Undercover
Jungkook's POV-
"I have to go now. He doesn't have anywhere to go and she is after him."
I stare at my mother as I search her face with concerned eyes. It seems that the sadness that was swimming through her irises before is gone and has been replaced determination.
She is determined to keep the ones she loves safe, and that isn't just myself.
With a soft sigh I continue to search her eyes. "Is he my father's brother that you would tell me stories about?"
Her eyes soften and with a small smile she nods. "They weren't brother's by blood, but they were best friends. The three of us were so close..."
She stops speaking as she averts her eyes from mine and glances at where everyone is spread out around the room.
I do the same and my eyes instinctively fall on where Yoongi and Tae are speaking off towards the edge of the room.
Yoongi doesn't look very happy with whatever Tae has said, but then again the common theme of the day hasn't been sharing necessarily good news.
When I look back at my mother she looks a bit more distressed. Worried. Unsure.
I want to offer her words of comfort that will help her know how she isn't alone and that I support her, but the words of assurance won't come out.
When I open my mouth to speak the only things that comes out is, "I don't understand."
"We need to talk Bunny." She says with a nervous hesitance in her voice before she turn to where Tae and Yoongi are stood.
"Taehyungie?" She calls out.
He turns from where he has been talking to Yoongi with a questioning expression, Yoongi on the other hand continues to stare at the ground looking extremely anxious.
Tae rushes over to where my mother and I are sat and crouches down to our level.
"Yes?"
"Taehyung, would Bunny and I be able to talk somewhere in private?"
He pouts his lips in thought before his face brightens and he stands up. "I'll be right back."
My mother and I watch as he walks over to where Namjoon and Jin have sat back down in the corner of the sectional.
He leans down a little to speak lowly with the two and, although Namjoon and Jin both avoid looking directly at my mother (they still don't know exactly where they stand with her all these years later and truthfully neither do I) before Namjoon nods at whatever Tae has said with a smile.
Tae turns back and walks the short distance back to my mother and I. Once he is stood over us he offers his hand out to my mother to help her stand up.
"If it's alright with you" he says with his eyes fixed on my mother's. "Namjoon's studio is just around the corner from here and he said you can use it."
My mother moves her eyes to where Jin and Namjoon are sat. Whatever hints of smiles the two had were immediately wiped from their expressions as they avert their gazes to their laps from her stare.
We may not know where they stand, but it is rather clear that they have not been forgiven by her.
She offers a short, halfhearted "Thank you" to Namjoon and takes Tae's hand as he helps her stand. Once she is stood Tae reaches out and carefully helps me stand as my side is still very sore.
As Tae is leading my mother and I to the door I break away from them and go to where Yoongi is in the corner now speaking with Chanyeol.
His back is to me so I reached out and tap his shoulder.
My breath nearly leaves my lungs when he turns and I see the look in his eyes. His eyes are showing so much anxiety and fear.
But what is he so scared of? Is he nervous for Hyuk? I'm sure he'll be okay. Hyuk knows Irene. He probably knows all of her tricks.
I smile softly hoping it will lift his spirits a little. "Yooni, don't worry about-"
Before I can finish he engulfs me in a tight hug.
I'm confused at the gesture, but I return the hug after only a moments hesitation, even though it hurts like a hell.
As we stand hugging I continue with what I was going to say. "Yooni don't worry about Hyuk. I'm sure he'll be okay."
He pulls away from me before he looks over my shoulder towards the door. I turn as well and see that Tae and my mother are waiting for me.
I turn back to him, placing a hand on his cheek. "My mother asked that she and I talk privately, just the two of us, so we are going to Namjoon's studio. I will have my phone with me so I'll text you when I'm done."
His eyes begin to tear up and I don't understand why, but he places his hand over mine as it is rested on his cheek and smiles. "Okay Love. I hope you get all of your questions answered and you take your time."
As he is speaking he had a unidentifiable sadness in his eyes.
He slowly lowers brings his fingers around my hand on his cheek and brings our now interlocked hands to his lips and gives it a kiss.
"I love you and I'll see you soon."
I see him gulp before he nods. "Of course. I'll see you soon."
I study his face before I turn away. Why does he sounds so sad? I won't be gone for long.
As I'm walking to the door my mother reaches her hand out to me and as the two of us walk out the door Tae is holding open for us and down the hall I notice that after we get a few meters away I haven't heard the door click shut yet.
I turn to look back and see that Yoongi is stood in front of Tae and Tae is looking at him with a very serious face as he nods. I watch as Tae places a hand on Yoongi's shoulder, giving him a pat before he turns and leaves to follow after my mother and I.
As he walks to us I watch him closely. He seems normal, but just because he looks that way does not mean he is. Tae is a master of down playing and a giving, as everyone that knows him is aware.
"Tae, is everything okay?"
"Of course. He just wants me to come back to the room with everyone after I bring you two to Namjoon's studio." He smiles.
After that the walk is silent until we finally get to the room.
Tae gets the door unlocked and opens it for my mother and I to sit.
I take a step inside and sit in the couch and as I'm sitting I see my mother is still by the door and Tae is speaking into her ear as she nods.
It's not a long conversation before she gives a last nod and a thank you and he shuts door as she come to the couch and sits beside me.
"Have you and Namjoonie made up?" She asks as she glancing around the room.
"Yes!" I smile brightly. "I have my Hyung back. I couldn't be more happy to have both he and Jin both back in my life, but you know how much I've missed him especially."
She looks at me with a surprised face. "You made up with Jin?"
I slowly nod. "I realized that I wasn't looking at what happened from his perspective. Once I spoke with he and Namjoon some much needed clarification and explaining happened and it was wonderful.
"I'm not mad or sad anymore Eomma. I have all of my friends back. I feel like I'm whole again... Or at least I felt like that..." My smile drops a bit towards the end of my sentence.
My mother takes a deep breath and takes my hands in hers as she turns her body so that she is more fully facing me.
After she takes a few deep breaths and I do the same she asks, "Where would you like me to start Bunny?"
I press my lips together. Honestly, I don't know why I want her to start, all I know is there is a lot that needs to be said.
I guess I'll start with the obvious.
"How do you know Hyuk?"
"He and your father had been friends since they were younger. They were inseparable. Hyuk came from a very prominent military family and... so did I. I actually met Hyuk before I met your father.
"I knew him casually from different military dinners and dinner parties among the higher ranking officers and their families. Hyuk and I got along very well, but outside of those occasional events I didn't really see him.
"At one of these dinners though he had brought his friend, your father, and the moment we saw each other it was like how they describe in the films.
"The world around us disappeared and we couldn't look away from each other. Once your father and I started dating not long after the night we'd meet, the three of us got even closer."
She pauses after she speaks, I'm sure in anticipation for what she knows I'm going to ask.
"You both have prominent military families?"
She nods. "My father is a General and his father was a Colonel and he even had a brother that was a Lieutenant Colonal. We grew up in strong military families."
"A General in the army..." I tilt my head as I ask. "Did he send that letter to Irene?"
"Yes he did."
"Why would he do that? Did you ask him to?"
I am grateful that he did, but how did he know about Irene? Did my mother tell him about what she was doing? Does she keep in contact with him?
She must. I mean, there's no other way he would know if my mother hadn't kept him in the loop, so maybe that's a stupid question.
"I didn't ask him but he was aware of what Irene was up to and he wanted to help."
Okay. That makes sense. If I had a Grandson and I found out he was in danger and I had the means to help somehow, I would. I wish I could thank him, but I don't even know who he is.
"Why have I never met-" suddenly I remember back to my childhood. The man that would come and visit until one day he stopped.
"Your father, my Grandfather, he used to come and visit us." I narrow my eyes at her.
She nods as she keeps her eyes stuck on me. "Yes."
"Why did he stop? Did he really go to work overseas?"
I have been wondering this questions for over ten years. I never understood why all of the sudden he just stopped coming. It's not like he would come everyday, but he always made sure to come for holidays, then after my sixth birthday I never saw him again.
When I would ask my mother she said that he had to move overseas for work and that he would come visit again someday, but someday never came.
She exhales shakily. "No."
"Okay, so why did he stop visiting?"
"H-his... he was almost followed. So it became too dangerous."
My eyes double in size at this. "Dangerous for him to visit us? In Busan?"
"Yes. There are some things you don't know Bunny. But before I tell you I want you to know that everything I have done was for your protection. I've tried so hard to keep you, to keep us, out of danger... but I still ended up failing." Her bottom lip begins to tremble as she breaks eye contact with me and looks down at her lap.
She is quiet as she keeps her head down and I sit waiting for her to start with what she needs to tell me.
"His name isn't Jung Hyuk... and my name isn't Jeon Taehee. Your father, myself and Hyuk were put into witness protection and given new identities after an undercover mission your father and Hyuk, or Yonjun as I knew him, went wrong and their true identities were discovered."
