Chapter Fifteen

"Do you have to go to work today?" I sat on the hotel bed, finishing the vanilla yogurt. I licked the spoon clean and when I noticed him watching me I raised an eyebrow before throwing the plastic in the trashcan.

"No" He responded quietly, tying the towel around his waist. His hair was damp and whatever body wash he used made him smell divine.

He scowled, "I don't have any fresh clothes"

"Obviously" I responded. He had been the one who dragged me to this dumb hotel. He picked up his clothes from yesterday then picked up a can of deodorant and sprayed it all over them.

I began coughing and held my nose, glaring up at him, "Do that in the bathroom! I can't breath, Zac!"

He looked down to me, blinking momentarily before chuckling at my reaction, "It is kind of strong"

"Are you staying with me all day today?" I asked quietly and his brow furrowed. He studied me before a small smile appeared on his face, "What, you're becoming attached to me?"

"Answer" I responded sharply, "Or are you going off to do some sneaky business again?"

His expression changed when he realized what I was talking about. His eyes left my face and his grip on the deodorant tightened before he set it down,"Hollie. You don't need to worry about any of that"

"Yes, I do Zac. Remember when you ended up in hospital because of it?"

"I was a kid"

"No you weren't, you were like seventeen, I forget but you weren't a kid"

"It's run differently now"

"Noir is not a nice person, he's just as bad as the last guy. I'm going to castrate Josh myself if he gets you tied up in this sort of thing"

He pulled on his top and barely offered me a glance, "I'll be fine"

"I'm serious, I'll go to them myself"

"No you won't"

"Want to bet?"

"No"

"Then don't do anything stupid"

"I'm not, I'm just loaning Josh money"

"Then loan it to him by himself, you don't have to go get involved, let him come collect it"

"Pack your bags, Hollie" He said, "I'll check us out" And without another word he left the room. I glared after him, frustrated with how he acted with this whole thing, as if it was nothing.

I was about to fall back on the bed with a groan before my eyes landed on a phone, Zac's phone.

I didn't even hesitate. I ran over to it and picked it up, thanking the stars when it was still unlocked. I quickly went to his contacts and scanned for the name 'josh'.

There were two...

I pulled out my old phone and put both numbers into my phone before then adding the latest two people he was texting. I assume done of them might be Noir since that was the last person he was dealing with.

I regretted smashing my new phone now, iPhone's weren't cheap.

Now I had to use an old Android phone I used before I saved up enough and frankly, it was terrible. It lagged and overheated way too much.

My hands were shaking as I locked his phone and threw it down back onto the counter before rushing back to my place on the bed. Only a minute later the door opened and he walked back in.

"I told you to pack your bag, Hol-" His sentence cut off when he looked up at me, "Why are you red...?"

"I'm not"

"Your voice is shaking"

"No" I made sure my sentence was cut short so he wouldn't be able to tell. It was the worst thing about being best friends with him, he noticed almost anything. He had always been like this.

"What's wrong?" He glanced around the room curiously, "Did you break something?"

"No, of course I didn't" I scowled, "I just.. Max popped into my mind" I bit my lip at his name. I just wanted to be distracted forever and get him off my mind but even the word made me on the verge of a breakdown.

It felt like Zac was staring at me for way too long but finally he just nodded his head, "Okay"

He didn't believe me...

Otherwise he'd comfort me and say everything was going to be alright. He walked over and picked his phone up and my heart started beating, hoping there was no evidence I had been on it.

Thankfully he shoved it into his back pocket after looking over it. I quickly hopped out of bed and ran over to pack my bags. My bag was basically packed so all I had to do was throw in the clothes I had worn yesterday.

"I'm ready" I said after a minute. He was sitting on the chair looking out the window then nodded his head. He walked over and took the suitcase from my hand before wheeling it outside.

I nibbled my lip nervously, not enjoying how quiet he was being.

"You're acting weird" I said, making sure he knew how uncomfortable I felt right now. I tried to pull my suitcase from him so I could wheel it but he held tightly. I didn't like how he was acting, it was almost the silent treatment.

"Wait, where are we going?"

"My place"

"I told you-"

"Do you really want to be left alone?"

"I'll be with my parents"

"Have you even rang them? Do they even know you plan to come?"

"Well, no..."

"Do they have a room made up?"

"No..."

"Then my place it is. It's better to have company than be alone, you know it yourself that that's true" The elevator brought us to the ground floor. Zac handed in our room key and I noted it was a different girl at the desk than yesterday.

We walked in silence, to my dismay, to the car park. I hopped into the passenger seat while Zac brought my suitcase to the boot of the car, "We'll get the rest of your things tomorrow" He said when he got into the driver's seat.

I didn't respond to that. I just wished I could rewind everything and stop Max from cheating, so things could go back to normal.

"Why are you acting so shady?" I asked.

"Shady?"

"Real dull and silent"

"I'm just thinking"

"About what?" I frowned, glancing over to him. I copped on he was watching me and it made all my muscles tense up. Did he know? Had I left evidence on his phone?

"Why you're lying to me"

"I'm not lying to you"

"Yes you are, I know you Hollie"

"No you don't"

"Yes I do"

"No, Zac, you don't. I thought I knew you too but guess who was wrong?"

"You do know me"

"I didn't think you were so stupid to get involved in this stuff again!" I snapped, "I can't deal with this, Zac. You remember how depressed I got when you were sent into hospital last time, why are you putting me through this again?"

"Because you were happy with Max! You didn't care what I was doing, because you were starstruck but now you suddenly care"

I bit my tongue, not knowing what to say from there. He was right in that context, I had pushed him away that whole time and now I suddenly thought I could control him.

"I'm sorry" I said slowly, "Why do we only fight?"

"What?"

"We fight... non-stop. I didn't fight this much with Max"

"I don't know" He responded silently.

"Would it be better if-"

"No" He said the word quickly and firmly so i just nodded my head, "We'll get past it"

"I'm going to nap" I said, resting my head against the window. I knew I wouldn't be able to but I didn't know what else to say to Zac and I didn't want to sit in awkward silence. At least this way, if he thought I was asleep, it wouldn't be uncomfortable.

The car ride was relaxing. Unlike Max's old car, which was his pride and joy, Zac's was smooth and obviously expensive. I didn't know anything about car's so I didn't even know what type this was.

I got so lost in my thoughts that when Zac nudged me I jumped up, my heart racing. He stared at me, surprised at my reaction, "We're here"

Had I not even been taking in the scenery? When did we get here?

"I thought it would be your apartment penthouse or whatever it's called"

"This one's more private" He shrugged.

"Who even had two places?"

"My apartment is for when I need to stay over at work, it's attached to the building"

This house he brought me too was nice. There was a drive into it, with electric gates. The grass was freshly cut and flower beds made the place look magical.

It wasn't some sort of mansion, it was a nice modern house with three bedrooms. Unlike a lot of rich people, Zac used his money wisely.

Apart from loaning it to Josh who would never pay him back. I heard the gates shut behind us and I suddenly felt closed off from the outside world which felt nice.

This was nice...

"How are you feeling now?" He asked quietly.

"Good?" It came out as a question, confused as to why he was asking me this. He just nodded his head with a small smile and left the car.

I followed suit and knew he was already getting my suitcase.

"Welcome home"

I rolled my eyes at his words.

"Do you remember this place?" He asked.

"Of course I do" I responded.

When Zac and I were younger, we fell in love with this place. I told him we were going to live together here when we grew up, because it was for sale.

Of course, it had been sold by the time Zac had grown up and been able to purchase it. I didn't even want to know how he got it, probably paid the homeowners double the amount they deserved for it.

"Isn't this where we were supposed to go for our honeymoon?" He arched an eyebrow.

"No" I scowled, "We were going to Hawaii, then a cruise and then back here to live"

"You remember all that?" The corner of his lip twitched.

My own cheeks warmed when he said that so I only responded with a scowl, "Only remembered it because this was my favorite place"

"And our honeymoon?"

"Our honeymoon? I mean it's my honeymoon. That was my idea, it never had to be with you" I stuck my tongue out.

"I remember you saying it would be ours"

"That's before I realized how annoying you were and there were much better men out in the world" I shrugged, acting cocky. He seemed to hesitate for a moment before laughing.

I felt my phone buzz in my pocket causing my brow to furrow then remind me of my current task.

It made my stomach turn over...

Only I would be dumb enough to set up a meeting with a notorious gang..
