You look afraid to me
*Rapunzel's POV*
I finished helping the janitors around 5:00. I hate to admit, but I actually liked it. I met a bunch of new people and they were really sweet. When they told me I could go home, my heart sank a little. I didn't want to go home and face my mother. I slowly walked out of the building and drove my car super slow. Everyone honked at me, but I didn't care. Eventually, I pulled into the driveway around 5:30. I grabbed my books and walked to the door. I took a deep breath and walked in. Mom was in the kitchen cleaning. She always cleans when she's stressed out. Great. "Hey mom." I said. She didn't say anything. "Hello?" I asked. She didn't turn around or anything. "Mom." I said. She looked at me, then back at the floor. "Alright then." I said. I sat down at the table and started studying my chemistry. She wandered around the house cleaning everything in sight. I didn't really pay any attention to what she was doing. Soon, it was 6:45 and she still hadn't said a word to me. "Mom. Just say something so I know you can hear me." I said.
"I'm very disappointed in you." Mom said from the living room.
"Who isn't?" I mumbled under my breath.
"What?" Mom asked.
"Who isn't? I'm disappointed in myself! Eugene is disappointed in me!" I yelled.
"Why did you do it then?" Mom asked.
"I don't know." I cried.
"You obviously know, Rapunzel. Now tell me." Mom commanded as she sat beside me.
"She called me horrible, nasty names." I said.
"That's it? Rapunzel, I thought I taught that words should never hurt you." Mom said.
"It wasn't just the names. She, she talked bad about our family." I stuttered. Mom looked at me confused.
"What did she say?" Mom asked.
"She said that if I was anything like you, that I wouldn't last long in a relationship." I cried, not making eye contact.
"Oh." Mom said.
"Yeah. I was offended that she would say something that mean about you and dad. I was even more offended that she said it would happened to me." I said.
"Rapunzel. Baby, that would never happen to you." Mom said as she pulled me into a hug.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"I'm sure. I won't let you make the same mistakes your father and I did. I won't let you give up just because things get tough. I won't let you walk out on each other." Mom comforted.
"Okay. So, what's my punishment?" I asked.
"What do you think?" Mom asked.
"I can't have my phone or see my friends for a month." I replied.
"No! That's really extreme. You have to go to the orphanage for an hour everyday until I tell you to stop." Mom said.
"The orphanage?" I questioned.
"Yeah, I think you'll learn plenty while you're there." Mom said.
"Like what?" I asked.
"You'll finally learn how to change diaper. You'll learn how bad some kids have it. It will also teach you how to disciple small children." Mom said.
"Do I have to go by myself?" I asked.
"You can bring Eugene, Kristoff, or Elsa." Mom said.
"Why not Jack?" I asked.
"Isn't he part of the reason you got in a fight today?" Mom asked.
"Yeah, but he shouldn't be punished for it." I argued.
"I'm not punishing him. I just don't want people to get the idea that you have a thing with him." Mom said.
"What does that have to do with going to the orphanage?" I asked.
"You two will be seen together, by yourselves." Mom said.
"Okay, you're right." I grumbled.
"I'm always right. Now, let's make dinner." Mom said. We made ourselves chicken pot pies and called it good. I got ready for bed and fell asleep, dreading tomorrow.
*Eugene's POV*
We were in the middle of practice when I heard someone yell my name. I looked towards the road and saw Tiffany sticking her head out the window of Brittany's car. She was shouting my name and sending me kisses. I rolled my eyes and looked away. "So Eugene. Are you a part of the reason Jack and Tonya broke up?" Adam teased.
"Oh god no." I replied.
"What? Don't you think she's even a little cute?" Adam asked.
"No. I can't stand her." I answered.
"Really? So Jack and Rapunzel don't have a thing, right?" Adam asked.
"Yeah. They never have. Never will." I said.
"Why? Got a thing for Rapunzel?" Adam teased as he playfully elbowed me in the ribs.
"What? No. Where did you hear that?" I asked.
"No where." Adam smiled.
"Well what about you and Belle? Going out yet?" I teased.
"What? No. We're just friends." Adam nervously stuttered.
"Look. Let just keep this between us." I compromised.
"Okay. I don't know anything about Rapunzel. You don't know anything about Belle." Adam smiled.
"Boys! Get back to practicing!" Coach yelled. We practiced until about 5:30. I drove home and plopped onto my couch. I was scrolling through the channels when dad came home.
"Hey. How was work?" I asked.
"Same old same old. How was school?" He grumbled.
"Rapunzel got in a fight." I answered.
"What?" Dad asked.
"Yeah. I'm surprised you haven't got a call from Regina yet." I replied. Instantly, dad's phone started ringing.
"Hello? Hey Regina. I'm good." Dad said into the phone. I ignored him, knowing that he would tell me about it later. Soon, we made dinner and sat down at the table.
"So, what did Regina have to say?" I asked as I passed him the vegetables.
"She wanted to know my opinion on her punishment for Rapunzel." Dad answered.
"What were your options?"
"Rapunzel would have to give up her phone and car, or she could volunteer somewhere."
"What did you pick?"
"The volunteer work. I mean, taking away her phone and car won't do anything to her, but making her do work will." Dad answered.
"Where is she working?"
"The orphanage, and I told Regina that if Rapunzel didn't want to go alone that you would tag along."
"I don't want to go." I groaned.
"I don't care. Besides, it's only if Rapunzel wants someone along." Dad replied.
"Okay." I sighed. Eventually we went to bed. As usual, I heard my door creak open and quietly shut again. It was a habit I used to. When my mom told my dad to make sure I was sleeping at night, he took it literally. Soon, I had to get up for school. I quickly went out to the stables and fed Max. Then, I hurried inside and had some breakfast. Soon, I took my shower and grabbed my books. I hopped into my pickup and drove to school. For once, I got there at the same time as Rapunzel.
"Hi Eugene." Rapunzel greeted.
"Hey Rapunzel. I see your eye has gotten a little better." I teased.
"Yeah. Well, makeup can only cover so much." Rapunzel giggled. We got to our lockers and they were both covered in notes. Mine said things about Tonya and me looking cute together. I rolled my eyes and ripped them off. Lucky for me, my locker was right next to the garbage, so I tossed it into the trash. I opened my locker and grabbed my books. I walked to Rapunzel's locker and saw that she hadn't opened it yet.
"Hey. You alright?" I asked as I touched her shoulder.
"Yeah, yeah. I was just staring off into space." Rapunzel smiled. But I knew she was lying, I could tell that she was reading what each note said.
"Rapunzel, none of those words are true." I said.
"I know." Rapunzel replied.
"Then quit reading them." I said as I swiped them onto the floor. As they fell, one caught my eye. It said something about me. I quickly grabbed it and read it as she unlocked her locker.
Everyone else might think that you like Jack, but I know that you like Eugene.
I swiftly crumpled it up and shoved it into my pocket. I know she doesn't want people to find out about her crush. She slammed her locker shut and walked with me to math. When we got in there, Adam was just leaving.
"Hey Rapunzel! Hey Eugene!" Adam greeted as he walked out the door.
"Hey Adam!" We replied. We quickly set down out books and hurried back to the busy hallway. As we were walking towards Elsa and her friends, I saw someone tap on Rapunzel's shoulder. We turned around and saw Brittany.
"Really Rapunzel? You're going after Tonya's boyfriend again?" Brittany asked.
"What are you talking about?" Rapunzel asked.
"Eugene. They have a thing you know." Brittany scoffed.
"What? No we don't!" I yelled. What is she talking about?!
"Come on, don't deny it. Everyone already knows." Brittany smiled.
"I will never have a thing for Tonya!" I yelled.
"Why not? What is so wrong with her?" Brittany yelled.
"God, we just went over this yesterday! She's conceited!" Rapunzel ranted.
"Oh really? And you aren't?" Brittany asked.
"Hey. Don't talk to her like that." Merida said, walking in front of Rapunzel.
"And who are you?" Brittany asked.
"I am Merida, one of Rapunzel's friends. If you ever mess with her, you mess with me." Merida growled.
"Like I'm afraid of you." Brittany laughed. Merida pushed her against the lockers, making Brittany stiff up. She had wide eyes and she was turning pale.
"You look afraid to me." Merida smirked.
"At least I'm not stealing everyone's boyfriends." Brittany replied. I looked at Rapunzel and saw her stomping towards Merida and Brittany. I quickly grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
"Eugene, let me go." Rapunzel yelled as she tried to twist her wrist out of my strong grip.
"No. I'm not letting you get in a fight again. Especially over something this stupid." I argued.
"I won't fight her." Rapunzel lied.
"Let's just go and let Merida work this out." I replied as I pulled her through the groups of people gathering around to watch the drama. I pulled her to my locker and stood there, making sure she wouldn't leave.
"Eugene, I wasn't going to fight her." Rapunzel argued.
"I know." I replied.
"Then why did you take me away?" Rapunzel asked.
"I couldn't take the chance of her saying something else." I yelled.
"Like what? What would she say?" Rapunzel asked.
"I don't know. Something to embarrass you. Something to make you fight her." I replied.
"I could have taken her." Rapunzel replied.
"I know, but you could have ended up back in Mr. Walt's office, and he wouldn't have been very nice to you. He hates violence, so if you went in there twice for fighting, then you probably would have been expelled." I yelled.
"I guess." Rapunzel grumbled.
"Let's just keep low. Whenever someone says something, or does something mean. Ignore them. If they keep bothering you or you know you can't control your emotions, come find me." I said.
"Okay." Rapunzel agreed. We walked back to the math room, ignoring all the glares and whispers. Hopefully, this will all end soon.
