Chapter 19 - Encountering Myself
I wiped off my tears by the back of my hands and stared at Ved in panic. His brows scrunched as he stood erect and eyed the doorway.
"What's happening?" I asked and stood up hastily. He didn't respond but his jaws clenched. He grabbed his phone from the table and quickly moved and exited the cabin, me following him close behind. We descended the stairs and rushed through the corridor of the first floor, pushing away the crowd. Ved entered a room at the end of the corridor. It was the surveillance room. Twenty huge screens were hanging on the wall all around the room showing different parts of the building. I roamed my eyes over the screens and focused on a particular screen.
I raised my hand and pointed at it. My throat almost choked from the terror. "Right there."
Ved had noticed it too. He told the working employee to zoom the screen.
A figure, with a hooded jacket on, moved fast through the corridor. It was the top floor, where we had been a few seconds back. He looked at his left then right and then looked straight at the security camera. He knew he was being watched. In the next few seconds, his actions left me stunned that I forgot to breathe. Unexpectedly, two huge wings spread out behind his back. It was a mixture of silver and mauve color. Then he pointed a finger at the camera, thereafter showed a thumbs down, and I somehow knew he was talking to me. Shortly after, in a blur, he was gone.
I tugged at Ved's suit, hiding behind him. My spinal cord itched while a certain kind of lethargy washed over me. My eyelids suddenly felt heavy and goosebumps erupted on my skin. I didn't know what was happening to me, but I knew it felt burdensome. As if I was bearing a phantom weight on my shoulders.
"Let's get out of the building. Quick!" Ved said and everyone vacated the place hurriedly. We went outside, ran down the stairs until we reached the parking lot. He got into his car, me following him swiftly. I watched others gathering below the office building from inside the car while Ved ignited the engine.
"You'll be safe with the elders," he stated sternly.
As soon as I nodded to acknowledge his resolve, a loud crash from the rooftop as a portion of the building collapsed just behind their car. I shrieked, turned my head back and saw Abhay running towards their car. Panic was written all over his features.
My eyes swept over to Ved's direction. His jaws visibly clenched as he waited for Abhay to come over, and when he did, Ved said in a grim voice, "I am going to the packhouse. Inform the headquarters. It's an attack from the demons, and alert the wolves. If such situation arises, you have my permission to shift irrespective of the situation."
Abhay nodded obediently as Ved caught brief glance at him before pressing on the accelerator. The car took off as he drove in high speed in the pack house's way.
The tremors in my heart never went away as I knew it has something to do with me. The demons were after me and it was quite obvious after my encounters with Noraak. The palpitations grew on me as I tried to kept my mind away from the itching on my back. It had been itching continuously since I saw the strange being on the surveillance screen. He certainly wasn't a fae. Cause I have seen the faes in the forest, but he still had wings. Does that mean... My inside quivered of an apprehensible fear. Somehow my intuition knew, I and that strange being, were relatable some sort of way. I did not want to acknowledge it but it gave a clear indication.
We both were hybrids.
We were only midway towards the packhouse when the black-clad figure appeared in front of our car. The car screeched to a halt even though Ved didn't do anything to stop the car. It was him.
"What the hell!" Ved muttered and hit the steering in frustration.
I looked ahead horror-stricken at the figure who still had his hood on making it impossible for us to see his face. His wings were spread out behind his back as he levitated in the air, close to the ground. I heard a low register of Ved's growling as he unclasped the safety belt. From my peripheral vision I noticed him changing his appearance. His skin turned black and furry as he opened the door and got off the car hastily.
The next few events happened in a blur that I barely got time to register what was happening.
Ved changed into his wolf mid-air while leaping at the figure. I screamed aloud, "Stop!" as I climbed out the car.
Ved had leapt high in the air towards the levitating figure, the hybrid. The strange hybrid held up his hand. The moment Ved leapt towards the hybrid I screamed his name from top of my lungs. A flash appeared over my head blinding my vision for a quick second. The darkness split in half in front of me as I found my vision went silvery.
Everything I saw had a tinge of silver in them. It scared me crap-load. But when I saw them fighting, I forced my fear into the back gear. It came to me instinctively, somewhat confusing me. Why the heck was I not afraid senseless as I should?
Ved's wolf growled and took a stance before leaping forward again and attacking the figure. Meanwhile, the hybrid flapped his wings and rose higher from the ground. His hands clasped behind his back lazily. While Ved was continuously growling and trying to catch him, the hybrid remained unruffled, levitating in the mid-air. As if he was toying with the beast.
After a couple of pointless attempts, the wolf stopped and bared his fangs, glowering at the figure.
I took a step towards them when, all of a sudden, the hybrid raised his hand and a sword appeared into his hand out of thin air. Much like the faes I had seen in the forest. I reckoned he was about to attack. Before I could warn Ved, he swished the sword around and made an overhand wide arc cut at the open air.
For once I thought he was just playing, but I was soon proven wrong when a gust of black smoke surged out of his sword and hit the wolf in his chest.
The wolf howled in agony and skidded several feet away from the floating figure.
My hands turned cold and I screamed, "Ved!"
I watched wide eyed while feeling the itch on my back turning to a burning sensation. The overhead flash appeared again as a white-hot pain shot through the crown of my head and electrocuting my entire body.
I closed my eyes momentarily before opening them as my vision focused on the levitating figure in front of me. There was a distant thought that something abnormal was happening to me. But I was unable to process it for a long time as the figure shifted the endpoint of his sword at me once he made sure the wolf was still making efforts to stand erect.
There was another flash above his head as he raised his sword. The lightning struck his sword as I stared at him astonishingly. The lightning did not harm him as he stayed unhurt right where he was.
My inside quivered for a quick second as he made a swishing motion with his sword above his head before jutting it towards me. A thin string of lightning came out of it and ran straight towards me.
I watched wide eyed as the lightning bolt struck me.
However, instead of feeling pain, I stood their erect. A sensation surged through my body, hitting all the vital parts of my body. My vision glazed over for a few seconds while I felt an iciness wrapping my heart which spread rapidly through the veins running across my body. There was a sensation in my belly that extended quickly to my core. My limbs felt electrocuted. Instinctively, my fists turned into rigid balls and my toes curled on their own. I felt captive.
I knew, there was something abnormal happening inside me, but I was unable to do anything to stop it. I searched for Mani inside me, hoping she'd do something to break free. But there was no sign of her.
I didn't know how much time I spent like that, until a grisly growl split across the air, trembling my inside out. Something huge and heavy hit my arm making me fall on the ground. I shook uncontrollably and a whimper left my lips. A moment later, my vision adjusted slightly. It remained silvery nonetheless.
The feeling of held captive lifted off me. I could finally move my limbs on my own. I blinked twice more until finally adjusting my vision ahead of me.
The terrifyingly massive black wolf had his teeth sunk on the ankle of the levitating figure while he hit the wolf with his sword ceaselessly. It was a gory battle.
I could hear the angry rumble that erupted from the wolf's throat while the levitating figure kept his calm as ice.
I couldn't watch it going any longer. I realized I need to do something. But what? What could I do?
I didn't realize when tears started streaming down my face. I begged to God hopelessly, asking for a sign to save Ved. A huge portion of his fur around his neck was chopped off. His fur was now matted with crimson blood.
I needed to do something. I needed to do something. I repeated to myself until I slumped forward dejectedly and slammed the ground hard. A surge of sparks blasted out of the joint my palms and the ground was making. My crying stopped immediately as I stared at my hands.
I didn't know how and why I knew this, but I had to cut myself in order to save Ved. A meek voice whispered at the back of my mind that I needed my blood. My blood is potent. It can certainly help the wolf defeat the hybrid.
As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I dug my nails in the flesh of my palm. It stung when the nails break into the skin, drawing blood.
Instinctively, I stood up and took a step towards the fighting beings. I had no idea what I'd do but my instinct told me to strike the hybrid with my blood.
Meanwhile, the levitating figure was struggling to stay up in the air. The wolf dragged him down by his ankle. The hybrid flapped his wings, at the same time his sword vanished. It was all of a sudden. But when the sword vanished, a black smoky ball appeared on his hand. He didn't delay a single second before hitting the wolf with the smoke. The wolf howled in agony and released his leg. I saw his body skidding back and collapsing on the mountain wall. The hybrid flapped his wings again gaining height above the ground. Two balls of smoke appeared on his hands instantly as his focus shifted back on me.
I, on the other hand, advanced towards him with my hands bleeding profusely. Strangely enough, he didn't strike me immediately. While I was still scheming what I should do with my hands raised in front of me, he waited very patiently.
When I reached considerably closer to him, my eyes strayed towards the wolf sprawling at one side of the deserted road. Anger surged through me watching the wolf lying there almost unconsciously. My eyes burned from the unshed tears as I shifted my revengeful gaze back on him.
"WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?" I screamed. "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?"
He said nothing at first while I panted lightly. Then I heard his voice. Calm and mellifluous, evil nonetheless.
"We need you."
"FOR WHAT?"
He didn't respond to my question, instead said, "Come with me."
"NEVER!"
At this point, I lost it. I didn't know what came over me but I jutted both of my hands to his direction and the flash reappeared above my head. I hit him hard with the lightning bolt. The figure skidded back a little, but he never attacked me with the smoke still spiraling around his hand.
I was far too worked up to care about that strange behavior. I took a step closer and hit him again, the streaks of lightning had now turned red.
He wrapped his hands around his abdomen where I had hit him. Otherwise, he looked well enough. I still couldn't see his face as he had the hoodie on but I sensed he was smiling at me.
Then within a blink of an eye, he retreated and was gone. Just vanished. From right in front of my eyes!
I blinked several times and eyed around the place to make sure he was truly gone. When I realized he was truly gone I turned my head towards the Wolf. His eyes were already on me. Momentarily our eyes locked before he shifted back.
It was a blood-curdling mess to witness. Both his shoulders received numerous blows from the sword. The wounds were gaping and bleeding profusely. And at the middle of his chest, there was the same black wound, that appeared like clotted blood.
He reached for me raising his right hand slightly. I ran towards him crying like an endless river and dropped on my knees, in front of him. I cried uncontrollably while pulling his head up and placing it on my lap. He struggled to raise his hand up and reach...behind me. His eyes shifted between my face and whatever that was behind me. Was there someone behind me? Before I could turn my head and see it for myself, a whisper escaped his lips, "Your wings are beautiful."
"My what?" I asked but he was gone by then as his bloody, raised hand collapsed and he passed out.
I looked over my shoulder and encountered with a pair of massive, sparkling, translucent yellow wings. They moved behind me lazily, elegantly. I gazed down on unconscious Ved and pulled out my phone to call for help. The first number happened to be Abhay's.
I dialed his number and connected the phone to my ear.
"Hello?" Abhay answered on the other side.
"Abhay, send help. Ved lost his consciousness."
"What?" He exclaimed in panic and cut the call off immediately.
I lowered the phone and looked at Ved. Tears streamed down my face nonstop. But I can do nothing except waiting for the weres to find us out.
So, I sat down beside the mountain wall spreading my wings wide, holding a naked man, no. A naked werewolf's unconscious body. I pondered what else life had in store for me as I waited for the help to arrive.
