Chapter 28
After finding the secluded spot, we settled there for the night. Rin and I were setting up the tent, Kakashi went to go find food, and Obito stayed with us to help if we needed it and to keep a lookout.
I sat down in front of the tent once we were finished and got lost in my thoughts again.
My mind kept replaying the day I met Rentaro. The way he held me by the neck and the way Mariko screamed out my name for me to help her while Yukio had me pinned to the floor. I grew angry because I couldn't get over how weak I was back then. Rentaro's smirk was forever burnt into my memories.
"Hana? What's wrong?" Obito asked me and sat down next to me.
I shut my eyes and opened them after letting a breath out.
"Nothing," I said.
I didn't want to admit that Rentaro and Yukio had broken my pride as a ninja.
"Don't lie to me," Obito said and took me by surprise. "It's not 'nothing'. You're bothered by something and you even pushed me away and didn't tell me that some 'anonymous' person was threatening you,"
"What? You knew about that?" I asked, looking at him with shock.
"Yeah, I did. Remember when I was upset the day I helped you move in with Minato-Sensei?" Obito asks.
I nodded.
"I found out because the drawer to your nightstand fell out when I moved it and the note fell out. You should've told me about it and I could've helped you. Not only that, Satoshi-" He cut himself off and stayed quiet.
I looked at him, feeling my heart pounding with anticipation.
"Satoshi what?"
He looked away and muttered something.
"Obito, speak up,"
His cheeks turned into a rose color and he looked in my direction, but couldn't look me in the eyes.
"He...He made me jealous..."
I didn't know what to say, but I felt a small smile starting to form on my face. Obito continued talking since I was quiet.
"I was...I was going to ask you something and you kept giving him your attention whenever he was around you," once he finished that sentence, his face turned into a brighter shade of red color.
He was blushing.
Over me!
I hid the smile that was on my face.
"W-What did you want to ask me that day?"
"D-Do you want to go..." He paused, getting nervous. "Go to the Cherry Blossom festival with me?"
My cheeks were now starting to turn into that rose shade. I was happy that he asked me, but I didn't know what to tell him because Kakashi had already asked me to go. and I didn't even give him an answer either.
What was I supposed to do right now?
Obito was staring at me now and we both started to lean in.
He suddenly stopped and quickly stood up.
"Um, okay. Just let me know when you can,"
He walked over by the fire and now my thoughts were no longer on Kuroshi, Nozomi, or Rentaro. They were now focused on what I should tell Obito and Kakashi. They asked me the same question and I don't even know who I want to go with.
Choosing between the two of them was like choosing what brand of water I should get.
There was no doubt I was attracted to Kakashi and now I'm starting to feel the same way towards Obito. This isn't good.
At least this distracted Obito from trying to get me to tell him what was bothering me. I refused to admit that I was still hung up over my defeat that was a month ago.
I couldn't even think of that though, Obito and Kakashi's question was echoing through my head and I didn't know what to say.
"Hana," Rin said, getting my attention.
She handed me some berries and nuts.
"This is all Kakashi could find since we aren't near a stream," She said.
I took them and started eating them.
"Also, are you alright?" She asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I sighed. "And I think I should tell you and the other two about what Kuroshi said to me when I defeated him,"
"Who's Kuroshi?" Kakashi asked, sitting down with Obito in front of us.
"I'll explain that to you in a second," I said. "There's something I need to tell all of you, but Rin, I need you to start explaining what happened during the explosion,"
She nodded.
"When the explosion happened, I saw Hana was about to get the worst of it so I tackled her to the ground. When I was in the middle of tackling her, I locked eyes with someone who had golden colored eyes and they started glowing and that's when I lost control of my body and thoughts," she said.
So, that is how Rin got overshadowed. I was right.
Now I started talking.
"Rin suddenly started attacking me out of nowhere and it freaked me out because I didn't know what was going on. She was acting strangely and in the middle of her attacking me, she tells me that she doesn't have control of her body and that her body was moving on its own," I said.
"So when did your friend step in?" Obito asks.
"He stepped in when Rin was attacking me and that gave me the opportunity to restrict her. The person who had overshadowed Rin was named Kuroshi and I got him out of her body because my chakra reacted to his," I answer.
"Overshadow? What do you mean?" Kakashi asked, confused.
"That's his kekkei genkai. It's similar to the sharingan and the mind transfer jutsu, but it's different because his eyes put you in a trance instead of a genjutsu and he turns transparent and steps inside of your body and takes it over, kind of like a ghost. He has control of your thoughts and your movements," I explained.
"I think I've heard of that kekkei genkai, but I don't remember what it's called," Kakashi said.
"Also, he avoids sunlight to use it and can feel pain if he's taken control of the person and they get hit," Rin added.
I finally explained when Guy helped me out and then how Kuroshi told me about Nozomi being his sister and how he wants me to kill her.
Kakashi didn't know what to say and Obito looked like he put two and two together.
"I think that's the dark presence I kept feeling two days ago! It must've been that Kuroshi guy, because it kept following us," Obito said.
"And you didn't bother to warn us?" Kakashi asked, irritated.
Obito glared at him.
"I thought you would've felt it, considering you were the leader," Obito retorts.
"Oh boy..." I sighed, knowing they were going to bicker again.
After all of that, we went to sleep inside the tent. The next morning, I felt a little better and we got our stuff packed up quickly.
It was currently day three here, so there are two days left to get out of here. I wanted to get out of this hell hole quickly too.
"Ready?" Kakashi asks as Rin adjusted her backpack.
She nodded and we started walking. Obito kept looking back at me and started walking at my same pace so he was next to me.
"So um," He blushed. "About last night..."
I blushed too.
"I'm still thinking,"
"O-Okay, that's fine. I was going to say if you didn't want to, you didn't have to go with me," He replied.
Rin glanced back at us, with a sly smile on her face. She turned her head back. Kakashi glanced back at me, seeing that I was blushing next to Obito and he looked a bit annoyed.
Now there was just an awkward silence.
I noticed a tall building in the distance and I perked up.
"Look!" I shouted excitedly. "There it is! We're getting out of here!"
I was about to run straight towards it, but Kakashi grabbed the back of my shirt.
"Hey, let go!" I struggled, making him sigh.
"You can't just run towards it like that, any tall structure will look like it's closer than it actually is," He lectured. "There's always a specific path that leads to it and we have to find it,"
He let go of my shirt and I scoffed.
"I guess you're right," I admitted, making a 'hmph' sound.
Kakashi observed his surroundings carefully and started leading us to the left side of the path.
"How do you know where you're going?" I ask Kakashi.
"The appearance of the ground,"
"Appearance of the ground?"
"Yes," he said. "You can tell by the way the ground is worn down. Other areas look grassy, but this particular trail we're using, it looks worn to almost dirt. That's how you can tell which leads us out,"
"Smart," I remarked.
"Hmph," Obito scoffed. "Anyone could've figured that out by now,"
Kakashi rolled his eyes and continued leading us out.
As Kakashi led us to the tower, it seemed to be getting closer by the minute. It was a weird trail though because it kept going in a zig-zag pattern.
An hour finally passed and we made it. All in three days.
"Finally!" I shouted.
As we were about to enter the tower, we heard footsteps that sounded like the person was running.
I turned around and I screamed out of surprise again because someone collided with me. All I saw was a flash of green and heard yelling about how the "power of youth" guided them before I hit the ground.
"Hana? You alright?" Obito asks, helping me up.
When I back on my feet, I rubbed my head.
"I'll be fine," I said and saw Guy lying on the ground, sprawled out.
I sweat dropped and he got up quickly, rubbing his chest in pain.
"For someone your height, you're really firm," Guy remarked.
A vein appeared on my head. "That's why you shouldn't run into me like that, idiot! And I'm not that short!"
Kakashi spoke, "You're 4'11,"
"Stuff it, Hatake!" I retorted in embarrassment.
I could tell Kakashi was smirking underneath his mask.
Guy patted my head and looked at Kakashi, then back at me.
"You're both very hot-blooded! That's why you're both of my rivals!" Guy grinned.
I swatted his hands away, "Don't pet my head,"
"Hm? Did you say something?" Kakashi asked, bored.
Guy fell over dramatically and quickly regained posture.
"Very quick of you, Kakashi!" Guy exclaimed.
"Where's your team?" Rin asks him and he smirked
"They're back there," He pointed with his thumb. "They're just a bunch of slowpokes. I sprinted when I saw Kakashi and Hana,"
Rin and Obito both sweat dropped.
"Guy, wait up!" A boy's voice called.
We all turned around seeing Genma and Ebisu. Ebisu panted and Genma just sighed.
"You've gotta be quicker then, Ebisu!" Guy smirked.
"Guy," Genma sighed. "You sprinted,"
"What's going on here? Why is everyone crowding the entrance?" We heard another voice join in. I recognized Asuma's voice.
I saw Kurenai and their teammate, Raido.
I waved at Asuma and Kurenai. Kurenai smiled.
"I'm glad you made it." She said.
I smelled smoke and I realized Asuma was smoking a cigarette.
"Are you smoking?" I ask, with disbelief.
"Yes," He answered, casually.
"Well, I don't like that,"
"Why not?"
"Because, they're gross and I just don't like it," I retort, making him sweat drop.
He took the cigarette out of his mouth and threw it on the ground, then stomping on it.
"Happy?" he sighed.
"Yes,"
We talked for a little bit and Kakashi grew annoyed.
"Are we going to keep standing here? Let's go already," Kakashi said.
So we all walked inside of the tower. I was taken aback when I saw Minato, who just suddenly appeared in front of us.
"Sensei?" Rin asks, confused.
"Congratulations, guys! You completed the Forest of Death without the scroll being opened," Minato smiled.
"Wait, how do you know whether the scroll has been opened or not?" I ask.
He took the scroll out of our hands, "By this,"
He opened it and the scroll shot a smoke bomb. I coughed from the smoke being blown in my face.
"This is a seal and you automatically fail if it's been opened. There's nothing in it except for the words 'earth' or 'heaven' written inside of it," Minato explained.
"I'm ready for the next part, when do we start?" Guy asks eagerly.
"Not yet," Minato chuckled. "We need to wait for the other genin to come and then Hokage will give you guys a speech,"
Guy was disappointed.
"A few genin have already come, so you guys can go rest up and get your injuries treated if you have any," Minato said and opened a door that led to a hallway. The ten of us walked through andI shivered slightly since it was cold.
I was glad to be out of the Forest of Death. Now, I was very anxious for the next part of the exam and I was ansty because I wanted my training to start already. I wanted to learn that new jutsu that Uncle Minato was going to show me and I wanted to train with Jiraiya already.
