Chapter Fourteen
I'm so sorry about the way this story is. I really don't like the plot or my writing in general. I will probably rewrite the entire plot if I ever get the time. Anyways...here's the chapter. It's pretty long I guess since I've been working on it for awhile. So yeah..enjoy.
Dean took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. He lifted his fist up and knocked at his brother's door. A woman answered the door. Dean froze, but Castiel smiled, "You must be Amelia!"
A little toddler sat a foot behind her. She smiled, "So this is the famous Dean!"
Castiel chuckled, "Oh no, I am Castiel. This is Dean," he gestured towards Dean.
He slipped his hand into Dean's as her mouth fell agape. "Ar-are you two together?"
Samuel snaked his arm around her slim waist. "Dean! You came!"
Dean smiled, "Yes, I did, but-uh-is it going to be a problem if we are together?"
Amelia shook her head slowly, "I have just never met a couple of queers before I suppose."
She took a step outside and her smile grew big again. She looked down at Alfie and asked, "Can I hold the little angel?"
Castiel nodded and smiled. They shared some small talk about their children. Cas explained what had happened to his wife. Dean tried to ignore their conversation and focused on Samuel. He held out his hand for him to shake, but Samuel pulled him into a hug. Dean was being crushed and said between breaths, "Can't-breathe-Sammy."
Samuel let go and stared at him. Dean questioned, "What is it? Is there something in my teeth?"
Samuel shook his head, "Oh no, it's just been a long time since you've called me that."
Dean smiled slowly and looked down bashfully, remembering their childhood. He was very protective of his brother back then. Samuel announced, "Come in! Please make yourselves comfortable!"
They all shuffled inside. Samuel lifted up his son, Thomas, into his muscular arms. Dean grinned, "What a beautiful kid you got there. How old is he?"
Samuel looked down at Thomas, "How old are you, buddy? Tell Uncle Dean."
Thomas was shy and hid behind his parents, but reluctantly spoke, "Thwee and a half, Uncle Deanie."
Dean grinned at the kid, but when realization hit, his smile faded, "You've been gone for quite some time now, huh?"
"Well, you did tell me to leave. But that's beside the point! You're here now and that's all that matters. So, we planned on going to dinner tonight and go dancing too. We already have someone trustworthy to watch the children!"
Castiel stared at him, "I don't know how I feel about leaving Alfie with a complete stranger..."
Amelia waved her hand, "Oh don't worry, dear. He'll be in safe hands. My sister is a nanny. It's her job."
Castiel nodded, believing her. She still held Alfie, rocking him back and forth to sleep. Watching her made him miss Daphne. Although, she never cared for him, he imagined if she ever would have it'd look just like that. Call it a mother's touch. Now, Alfie could never have that... It was just a moment of sympathy.
Amelia stated, "My sister should be here soon so we can get going! Already starting to get dark outside!"
Samuel handed Thomas to Dean and said, "Here, hold him while I get your things."
Dean opened his mouth to object, but Samuel was already out the door before he could even say a single word. He looked down at Thomas in his arms. Thomas smiled up at him, then quickly hid his face with the blanket he held in his arms. Dean could feel the tears beginning to well, realizing everything he's been missing in Samuel's life.
Samuel came back inside with their things and dropped them to the ground, noticing a tear falling from Dean's cheek. He asked, "Dean, is something wrong?"
Dean looked up at his brother, "It's just I've missed so much of your life...I am unbelievably and incredibly sorry."
"Dean, it's completely okay. You're here now at least."
There was a knock at the door and Amelia reached for the doorknob, shifting Alfie to one arm. She greeted her sister with a loud rejoice and they all were off childrenless for the night. Dean and Castiel filed into their own car and Samuel and Amelia into theirs. Dean drove behind Samuel, following them to the restaurant. Castiel said, "They're a nice family, don't chya think?"
Dean nodded, "A very nice family. Nicer than him and I ever had."
Castiel reached over to hold Dean's hand reassuringly. He spoke softly, "You're in my little family now."
Dean crookedly smiled, still focusing on the road until they stopped in front of a building with a large neon sign blinking in front, "Blue Lace," ironically in the hue of purple.
Dean could hear the classical music spilling out of the building. He bit his lip nervously. Castiel whispered, "What's wrong?"
"This restaurant might frown upon queers. Most people do."
Castiel wrapped his arm around Dean's waist and pulled him close. Samuel squeezed his brother's shoulder with a kind smile to show it was going to be okay.
They walked inside where Samuel spoke to the host and then, they brought them to a round table decorated with a white cloth and a candle. Dean looked around the high ceiling room. Chandeliers hung low with crystals sparkling and a blue lace wallpaper decorated the walls with a golden trim. It was very classy, maybe a little too classy for Dean's taste.
The waiter came by to take their order, but they all had ordered the same thing anyways. Dean didn't have a clue what to order since every meal's name was in French. He ordered what Cas ordered and that just so happened to be what both Samuel and Amelia were to order.
Amelia rested her chin on her folded hands and asked, "So, how did you two meet?"
Castiel explained, "When my wife had gone missing, I came to Detective Winchester here," he pointed his thumb over in Dean's direction.
She smiled, "I heard Dean was on The Demon's case! Please tell me about that!"
Dean's face went red and he clammed up. Normally, people asking him about his line of work didn't phase him, but in front of his brother, his brother's wife, and love interest was a different story.
Samuel chuckled, "I apologize for her. She's always been interested in our line of work since the very day I met her."
Dean smiled nervously and guiltily. "It's been a difficult case to work on. I'll say that. I can't say too much though due to confidentiality rules. But there's not much to say anyways. We don't have any leads on who the killer might be, it's strange. As if he's disappeared. He does good work or so we say since we haven't found any evidence whatsoever. Daphne was the first body we found for any evidence."
Castiel pushed his chair back abruptly and stood up, storming towards the hall. Dean gave a confused look to Samuel and Samuel gave a nod as a signal to go after him. Dean stood up and followed in the direction Castiel had gone. He caught him in the long corridor. He was slumped against the wall, crying.
Dean walked over and crouched down beside him. He questioned, "Castiel, what's wrong?"
Castiel slapped him on the arm and spoke between sobs, "You spoke of her like she's just part of this moronic case. She's not just a body for your evidence! She was a person! The mother of my child!"
Dean held Castiel's hand gently. "I realize that, I know that, dreamboat. I'm sorry I just wasn't paying attention to what I was saying. You know how work stresses me out. I can't stand talking about it."
He pulled Castiel up to his feet with both hands. Castiel nodded, "You're right. I'm sorry I over reacted. It just still hurts, you know? The pain doesn't get any easier like they say it does. I still miss her. Of course, I have you and I adore you. But sometimes, I guess I break down...Let's go back in there before we make any bigger fools of ourselves."
They walked back into the dining room together. Amelia and Samuel didn't dare ask what had just occurred, instead it was silent. The kind of uncomfortable silence that felt as if it wouldn't end.
Dean had finally spoken after a moment of dreadful muteness, "So, Sammy, how's work been? How's life in general, Ace?"
Samuel's eyes lit up that Dean was actually taking interest in his life. That hadn't happened before in his life. Dean was genuinely interested, actually missing his brother. Dean felt guilty for missing such a huge chunk of his life just to pursue this madness and insanity he contained inside. If only Samuel or Castiel knew what Dean had done. They'd never forgive him, especially Castiel. Dean was a monster, still is. That doesn't just go away. He'd regret it for the rest of his life, the sickness he had and the things he had done and will do in the near future. It was all regretful.
Their meals came and went, making even more small talk about the war going on throughout the world and complaining about rationing. No one spoke of The Demon again, knowing it was a touchy subject.,
After a decadent dessert and paying for a pretty high bill, they walked next door to the Rhythm Club for dancing. Dean lead Castiel in and Castiel whispered, "I'm still nervous to dance."
As soon as they stepped foot into the large room, Dean pulled him close and positioned himself into the slow dancing form as everyone else performed other dance moves, including Samuel and Amelia.
Dean enjoyed being different from the rest of them. A live band played with a phenomenal male singer at the front of the room. Dean careened closer to the band as everyone around them swing danced. Dean hopped up onto the stage and whispered into the singer's ear. The singer nodded with a smile and echoed into the microphone, "Grab your special dreamboat. We're going to slow things down with a song from an upcoming artist Frank Sinatra."
Dean jumped down and pulled Castiel close as the song began. He held Castiel's waist with Castiel's hand on his shoulder and then holding their opposing hands together. They swayed back and forth. Dean hummed against Castiel's neck to the introduction of the song. Castiel rested his head on Dean's shoulder and smiled happily. "It's our song," Castiel voiced.
"Only for you, my darling dreamboat."
Castiel blurted, "I'm in love with you, Dean."
Castiel tensed when there was no immediate reply. Dean smiled against Castiel's skin and continued to rock side to side. He sang, "You give me your arms and your arms are like angel wings."
Dean continued humming, vibrating against Castiel's neck. Castiel relaxed against his touch. Dean began singing once again, "You give me your love and your love is a melody. Deep in my heart I will carry this song with me. You bring a love so divine. All this is mine and heaven too. I'm in love with you too, dreamboat."
Castiel pulled away to look at Dean with worry in his eyes that he wasn't being truthful, "You really mean it?"
Dean grinned and pulled Castiel close again for their lips to connect. Then, he whispered, hot breath against Castiel's lips, "Does that answer your question?"
Castiel sighed happily, "I cannot wait until I get to make love with you."
"The second we arrive home, I will have my way with you," Dean assured.
La Vie En Rose by Louis Armstrong played by the band now. Dean closed his eyes, "Oh how I adore this song. Listen to that trumpet."
Castiel leaned his head against Dean's shoulder with his eyes closed. They both swayed in place with their eyes shut, letting the song and only themselves become their whole world.
Dean's head rested on Castiel's and sang softly, "Hold me close and hold me fast. The magic spell you cast, this is la vie en rose. When you kiss me, heaven sighs. And though I close my eyes, I see la vie en rose. When you press me to your heart, I'm in a world apart; a world where roses bloom. And when you speak, angels sing from above. Everyday words seem to turn into love songs. Give your heart and soul to me and life will always be la vie en rose."
Castiel mused, "I give my heart and soul to you."
"Then, life will always be la vie en rose, my angel," Dean voiced back.
