2 - Notice me!
At 8AM, I got up and got ready for another day of school. I hoped that no one would have seen the news so that I would be the talk of the school. Felix hadn't followed me to the breakfast table that morning - usually he did. I looked at him as he stared out the window by the sink - which faced the front lawn. Maybe he missed my parents. I couldn't understand why; as I was the only one that fed him and played with him. Not to mention cleaning his poop out of his box.
I shrugged it off and continued to fix breakfast for myself. Once I finished, I grabbed my bag and left for school. Everything seemed normal as I stepped onto the school's boundary line. Kids were screaming, laughing, talking with their friends. Everyone has their own little cliqué. Everyone except me. Not even the "Loners of Today" group wanted to hang with me. I guess it was useless to try to change myself to be someone I'm not, just to fit into some group.
The bell rang and I quickly headed to my first class. As I walked in, I noticed the teacher had not yet arrived. I was not yet late. So I took my seat at the back of the class and took out my books. By this time, everyone had settled down and the teacher - Mr. Sinter - had walked in, put his stuff down, and maneuvered to the chalkboard. He picked up a piece of white chalk and faced the green-black board, he then began to write down the agenda for today's class. The students around me began jotting down notes, mimicking the teacher's pace. I just leaned on my right arm and stared aimlessly at Mr.Sinter. It's not like the agenda was equivalent to the quadratic formula.
Once finished, Mr. Sinter walked back to his desk and pulled out a piece of paper - the attendance sheet.
"I'm gonna do the attendance now." He spoke in his firm voice. Once everyone was silent, he began to read aloud the names printed on the sheet. When he got to my name, he called it out.
"Here!" I called back.
"Tori." He called again. Did he not hear me the first time?
"I am here!" I called back again, this time raising my voice to a loud talk.
"Is Tori Wood here?" He asked once more. Is his old age getting to him? Is he going deaf? I could not understand why he could not hear me.
"I AM HERE!" I yelled standing up and knocking my chair over.
The class all turned to face me at the sound of the chair falling. My face turned red with embarrassment. I did not mean to knock the chair over.
"Hmm... not here." Mr. Sinter mumbled and carried on to the next names.
He has never not noticed me before, this was getting weird. First Felix and now Mr. Sinter. Why were they both acting weird? I had to get some answers to my weird questions.
So I put the chair back onto its four legs and sat back down. Once the teacher had finished reading all the names, I raised my hand in attempt to get his attention.
"May I use the bathroom?" I asked loudly, Mr. Sinter made no effort to notice me. I waved my hand vigorously back and forth, and shouted my request. Still, I was denied. Finally, I decided to give up all hope of being noticed and just walked out of the class room. If he had been ignoring me, I would be in a lot of trouble for leaving his class for when I returned.
But I knew what I had to do. And so I walked purposefully to the guidance office - some place where I knew that I would be noticed.
