Chapter 25
"Where do we go?"
"My house."
"Clint, no," I snapped. "We can't do that."
The breaks of a car screeched outside the building, and all of our heads shot up. I picked my bag up from the floor and shoved Fortis into my pocket.
"Come on," Steve muttered, ripping the door open. "We're going upstairs, we just need to get out of the building."
We rushed out of the apartment, immediately heading towards the stairs. Suddenly, there was a loud crashing noise from downstairs and the sound of elephant like footsteps.
"Go!" Bucky hissed, pushing me in front of him.
I stepped back, letting Clint, Steve, Sam, and Wanda run up the stairs. Bucky gave me a stern look as I sidestepped him and walked over to the stairs. I pulled my gun from the back of my jeans and aimed it down the stairs.
"I'll hold them off. I've got all sorts of shit in this bag, I can handle it."
"Then I'm staying with you!" He protested, yanking his own gun from his back.
"Bucky-"
"MOVE!"
He grabbed my waist suddenly, and dragged me down as a bullet buried itself in the wall I'd just been standing in front of.
"Jesus Christ!" I cried, "What the fuck was that?!"
"Let's go!"
He helped me up, and I glanced down the stairs. My stomach dropped as I saw the SWAT team members flooding the building. Bucky grabbed my arm and pushed me away from the stairwell before clicking the safety off of his gun and firing it rapidly.
"Buck!" I cried out, and he ducked away from the stairs.
"I'm shooting to stop not to kill. They'll all be fine," he muttered, urging me up the stairs. "They'll be fine. Go, we only have a little bit of time."
We started up the stairs, and soon reached the top floor. There was no sign of the other guys anywhere, and I looked over at Bucky helplessly.
"We have to split up."
"No," he protested. "I'm not leaving you."
"Just until we find out which way they went," I said. "It'll be fast, Buck, I promise."
He hesitated slightly before nodding. "Fine. If you see them, tell me."
I nodded in agreement and turned to the left as Bucky turned to the right. Holding my gun in front of me, I ducked into each room, looking for Clint and his bow or Steve and his shield.
"Freeze!"
I whipped around to find a group of SWAT members standing in the doorway of the room I was in, all pointing their guns at me.
"Oh, fuck," I muttered, keeping my gun up.
"Put your weapon down!" The man who was clearly the leader called.
"You put your weapon down."
"We do not want to shoot you!"
I sighed heavily. "Well, I don't want to shoot you either."
"Cara, come on. Put your gun down."
The SWAT guys quickly parted, revealing Natasha in the hallway. My heart sunk at the sight of her aiming her gun at me. I cleared my throat quickly and rose my eyebrows at her.
"Little dramatic, aren't we?"
She didn't react. "Cara, it's over. Come on, you know this is ridiculous."
A plan began to hatch in my mind, and I silently prayed that it would work. I slowly stuck my gun back into my waistband and put my hands up. As my hands passed my pockets, I discreetly grabbed Fortis, and pushed it up into my sleeve.
"You're right," I said quietly as the majority of them lowered their guns. "This is ridiculous."
As soon as the words left my mouth, I flicked my wrist out, and launched myself at them. I immediately went for their guns, kicking and smacking them with Fortis. Natasha moved to stop me, but I was too fast. Without even thinking about it, I hit the small button on Fortis's handle. Electricity shot through the rod, and she quickly hit the ground. I swung Fortis back around, hitting each of the SWAT members in the gut. They all fell.
I began walking down the hallway, pulling my gun again.
"Bucky!" I cried.
"Cara, run!"
My feet began moving faster as I ran down the hallway, searching frantically for Bucky. There were more footsteps from downstairs, but I didn't even look back. I glanced to the left and skidded to a stop when I saw the glint of a familiar metal arm. I rushed in and slammed the door behind me, my eyes darting around the room. Bucky stood by a broken window, broken glass surrounding his feet.
"They went out this way and they aren't being followed. Jump into the next building, you'll find them," he said, knocking more glass from the window. "Cara, you run as fast as you can, and do not look back."
"No!" I protested. "Bucky, if they find you, they'll kill you. Tony won't hurt me. Not as bad as he'll hurt you, at least."
"Cara-"
"No! You go, I'll hold them off!"
"I-"
"You know how to disappear, if you don't find them you've got that. I don't."
"Just-"
"I'll be right after you," I cut him off. "I promise."
He rushed over and kissed me suddenly, leaving my mouth stinging.
"I love you," he whispered, "so much."
I urged him towards the window and squeezed his shoulder quickly. "I love you more."
The door flew open suddenly and Bucky quickly jumped out the window. I whipped around instantly, and aimed my gun at the person who opened the door. I felt all the blood drain from my face, and tears suddenly welled in my eyes.
Tony stood in the doorway, the mask of his suit up, staring straight at me. I pursed my lips as my hand shook, and I tried to keep my gun steady.
"Didn't think of what it would be like to really do this, did you?" He said quietly.
"Please, just let us go. We didn't want this."
"You can come with me now, or make this difficult."
"Tony," I breathed. "Tony don't do this. I'm your sister."
Tony slowly raised his palm, and my heart pounded throughout my entire body.
"I don't have a sister anymore."
Suddenly, he pushed his arm forward, sending a ball of energy flying at me. Before I could register what was happening, I flew backwards into the wall, my head smacking right into the windowsill.
Everything went black.
BUCKY POV
I jumped out the window and grunted as my body hit the pavement of the parking garage across the street from the apartment building. Immediately, I sprang up and turned back to where I'd come from. I kneeled down and propped my gun over the building's ledge; my position disgustingly familiar. I could see Cara standing there, her eyes and gun trained on whoever was in the doorway. Suddenly, she flew backwards and slammed into the wall with a sickening bang.
"Cara!" I roared and flew to my feet before I could stop myself. "No!"
My entire body shook as I stared at the window, praying that she would stand up, jump out the window, and run away with me to find the others.
She didn't.
Tony appeared in the window suddenly, his eyes meeting mine instantly. The mask on his suit snapped over his face as he began flying towards me, and I quickly turned and began sprinting. I quickly realized that I wasn't going to be able to outrun the soup can, and I ripped my gun from my back. I turned around and kneeled as he he kept flying right over my head. As he began turning back around, I shot at his feet, knocking out his rocket boot things. Tony fell to the ground and I was instantly standing over him. He swung his arm out, knocking me off balance, and stood as I stumbled slightly.
He retracted his mask and narrowed his eyes at me. "You're bold, aren't you? Taking me on all alone."
I ignored his comment and stepped forward slightly, my grip on my gun tightening. "Where is she?"
"None of your business."
My anger was building even more, and I struggled to control myself as he looked at me smugly.
"If you hurt her," I growled, "I swear to god, I'll rip you out of that goddamn suit and throw you off this fucking building."
"Ooh, feisty," he smirked slightly.
I snapped.
A look of total shock struck Tony's face as I ran at him, my gun up. Just as I clicked the safety off, his wrist shot up to block it. I pulled the trigger, and watched in awe as the gun basically exploded in my hand. Tony shoved me backwards.
"Just disappear, Barnes. That's what you're good at, right?" He said lowly, walking towards me. "That's what you did after you murdered my parents, isn't it?"
I took a deep breath and regained my footing before responding. "I didn't wa-"
"You say you love her," he hissed. "And yet you drag her into this. That doesn't seem like love to me."
"You don't know what you're talking about," I spat.
His fist connected with my face suddenly, and I hit the ground hard. Before I could stand up again, his foot was pressing down on my chest and my gun clattered to the floor. Tony cocked his elbow back as I struggled to breathe.
"Is this what you did to her?" I wheezed, grabbing his ankle weakly. "To your own sister?"
"And you don't know what you're talking about."
His palm began glowing as he pushed down even harder.
"Go ahead, kill me," I hissed. "You'll only be more dead to her."
"She'll forget about you fast enough."
I struggled under the weight of his foot and panted slightly. "I wouldn't be so sure about that."
Tony drew his arm back again and I prepared for the absolute worst. Suddenly, something large and round hit Tony in the chest, and he was knocked off of me. A small box truck whipped around the corner and skidded to a stop. The hatch was wide open, with Steve standing there.
"Buck, come on!" He yelled as his shield returned to his arm.
I grabbed my gun from the ground and started running for the back of the truck. When I reached it, Steve and Clint grabbed my arms and hauled me inside. Clint slammed his hand against the wall of the truck and it immediately began speeding out of the garage. Steve shut the hatch and locked it quickly.
"What happened?" Clint asked.
I ran my hand through my hair as I started to register everything that had just occurred.
"Fuck!" I yelled, kicking a cardboard box that was on the floor of the truck. "I lost her. Jesus Christ, I lost her."
"Buck, it's not your fault," Steve said kindly, putting his hand on my shoulder.
I jerked away and swore again. "I lost her, Steve! I-I just got her back and I lost her again," my voice cracked and I felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. "I should never have let her go by herself."
I looked over at my best friend helplessly. Steve hugged me briefly, then held my shoulder at arms length.
"We're getting her back, Bucky. And when we do, she's gonna be with us till the end of the line."
