I sigh as I look out the window of the rental car, watching the scenery go by while I toyed with the bandages on around my arms. I look up and catch Duncan's eyes in the review mirror while he drove the car, a sad frown on his face and I quickly look away. I held my arms, closing my eyes and just wishing I was back home already.
It had been like this between us since Chris dropped us off at the nearest airport when we arrived to the next destination for the game shows challenge of the day. I couldn't talk to Duncan and he knew I didn't want to talk to him, I didn't know what to say to him. We both have been on edge with the exception of looking after (d/n). Thankfully, she was mainly asleep for the whole journey since she didn't want to sleep when she finally got to spend time with me.
The car stopped and I look out the window to see we were at the address Bridgette and Geoff gave us since they invited us for an Aftermath episode in Hawaii. "Let her sleep..." Duncan whispers so softly, not for (d/n), but for me like he was afraid to scare me. I nod, unclipping (d/n) from her booster seat and getting out of the car carefully with her in my arms. "I'll go park..." Duncan mutters out and I nod.
"I'll let Bridgette and Geoff know we're here." Duncan nods as I mutter out, him gripping the steering wheel. He opens his mouth to say something but sighs, shaking his head before driving off. I watch the car before walking off to the set wondering if it was going to be like this between Duncan and me from now on.
"(y/n)! You made it!" Geoff squeezes me in a hug, being careful of my sleeping baby. "Welcome and say hello from the audience favourite!" the audience cheers for me and I smile waving.
"I didn't know I was the audience favourite, I thought that was Owen."
"After the way you jumped Alejandro, you became everyone's favourite! Where's Duncan?" I bristle at his name.
"He went to park the car." Geoff frowns lowly, leaning down.
"Are you ok?" he whispers and I nod.
"Where Bridgette?"
"Oh! Long story short, Blainley sent her to Siberia."
"Right..." I go sit down with the rest of the cast, hugging them and talking with them since it's been so long since I last saw them.
"(y/n)! Omg!" Gwen hugs me. "Everyone saw what Alejandro did! Are you ok?"
"Uh, it's a little complicated. Can we maybe not talk about it here?" She nods and I hear the others greet Duncan as he sits a couple of benches behind me.
"That bad?" Gwen mumbles and I nod. Geoff continues with the show, Bridgette riding in on a surfboard with a damn bear and I clutch (d/n) closer to me. She murmurs, squirming in my arms and I struggle to keep her asleep.
"(y/n)..." I jump when I see Gwen and Duncan had switched seats so he was sitting next to me, his arms out to take (d/n) and I pass her to him. The cast talks about who should win the million, being split between Cody and Heather since everyone hates Alejandro now. I wasn't in the mood to join in the conversation, I just wanted to go home.
I freeze as I feel someone touch my hand that was laying on the couch next to me, looking down to see Duncan's fingers brush against my hand. He was looking away with a sad look on his face like he was worried I would turn him away or brush his hand off, but I did miss his touch. I turn my palm up and he hesitantly lays his hand in mine, entwining his fingers with mine and I slowly close mine around his. He brushed his thumb against my ring, squeezing my hand but I didn't have the energy to do it back.
Everyone gasps and I look up to see Geoff flying through the air when the bear hit him, Bridgette scolding Bruno the bear and he slumps to the other side of the stage and plops down with a huff. Bridgette and Geoff goes on to talk about which contestant might win the cash, saying Cody is unpredictable and that Heather is an unstoppable force.
"Next is Alejandro-"
"-you mean the jackass that ruined (y/n) and Duncan's perfect marriage!" Leshawna growls out and everyone agrees except Courtney.
"The audacity of this bastard to do such a thing! And I know Heather wouldn't even go that far to win!"
"Come on, just try and be impartial. At least he's in the last 3." Courtney huffs out but she squeals as the audience throws peanuts at her, booing. Bridgette and Geoff plays the video I sent them but I just felt sick even though it needed to be shown. I just didn't want to be here and I feel Duncan shift closer to me after giving (d/n) to Gwen. He hesitates before pulling me close to his chest, letting my hand go to wrap it around me as he moved my head to lay in his neck.
I feel like a huge weight just lifted off from my shoulders and I sag into Duncan's chest, trying to hold back my tears. "I'm sorry Duncan, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," I repeated over and over he shushes me quietly.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. I'm the one who should be saying sorry to you. I'm sorry..." Duncan leans his head on top of mine, just holding me.
"Now that the teams have been picked, time for you guys to play one more game to help your favourite final 3 contestants!" Bridgette says and I look up to see Courtney was the only one in Alejandro's team while the others split between Heather and Cody.
"One member from each team will have to do this death-defying challenge, so any volunteers? Geoff asks and Courtney immediately gets included cause she's only one team member.
"I'll do it." Duncan suddenly speaks up and I sit up.
"No! It's dangerous!" I speak up, gasping as I cover my mouth with my hands but Duncan smiles at me.
"You still care about me." He mutters.
"Of course I do. I won't stop caring about you." I frown and he leans his forehead on mine.
"Then I can prove myself to you." Duncan suddenly stands up. "I think he's a weakling but I'll volunteer for Cody."
"Great! And Blainley is volunteering for Heather!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was anxious the entire time, holding Duncan's hand while Geoff and Bridgette explained the challenge. Duncan chose a deer after I told him too since Cody is an absolute sweetheart and my heart sinks when I hear about the lava while surfing down the stream.
"Duncan..." He was lined up with the others to run to the top of the hill, looking over at me softly.
"I'll be ok (y/n)." The race starts and everyone runs to the top for the totems to get a lei while everyone else waited down at the beach while watching on a screen. I hear a bell and I instantly knew that it was time for a singing match.
"You've got to be shitting me..." Duncan mutters out a smile quirks on my face as he clears his throat.
"One last chance to prove my love, that's what keeps me up above. Why else would I volunteer for something death-defying."
Duncan sings out while grabbing a surfboard and riding the waves down, dueting with Courtney.
"I'm winning for real."
"Yeah yeah, I'm winning this too."
"Yeah yeah, I'm a surfing genie!"
"I'm winning for (y/n), you'll see!"
Duncan and Courtney race down the stream, going neck and neck at each other.
"(y/n), I can't help but love you, even though you don't want me to. For Cody I'll smash this game apart, to prove that you still have my heart."
I blush as Duncan sings for me, the girls aweing around me.
"Step aside, let me through."
"Yeah yeah. I'm still coming for you. I'm winning this time!"
"No can do Courtney, it's mine!"
Duncan beasts past the waves and I gasp as he surfs off the edge, flying through the air. "Duncan!" I scream out, ignoring the fact that he managed to get the lei on the deer when he splashed hard into the ocean. We all wait for him to get out of the water to congratulate him but we don't see him.
"He's taking too long!" Bridgette gasps out and I shake my shoes off, running towards the shore.
Come on, come on! Get out of the water!
"Duncan!" He doesn't resurface and I panic. "Duncan please! I can't lose you!" I yell out, running into the water. "Duncan-" he suddenly jumps out and coughs up water as I cry out, jumping onto him. "You're ok! Thank god you're ok!" I squeeze him tight and he hugs me back, burying his face in my neck.
"(y/n)-"
"-don't do that to me again!" Duncan carries me out of the water as I hugged him tightly. "I know you're mad-"
"-I love you too much to stay mad at you, and how many times do I have to say that this wasn't your fault... it was my fault..." Duncan whispers in my ear and I just squeeze him reply. I don't let go of him even if we reach the beach.
"I love you too Duncan... I'm sorry... I don't want to be mad at you anymore." He leans back and looks at me with surprise.
"Really? (y/n), you don't have to say that for my sake-" I cut Duncan off by pressing my lips onto his, kissing him sweetly. he quickly kisses me back, holding me tight to his chest as he held my cheek. I hear everyone cheer behind us and I smile in the kiss. "I promise I won't hurt you again." Duncan whispers against my lips before kissing my head.
"Daddy! Mama!" I turn around to see our little girl awake and running towards us, swooping her up in my arms and spinning her around as she squeals. "I love mama and daddy too!" I nuzzle my nose with (d/n) as I hugged her and Duncan wraps his arms around us both, kissing both our heads.
"We love you too our little sweets."
