Enigma
Enigma: A person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand
Keith pov
I shut the door quietly after I jokingly pushed Lance out.
I turned around and looked around the empty house.
No one else is awake yet.
I sighed and cracked my knuckles.
I paced around the living room for a bit then into the kitchen. I got a glass of water and drank it slowly while starring out the window leading to the back yard.
Something feels...off.
I can't pinpoint it.
This day isn't any different from all the other days when Lance has left. So why do I feel so weird?
I shrugged it off, trying not to draw my attention to the feeling. I went back upstairs to my room and opened the blinds and pushed open my window a crack.
I tidied my room up a bit. The few scattered items of clothing on the floor, tangled earbuds, a few empty water bottles, ect.
My room was now clean. It felt wrong. I generally like having things tidy. Why does it feel wrong? I guess it feels empty without Lance.
My phone buzzed with a message from him: "I'm home now"
I ignored it and tossed the phone onto my bed. I slipped on some sweatpants that were left on my floor.
I made my bed and fluffed all my pillows back up. I carefully laid down on top of the duvet.
My room fell eerily quiet. A ringing in my ears started. I rubbed my eyes and shook my head side to side. Nothing. I heard a few cars pass by and that stopped the ringing momentarily.
What time is it?
Nobody is awake yet.
Seemingly anyway.
I turned to my side and hugged my knees to my chest.
You know that feeling when you get scared or excited? When you feel butterflies in your chest and your stomach dropping?
I felt that even though nothing was happening.
What is going on??
I'm so confused as to why I'm feeling like this.
I ended up going back to sleep again. I was woken up by Christine what I'm assuming was a few hours later.
"Hey are you okay?" She said sitting on the edge of my bed putting her hand on my leg.
I don't want to worry her.
"Yeah I'm fine" I lied.
"You're usually up by now" She said. "I'm fine Christine" I mumbled.
"Okay" She said suspiciously then getting up and leaving my room.
I spent the whole day locked in my room. Lance had called me 5 times. I wasn't reading any of his texts. I really should of replied.
I heard a knock on my door.
"Come in" I said weakly.
"Something came in the mail for you" Christine said opening my door.
"I haven't ordered anything for a long time" I said sitting up and swinging my legs over the side of my bed.
"Strange" She said. I followed her downstairs and into the kitchen.
A small damaged looking white box was sat on the kitchen counter.
I looked at the top of the box.
It had my full name on it and my address.
No return address or anything leading to where it came from.
My heart was drumming in my chest.
"It has no return address" I said looking over at Christine.
"Really?" She asked walking over and looking at it.
"Hold on, Don't open it I'm getting Dane" She said hurrying off towards the back door.
Dane must be outside.
I heard her call for him.
They both came inside.
"It has no return address either" She said.
"It just showed up on the doorstep, I thought it was something Keith ordered online but he says he hasn't ordered anything in a while" She said looking nervous.
"It could be something dangerous" She said.
"Why would anyone send him anything dangerous?" Dane asked. We both just looked at him. He got a box cutter and carefully opened the box.
Inside was a something swaddled in forest green coloured cloth. Dane carefully took out the bundle and unwrapped it.
"It's a knife" He said taking out a silver coloured knife.
"That's more like a dagger Dane" Christine said. Dane looked the object over. Christine held up the cloth in front of her and a small slip of paper fell out and onto the floor. I quickly bent down and picked it up.
"This is a part of you now" Was handwritten across the paper in black pen. I felt the blood run from my face. "This is his writing" I managed to choke out before my throat closed up. "What?" Christine asked, very worried. "It-It's his writing" I whispered. They both looked at me extremely scared.
I ran upstairs and threw open my closet. I frantically rummaged through a box in the bottom of my closet.
I found it.
I ran back downstairs, almost tripping over myself.
I placed the photo down next to the note.
"Look!" I yelled tears welling up in my eyes. Christine and Dane gathered around the counter.
Dane held both the photo and the note up in both hands.
His face went white.
He looked sick.
He shakily handed them to Christine. She went silent and placed them back on the counter covering her mouth in fear.
I held them side by side myself; The photo of me, My mother, and Father the day I came home from the hospital and the note.
"Welcome home Keith" Is written on the space at bottom of the Polaroid picture.
The handwriting was identical.
"Mommy what's going on?" I heard Cole say. I turned to see him and Meenah at the base of the stairs.
"Go back upstairs honey, The grown-ups are talking" Christine managed to say. The two slowly went back upstairs.
I looked at the picture and note again.
I set them down.
I felt my legs give out.
I fell to my knees.
"Why?" I cried, hot tears beginning to roll down my face. Christine and Dane bent down on either side of me.
"Why?" I repeated.
"I was finally getting my life back together" I sobbed. Christine held my hand, she was shaking.
"How do you know for sure that it's his writing?" Dane said.
"Dane look at it! It's identical!" I screeched.
"Calm down" Christine said rubbing my back.
"How can I?! What the fuck is this? Why now? Is my dead father sending me shit from the grave? Shouldn't he be burning in hell?!" I screamed.
"It could be from another family member?" Dane suggested.
"I don't have other family. I have no uncles or aunts, No grandparents" I said rubbing my swollen eyes.
"You do have grandparents" Dane said. "Genevieve's parents wouldn't of had anything of Donovans"Christine said.
Those are my parents names.
Or my birth parents names. Christine and Dane are my real parents.
Sounds like a couple from the medieval times.
Genevieve and Donovan.
I've never said their names.
I have never spoken their names in my life.
I've only referred to them as my mother and father.
My stomach does flips whenever I hear them.
I love how they both have these fancy long names and just decide to name me Keith.
Very southern.
I guess my middle name is a bit unique and fancy.
Alavai.
Like Alibi but with a "vai" at the end.
Keith Alavai Kogane.
It just sounds stupid all together.
"This is clearly his writing" Dane said. "We know nothing about his parents. Keith, you don't even know anything about them. It's almost like they..." I cut Christine off.
"Dropped off the face of the earth?" I said finishing her sentence.
"It could of been from them?" Christine said.
"We don't even know if they're even alive anymore, let alone if they live in the U.S still" Dane said.
"I'm scared" I said.
They both helped me to my feet.
"I know honey, We are too" Christine said.
"We should go to the police" Dane said. "What? Why?" Christine gasped. "I don't like idea of a random weapon being sent to my son with no return address accompanied with a note strangely matching the handwriting of his deceased birth father!" Dane barked.
My son
That makes me a bit happier.
"I don't like it either" Christine said.
I picked up the knife and held it. It was so shiny I could see my reflection.
It is pretty.
I set it down.
"Why can't everything just go well for me? Why can I never be happy? Why can I never find peace" I said.
I sat down at a chair at the breakfast bar. I rested my chin on my knee.
"You don't need this" Christine said softly putting a hand on my shoulder.
"I want Lance" I mumbled.
"Hm?" Christine asked. She didn't hear me.
"I want Lance" I said a bit louder.
"You could use him right now. He can connect with you better than we can" Dane commented.
"He's been here for days though" I said. "I don't want you doing anything...stupid. We can't keep an eye on you all night. Lance I know will help keep you safe" Christine said.
Lance pov
I paced back and forth in my room. I could hear the soft rumble of the washing machine downstairs.
I picked at the edges of my fingernails nervously.
I hummed the tune of a blink 182 song to try and help calm me.
My phone was sitting facing up on my bed. I jumped when I heard its ringtone went off.
I quickly answered.
"Keith??" I cried into the phone. "Yeah?" I heard his muffled voice say. I heard him sniff.
"Are you crying?" I asked him frantically.
"I need you" He said.
"You need to back come over. Somethings come up" Keith said sniffing again.
"We just spent days together. What's up?" I asked.
"Lance...please...Just come" Keith said softly.
"Okay I'm coming" I said.
Keith hung up.
I grabbed my car keys and ran downstairs.
"Mamá, Somethings come up with Keith, I have to go!" I called.
"¡Ahora aguanta!" She snapped grabbing the collar of my shirt.
"¿Qué?" I asked.
"You have been at Keith's house for many days. What's so important?" She asked, switching back to English.
"I don't know but he sounded distressed when he called me" I said trying to wiggle from her grip.
"This better be important. Your family is more important than your boyfriend Lance" She scolded letting go of me.
"I know mamá, I will be back later tonight I promise" I said.
She huffed and allowed me to go.
I quickly shoved my running shoes on and ran out the door, slamming if behind me.
I fumbled with my keys as I started up my car and sped out of the driveway.
Rain suddenly began to pelt my windshield. It hasn't rained in almost 3 months.
This is ominous.
When I got into the city I had to turn my windshield wipers on.
Shit I need gas.
I slammed on my breaks as I almost passed a gas station. I earned a loud angry honk from the truck behind me.
I didn't bring a jacket fuck.
It's pouring out.
I hesitantly parked next to one of the gas pumps and got out. The stupid giant metal canopy thing above all the gas pumps dosen't work well and some water was dripping onto my back.
I was impatiently waiting for my tank to fill up. I was watching the little numbers on the pump go up.
Now that clouds were covering the sky it seems so much darker. It's around 8 pm now. Cars were flying by on the road I just came off of.
The tank was full and I noticed the credit card option for payment was out of order. A small paper sign was over it. "Fuck" I muttered.
I took the nozzle thing out of my car and hooked it back up to the pump. I went inside the gas stations store.
I shook the water off my hair and ran my hand through it.
I ended up grabbing 3 different bags of Cheetos for Keith. I can't remember what flavour he said was his favourite so I got 3 different ones. I paid for my gas and the food. I received a weird look from the cashier. She put the three bags into a plastic one and handed it to me with a receipt. I threw the bag into the passenger seat and headed off.
Keith pov
Hurry up Lance. I thought as I sat on the couch.
"Oh hey it's raining" Dane said looking out the backyard window.
"Really?" I asked. I turned my head and sure enough; rain drops were forming on the window and running down.
Cole and Meenah were down in the living room with me now. They surprisingly didn't ask what the dagger was and didn't ask what was going on earlier.
"Can we order pizza?" Meenah asked. "Do you guys want pizza?" Dane asked the rest of us.
"Yes please" Cole said.
"I'm fine with that" I replied. Christine nodded in agreement with the rest of us.
Dane ordered a few pizzas and one with lactose free cheese for me. I mean it's a bit late for supper but that's fine.
Having Meenah and Cole in the room really brightened the mood.
I've said lots before that I despise kids and whenever I'm in the room with another child I don't know my mood is drained but these kids are so lively and nice and good people. Unlike most kids who are gross, sticky and loud.
Christine and Dane were both eyeing me like hawks and are watching over my every move. I shifted in my seat on the couch. I glanced over at the tv which was playing some kind of cartoon. I was still wearing my soft cuddly sweatpants from earlier. With baby blue fluffy socks now that my feet are cold. I heard the doorbell ring.
It could either be Lance or the pizza delivery person.
I shot up, not taking my chances and hurried over to the door.
Thankfully it was Lance.
I threw my arms around him before he even got into the house. He was damp from the rain outside. I pulled him in and shut the door.
"Are you okay?" Lance asked.
I didn't reply.
"You're all wet" I said.
"Hehe yeah" Lance replied.
"I'll get you a towel" I said. Lance took his wet shoes off and pushed them off to the side.
I went into the laundry room and got him a towel. He draped it around his neck.
"I brought you shit" He said holding out a plastic 7-11 bag.
"I forgot what flavour of Cheetos were your favourite so I got three kinds" Lance said smiling weakly.
"I don't deserve you" I said.
We made our way into the kitchen. Lance put the bag on the counter and began to dry his wet hair.
"Hi Lance" Christine said waving. He smiled and waved back.
"What's this?" He asked pointing to the godforsaken dagger.
"That's the thing...That's why I asked you to come here" I trailed off.
I looked at Dane, my eyes begging him to tell Lance so I don't have too.
Dane cleared his throat.
"This showed up here today. It's a dagger. It came with a note that's handwriting is identical to Keith's birth fathers and it came with no return address. We don't know how it got here or where it came from" Dane explained. Lance looked scared.
"That's scary" He said looking at the dagger more intently.
"We think it's from his side of the family of something but we don't know for sure" Christine put in.
"Well who could of sent it? I know the story of both sets of grandparents" Lance said drying his face.
"We don't know who sent it. If it was one of the sets of grandparents...we're leaning more towards Donovan's parents; but how would they of gotten our address? They have never met Keith and no one has heard from them in almost 18 years. Not even the police" Christine said.
"Donovan...?" Lance questioned.
"It's his birthfathers name" Dane said. "Keith has never spoken of it"
"Well that understandable" Lance said. "It's quite strange indeed and Keith is obviously very upset. I mean we are too but this dosen't affect us as near as much as him" Christine said leaning against the counter.
"You don't need this" Lance said rubbing my lower back. I crossed my arms and looked at the flood.
"He's been very distraught almost all day. Even before this came into play. He just really needs you here right now Lance" Christine said putting a hand on his shoulder.
"That's my duty as the best boyfriend in the world" Lance announced triumphantly. I chuckled a bit.
"This is all confusing so I don't really care" Meenah piped up.
"That's good! It has nothing to do with you and that's good that you don't care" I said. Meenah nodded.
"He just needs some hugs, cuddles, and snuggles to make him feel better" Meenah chirped.
"Oh I can do that" Lance replied giving me a tight hug from behind.
The doorbell then rang and Dane ran over to get it.
"I paid the poor guy extra for having to come out here in the rain" Dane said brining the boxes in.
"We got special pizza for me with lactose free cheese" I said.
"You've gotta try it, it's really good" I added.
Dane and Christine let everyone eat in the living room. (The one across from the kitchen where we've been) This has never been an option. We're never allowed to do this. Me and Lance sat on the loveseat while the other four sat on the bigger couch. Cole put on a movie for everyone to watch.
"I can't even taste the difference!" Lance said after taking a bite from a lactose free slice.
"It's good huh?" I asked. Lance nodded.
We eventually shut the lights off after we were done eating to see the tv better.
I wasn't even paying attention. Lance was stroking my hair and I was leaning against him.
Lance pov
Keith had fallen asleep. I was stroking his hair carefully. He always looks like an angel when he sleeps. I chuckled at him.
"Is he asleep?" I heard Christine whisper to me. I nodded smiling. She leaned over to look at him.
"Good job" She said to me, giving me a thumbs up.
My other arm was around Keith so I could hold him closer.
His shirt was riding up a bit so I put my hand on the exposed skin and rubbed his side gently.
Meenah got up to get something to drink.
"Is he sleeping?" She asked me. I nodded again. She smiled cheerfully. I looked back at the tv. I hadn't even been really paying attention. The movie was some kind of scooby doo flick.
"I'm going to take him upstairs" I said to Christine.
I kissed Keith's cheeks a few times. He stirred and opened his eyes.
"Come on babe let's go to bed" I said to him. Keith rubbed his eyes.
"Mmkay" he mumbled. I helped him upstairs. He made a stop in the bathroom to wash his hands. Can't go longer than 45 minutes without washing your hands oh no!!
Keith just likes to be clean.
I made sure he got into bed before I stepped outside his room and called my mom.
I left Keith's door open a crack. I stood in the almost pitch black hallway and dialled my mother's number. The phone rang a few times before she answered.
"Hello?" She said sleepily.
"Hi Mamá, I'm staying at Keith's again. I know I'm supposed to be home now but something pretty significant has gone down and he really needs me tonight" I explained. She was quiet for a few seconds.
"I'm not going to ask because it's none of my business but you sound concerned and I know you never break promises. I trust you Lance. Be good and keep him safe" My mother said.
"I will Mamá. Buenas noches" I said. "Te amo" She said and hung up. I put my phone into my pocket and slipped into the bathroom to wash my hands.
I know Keith likes it best when my hands are clean before I cuddle him. He hasn't been on my ass about it lately so I've gotten away scoff free for a while. I shut the bathroom light off when I was done and I crept back to his room in almost total blackness. I shut the door behind me quietly as I possibly could.
I grabbed my keys and phone from my pockets before I undid my belt and took my pants off, pushing them to the side of the bed out of the way. I checked my phone for any notifications.
A single like and a single comment on Instagram from Pidge.
Howtousername liked your post.
Howtousername commented: This is gayest shit I've ever seen :')
Pidge liked and commented on a photo I'd posted of me and Keith the other day. We were in the bathroom and Keith had turned around to pick lint balls off my shirt and I quickly whipped my phone out, put my hand on his ass and took a mirror picture. He had no idea until the next day when he saw it. Keith wasn't happy and posted a comment the same day.
K_Kogayne commented: I hate you so much you sneaky little bitch!
Keith has said to me that he hates it when people pronounce his last name as "Ko-Gayne" and not the proper "Kaw-Ga-Nay" but yet the fucker made his username a PUN out of the mispronunciation of his last name. I can't believe him sometimes.
I smiled at Pidge's comment, liked it and shut my phone off, putting my keys on top of it, then put the stack on Keith's nightstand next to his phone. I took my shirt off like I usually do and tossed it next to my jeans.
"You're sleepy huh?" I asked Keith quietly.
"Yeah" He whispered. He was already tucked nice and snug under his duvet. "You need some rest" I said getting in next to him.
"You do too!" He commented.
"Yeah but not as much as you" I objected. Keith agreed.
"Goodnight, I love you so much" I whispered and kissed him. Keith smiled weakly and shut his eyes. A quick and muffled
"Iloveyoutoo" escaped his lips as he rolled over to his proper right side.
