust Karlie or Daniel 100%, so I have to give it my all."- Callie

--------

The footage then fast-forwarded to show the five campers standing by their tables, ready to begin the challenge. At this point in the competition, any thought of throwing the challenge was obsolete. It didn't matter who they trusted or how safe they felt; they all knew that winning immunity was the only way to guarantee that they couldn't be voted out. And with all that they've accomplished so far, they were desperate to not get eliminated.

"Alright campers: the winner of this challenge earns themselves a spot in the final four," Chris reminded as he pulled out his airhorn, "Ready, set........GO!"

Following the sound of Chris' airhorn, all five campers sprinted into action. They were in sync as they picked up their prongs and quickly carried their first spools over to the maze. But once they began maneuvering their sticks through the maze, they took a slower approach. They all banged into the maze a few times, but it didn't really matter. Since they just started the challenge, they didn't have to worry about tipping over any spools.

"And...there!" Veronica exclaimed as she placed her first spool on the disk.

"Veronica's is on the board first!" Chris narrated, "It's a one-horse race."

"Make that a two-horse race!" Daniel declared as he planted his first spool on the disk.

"I'm right behind you!" Karlie assured.

"Hold on a sec!" Alina requested, despite knowing that no one would wait for her.

"I think I'm stuck..." Callie admitted as she tugged at her pole, accidentally causing her to drop her spool, "Aw..."

"Looks like everyone has their first spool except for Callie," Chris narrated.

"This is a really hard challenge. The walls of the maze are actually really close together, so you have to be really careful to not hit it while you moving the stick through."- Callie

"Move methodically and strike swiftly..." Veronica muttered to herself as she grabbed another spool, "Move methodically and strike swiftly..."

"This challenge requires good hand-eye coordination and careful movements. Being a martial artist, I've spent years honing my craft, most of which involved reflex & positioning training. I guess I've inadvertently trained for this for over fifteen years." *chuckles*- Veronica

"Carefully...carefully," Daniel repeated as he carefully maneuvered his second spool through the maze.

"This challenge requires a lot of balance, or I guess....equilibrium. You want to move fast enough so you can stay ahead of everyone else, but you also want to move slowly and carefully enough so that you don't accidentally hit your maze and knock over your tower of spools. It was kinda stressful."- Daniel

"To the left....to the right..." Karlie whispered to herself, "C'mon muscle memory..."

"This is one of those challenges that looks easy, but quickly becomes a pain in the a**. But because we're pretty much doing the same stuff over and over again, I hoped that it would get easier and easier as it went on."- Karlie

"Slow and steady wins the race..." Alina reminded herself as she attempted to balance her second spool on the disk.

"For me, I wanted to move slowly and keep my focus on my own progress. That way, I wouldn't stress out and make a mistake. I figured that I'd make less mistakes that way."- Alina

--------

While moving slowly lessened the chances of you making mistakes, you weren't able to build a tower as fast as someone who was moving quickly. And since they only had fifteen minutes to stack their spools, they couldn't exactly afford to dilly-dally; before they knew it, thirteen minutes had passed by. By now, everyone was in a different situation and had their own strategy for the remainder of the challenge.

"Let's see..." Chris muttered as he examined all of the remaining campers' actions, "Alina is at five spools, Karlie is at nine spools, Daniel is at ten spools, Callie is at three spools, and Veronica is in the lead at thirteen spools."

"Why aren't you moving?" Karlie asked, pointing to Veronica, "All you need is two more and you win!"

"Calculated risk," Veronica answered.

"There's not a lot of time left, and I had a decent lead over Daniel, who was the next closest person to me. I didn't need to extend my lead and risk having my tower falling over, so I stopped."- Veronica

"You aren't moving either!" Veronica noted, pointing to Karlie's stack.

"Also a calculated risk," Karlie explained, smiling.

"Copycat," Veronica joked, laughing.

"I was in third place, and the two people in front of me were pushing the limit with their towers. Daniel was still racing to add more spools, while Veronica's tower could literally fall with a little breeze. I figured it'd be safer to just wait for the two of them to screw up so I can win."- Karlie

"Veronica & Karlie are staying put," Chris narrated, "But Callie, Daniel, & Alina are still trying to stack those spools!"

"That's right, Chris!" Callie confirmed as she accidentally hit her maze with her stick, causing her tower to fall over, "Aww..."

"Don't give up, Callie!" Alina encouraged as she stacked her sixth spool, eventually causing her tower to tip over and fall down, "Ooh....that's not good..."

"We gotta keep trying!" Callie insisted as she ran back to get another spool.

"The situation looked grim, but I wasn't ready to give up. Veronica, Daniel, and Karlie's towers could've easily fallen down in the next two minutes, so it was worth it to just stack as many as I could."- Callie

"One minute left!" Chris called out.

"Almost there..." Daniel muttered as he gently placed his twelfth spool on his tower, "Good."

"Ugh..." Veronica groaned as she stared at her table of spools for a few seconds, "I'm probably gonna regret this..."

While Veronica wanted to wait out the clock and hope that her lead would stand, she couldn't deny that Daniel was catching up fast. Knowing that Daniel wasn't going to stop, and also not wanting to face Daniel in a tiebreaker, Veronica ran back to her table, picked up her fourteenth spool and ran back to her tower.

"C'mon..." Veronica pleaded as she watched Daniel maneuver his thirteenth spool through his maze, "C'mon..."

"Thirty seconds left!" Chris called out.

"And..." Daniel muttered as he gently laid his thirteenth spool on the top of his tower, "Now stay..."

Despite her gut telling her to stop and just wait for the tiebreaker, Veronica began maneuvering her fourteenth spool through her maze. It was a big risk for her, but she didn't know if she had the energy to go through another fifteen minutes of running back & forth and tediously moving spools through a maze. And with this thought haunting its way through her mind, it took away enough of her focus to cause her to slightly tap the walls of her maze, causing the tower to sway.

"No....no!" Veronica exclaimed as the tower swayed from side to side, eventually collapsing onto the sand, "NOOOOOOOO!"

"And....Veronica's tower collapses to the ground!" Chris narrated.

"I can f*cking see that!" Veronica screamed as she whacked her maze with her stick, "F*CK!"

"Uh..." Daniel muttered as he stood with his fourteenth spool on his stick, "I'm gonna wait..."

"Ten seconds left!" Chris announced.

With that, Chris began counting down the remaining seconds in the challenge. With no one else in range of matching the height of Daniel's tower, everyone stopped working. Everyone's focus was set on seeing if Daniel's tower would fall. Karlie, who had the second tallest tower, was silently praying for Daniel's tower to fall so she could win immunity. But as the time winded down, it was clear that nothing was going to change.

"Three...two...one..." Chris counted before sounding his airhorn, "Game over! Daniel's won individual immunity!"

While Daniel wanted to celebrate, he turned his attention to Veronica, who was clearly frustrated. Feeling bad for his friend, he went to give her a hug, shortly followed by the remaining campers joining to hug her. Even though they were in a competition for a million dollar prize, that didn't stop them from caring for each other. Since they were hundreds of kilometers away from their families, they were each other's support system, and they didn't want to let each other down if they could do something about it.

"Hey, you almost won," Daniel pointed out, "You should be proud of how well you did."

"You sure as heck did better than me," Alina claimed, laughing.

"Keep your head up," Karlie insisted.

"Think on the bright side; you still have your hair," Callie joked, causing everyone to laugh.

"It sucks to lose the challenge when I was seconds away from winning it. And I'm grateful that the other campers are trying to make me feel better, but it hurts knowing that I also have to vote one of them out. But this queen isn't going to abdicate or whatever you call it; I'm going to fight until Chris tells me that I'm done."- Veronica

"Gotta break up the group hug; Daniel, here's your necklace," Chris declared as Daniel walked over and received the necklace from him, "The rest of you are vulnerable tonight."

"As of now, I'm undefeated in challenges since I got back to the island. Feels good, but there's no time to rest; I've got to work to make sure that the right person gets voted out tonight. I don't know who that will be yet, but I'm going to find out."- Daniel

"You have the rest of the day to think it through," Chris declared before turning to face the main cameras, "With Daniel immune, how will that affect everyone's strategies? And who will be voted out next? Find out after the break, right here, on Total...Drama...Double Trouble!"
