Chapter 60

The next morning, Rin was wrapping Kakashi's gash on his shoulder. "The wounds are healing very nicely, but try not to overexert yourself, okay?"

"Yeah," Kakashi answered.

I stretched out and took my hair out of its ponytail since it was getting all tangled. Obito was putting his shoes on and put some kunais in his pouch. He was oddly quiet this morning.

"Are you okay?" I ask.

"Yeah, I'm just thinking about something Minato-Sensei said last night," He replied.

"Well, if you detect anything like the Forest of Death, just let us know. This time it's crucial,"

"I will,"

Kakashi put his shirt back on. "Alright let's go,"

I quickly picked up my ninja pouch and glanced at his shoulder. "Are your wounds okay now?"

"Yes, they're a lot better now," He answers.

The walk to the border was pretty silent. Obito seemed better than yesterday, but his silence was a little concerning.

"Is this the border?" I asked, noticing the area around us had bamboo plants.

"Yes," Minato replied. "We'll be splitting up here, so do your best. The enemy we encountered yesterday was merely a lone scout. Now we should expect to find teams, so be careful."

"Let's get going then," Obito looked down. "Captain,"

Kakashi stared at him with surprise and I looked at him questioningly. He was arguing with Kakashi a lot yesterday, so this was unexpected of him. He still looked troubled though.

"Scatter," Kakashi said.

Minato took off on his own and us three followed Kakashi's lead. We ran through the bamboo forest, encountering a deep hole. This wasn't where the bridge was though.

Obito and I were both frustrated because we thought we found the bridge and we didn't.

Kakashi and Rin both looked at the map while I looked around us for any enemies who may be following.

"This way," Kakashi said and put the map away.

He led us through some swampy area and I started to sense that someone was following us now. Kakashi noticed it too and stopped walking.

Bamboo that was cut up started falling where we stood and Obito acted quickly by using his fireball jutsu to burn them.

I couldn't tell where this guy was coming from.

"Just where the hell is he? I murmur, looking around.

The sound of bamboo snapping caught my attention and I noticed a guy with an afro, who was about to launch an attack on us. Kakashi quickly moved to counter it and I heard a splash behind me, then Rin's scream.

"Rin!" I exclaimed and turned around.

I saw that another enemy apprehended her and held her like a rag doll.

"Let go of her, asshole!" I shouted.

I was about to hit him with a rasengan, but the guy with an afro pulled a kunai out and held it towards Rin, making me stop.

"Move and she's gone," He threatened.

The guy holding her spoke. "We'll be taking this one with us,"

"I won't let you!" I shouted, about to run after them.

I couldn't let something happen to Rin again. I swore to make sure nothing like the Forest of Death would never happen again.

"Wait!" Kakashi exclaimed.

I tried to run after them, but they poofed away.

"No!" Obito shouted, trying to run after them as well.

Kakashi stopped us. "Obito, Hana, do not run after them,"

Both of us stopped and moved away from the water to avoid being attacked again. Obito glared at Kakashi.

"Kakashi we can't just let them take her like that, she's our friend," I protest. "I swore I wouldn't let anything happen to her after what happened in the Forest of Death,"

"I know, but we need to continue the mission," Kakashi replied. "So we're not going after her,"

"What?!" Obito exclaimed. "Are you crazy? Do you have any idea what you're saying, Kakashi?"

"Yes," Kakashi looked down. "The three of us have to pursue this mission alone,"

What the hell is he thinking? Her life is in danger!

"And Rin?" Obito demanded. "What do we do about Rin?"

"We'll come back for her later," Kakashi replied. "Look, the enemy will want to find out what we're up to, so they won't kill her right away. Luckily, Rin is a medic so if she ends up being a prisoner of war, she'll be treated well,"

"So as long as she cares for their wounded, she'll be safe," Kakashi continued. "But we'll be in serious trouble if the enemy has time to learn about what our strategy is. They'll no doubt obtain information on the bridge and increase security there. That'll make the mission much more difficult,"

"You're only assuming Rin will be safe based on these guesses of yours," Obito retorts. "What if those guys who caught her are just nobodies who don't know any better? Look, saving Rin takes priorities over the mission and that's that,"

"Kakashi I agree with him," I added. "I may not have been close with her in the beginning, but I'm closer to her now and I can't just let a close friend of mine die like that,"

He looked down. "We are shinobi. We must carry our mission even at the expense of our comrades. That's the law. If we fail, the war will drag on and more lives than just Rin's will be lost,"

"That's just another one of your guesses," Obito pushed. "Are you really going to desert her over just a mere hypothesis? How could you be so willing to abandon someone who's been through life and death with you?"

Kakashi didn't answer.

"When we were wounded, Rin saved our lives with her medical ninjutsu," Obito continued. "Without her, we would've died in the field a long time ago,"

"Rin was just doing her job," Kakashi retorted. "Like the three of us,"

Suddenly, Obito punched him in the face, making him fall back.

"I don't like you and I never will!"

"I don't care if you do or not," Kakashi held his cheek. "I'm the captain right now. You will obey my decisions. Whatever the circumstances, one person alone makes the decision to keep the team together. That's why we have the rule that all team members will obey the captain without question,"

Obito narrowed his eyes.

"You two have no power, which is why I'm the captain of this team and you aren't-"

Obito cut him off by grabbing his shirt.

"Then why don't you try to save Rin yourself? It means you have the power to rescue your teammate. Isn't that right, Kakashi?" Obito gripped onto him shakily.

"If you vent your emotions, for even a minute, you will regret it sooner than you know. That's why shinobi have rules. That's why we're taught we must suppress our emotions. You should already know that," Kakashi stated.

"But Rin," I looked down. "She was so concerned about you that she put a special med-kit for you..."

"The med-kit and the medical ninjutsu are great systems that the Hidden Leaf has developed to increase the success rate of our missions, but like I told you guys yesterday. Better nothing at all than a useless burden," Kakashi replied.

I looked back up at him, shocked at what he just said.

"Useless burden?" Obito gripped tighter on his shirt.

Kakashi nodded slowly. "To carry out a mission, a ninja should only have tools for the task at hand. Useless things like emotions only get in the way,"

Obito stopped shaking. "Do you really mean that? Do you honestly believe that stuff, Kakashi?"

Kakashi's looked a bit surprised at how Obito's tone just changed.

He looked away. "Yes, I do,"

"Forget it," Obito let go of his shirt. "We'll never agree. We're like oil and water. I'm going to rescue Rin,"

"And I'm going to go rescue her too," I added, standing next to Obito.

"You don't understand Obito," Kakashi said. "You don't understand what happens to people who break the rules,"

I thought I could hear some sadness in his tone when he said that.

Obito stopped and didn't turn to face him.

"I believe the White Fang was a true hero," Obito said. "You're right. In the ninja world, those who break the rules and laws are regarded as scum, but those who abandon even one of their friends are worse than scum,"

Kakashi was speechless now.

"I'm scum anyway," Obito continued. "So, I'm going to break the rules. If doing that makes me less of a shinobi, then I'll just go and crush the all of the real so-called shinobi,"

Obito was done speaking to him and we started walking in the direction where the Stone ninjas took Rin.

"I hope nothing happened to her while we were stuck back there," I said.

"Me too," Obito replied.

Eventually, we found a cave and stood on a branch.

"So this is where they took her," I said.

Obito nodded and I noticed he started to shake.

I reached my hand out to him and put my hand in his. "Just stay calm, okay? We can't afford to start panicking now with her life at stake,"

He looked grateful that I had calmed him down a bit and slapped his face to snap out of it.

Obito and I braced ourselves.

"Alright, let's go," He said.

"Where are we going" An unfamiliar voice asked.

Obito froze and I turned around, ready to use my rasengan.

I started forming chakra in my hand, but then a flash of lightning came out of nowhere and I saw Kakashi had slashed his a blade on his chest, making him fall back. Blood spattered onto me and I wiped it off my face.

The Stone ninja snapped out of it and landed on the branch in front of us.

"Kakashi?" I asked.

"Kakashi..." Obito murmured. "Why did you...?"

Kakashi's tone changed. "Well, I certainly can't leave this up to a crybaby ninja and a blockhead, can I?"

A small smile spread onto my face. He sounded like him old self.

"Blockhead?" I huffed. "I'm not a blockhead!"

Obito was too speechless to answer.

I quickly looked over at the enemy, who started speaking. "I know that silver hair and that white blade. Could it be? The White Fang of the Leaf?"

Kakashi held the blade up. "This is a memento from my father,"

The enemy relaxed a bit. "Oh, I see. You're just the White Fang's brat. There's nothing to be nervous about,"

He turned invisible suddenly and I widened my eyes, quickly taking a kunai out to fend for myself in case he tried to sneak an attack on me. I listened closely for any sounds that may indicate he might be nearby.

"Thought so," Kakashi said. "Even his smell is gone, so we'll have to locate him by the slightest hint of sound,"

I heard a noise behind Obito and I panicked.

"Obito, behind you!" Kakashi and I both exclaimed at the same time.

I was going to move, but Kakashi pushed past me and took the hit for him, resulting in a slashed eye.

Kakashi fell back, clutching his eye in pain.

Obito knelt down to check on him and I quickly looked around to detect sounds so the enemy wouldn't try to sneak another attack on us. When it was safe, I moved over to check on Kakashi as well.

"Kakashi, hey are you alright?" Obito propped his body so he was sitting upright.

Kakashi clutched his left eye. "That guy, he's good. He got rid of the knife stained with my blood so I couldn't smell it,"

Obito started to tear up.

"Still have some of that dust in your eye?" Kakashi deadpanned. "A shinobi shouldn't cry. Stay focused,"

Obito lifted his goggles up to wipe the tears away and stood up.

"Die!" The enemy suddenly shouted from behind him and Obito shut his eyes and turned to face him.

"No!" I exclaimed, knowing he was going to get hurt.

But then, he held a kunai out to protect himself.

"B-But how?" The enemy stuttered, losing his intangibility. "There's no way you could've seen me!"

I then saw that Obito managed to hit him and even Kakashi was shocked.

"How did...?" Kakashi trailed off.

"Those eyes," The enemy tried to speak. "What are-?"

He ended up falling to his death and Obito put the kunai away. I could tell he was feeling more confident now.

"This time, I will protect my comrades,"

He turned around and I saw that his onyx eyes were now crimson. He's finally awakened his sharingan.

"Your eyes have changed," Kakashi remarked, widening his eyes.

Obito looked down at his hands. "Oh, I guess my sharingan has awakened. Now, I can see the movement and flow of chakra,"

Kakashi groaned in pain and I looked over at him.

"Are you okay?" I ask.

"Yeah, but it looks like my left eye is gone for good. I can use this kit Rin gave me to fix myself up. We have to save her now," Kakashi replied.

I nodded and stood up.

Kakashi started treating the gash on his eye and once he was done, I looked over at the cave.

"Are you ready?" Obito asked us.

Kakashi and I both nodded.

Then we hopped down from the branch to enter the cave and I could feel a twisting feeling in my chest as we ran towards this cave. I couldn't let Rin die on me. She was one of my close friends and I don't want to lose anyone in this war.
