It's a surprise
*Rapunzel's POV*
This was it. I sat down in my chair in Miss Sarah's classroom. I looked nervously around the room, afraid of what my fellow classmates would think of my song. Would they enjoy it or would they make me the laughing stock of the school? Sudden talking interrupted my thoughts. "I hope you finished your songs because today, you're going to present them to the class. I'm going to close my eyes and whoever I land on on the sitting chart will perform, okay?" Miss Sarah asked. Everyone murmured in agreement. "Alright, here we go." Miss Sarah said as she moved her finger over the laminated paper. "Elsa." Miss Sarah smiled. She's in this class?
"Okay." Elsa nervously said. She walked to the front of the class while people murmured behind her. She handed Miss Sarah her sheet music and walked over to the microphone. "Hey everyone. This piece is called Let it Go and I hope you enjoy." Elsa weakly smiled. Miss Sarah took that as her cue to start playing the opening. Elsa took a deep breath and began.
The snow glows white on the mountain tonight, not a footprint to be seen. A kingdom of isolation and it looks I'm the queen. The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside. Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I tried. Don't let them in, don't let them see. Be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal don't feel, don't let them know. Well now they know!
Let it go. Let it go. Can't hold it back anymore! Let it go. Let it go. Turn away and slam the door. I don't care, what they're going to say! Let the storm rage on. The cold never bothered me anyway.
It funny how some distance makes everything seem small and the fears that once controlled me, can't get to me at all. It's time to see what I can do, to test the limit and break though. No right, no wrong, no rules for me! I'm free!
Let it go! Let it go! I am one with the wind and sky! Let it go! Let it go! You'll never see me cry! Here I stand and here I'll stay! Let the storm rage on!
My power flurries through the air into the ground. My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals around. And one thought crystallizes like an ice blast, I'm never going back, the past is in the past!
Let it go! Let it go! And I'll rise like the break on dawn! Let it go! Let it go! That perfect girl is gone! Here I stand, in the light of day! Let the storm rage on! The cold never bothered me anyway.
Everyone was so stunned that the shy girl could sing with such a powerful voice. I finally came back to reality and cheered as loud as I could. Everyone joined in with me, chanting her name and telling her how wonderful she sang. There's no way I could top that.
"That was beautiful Elsa! Let's see who's up next." Miss Sarah cheered. She shut her eyes as she picked the next student. She opened her eyes and smiled big. "Rapunzel!" I grabbed my guitar and walked down to the front of the class. I handed Miss Sarah the piano music. "Are you playing your guitar?" She asked.
"Yeah." I smiled I tuned my guitar and walked to the mic. "Hey guys! So this won't be as good as Elsa's but I think you'll like it. I wrote this song awhile ago so if some of the lyrics don't make sense, you know why." I giggled. Everyone chuckled along with me. "Oh, almost forgot. My song is called When Will My Life Begin?" I smiled and looked at Miss Sarah. I strummed out my intro and took a deep breath, ready to sing.
7 AM the usual morning line up. Start on the chores and sweep till the floor's all clean. Polish and wax, do laundry and mop and shine up. Sweep again and by then it's like 7:15.
And so I'll read a book or maybe two or three. I'll add a few new painting to my gallery. I'll play guitar and knit and cook and basically just wonder when will my life begin?
Then after lunch it's puzzles and darts and baking. Paper mache, a bit of ballet and chess. Pottery and ventriloquy, candle making. Then I'll stretch, maybe sketch, take a climb, sew a dress!
And I'll reread the books, if I have time to spare. I'll paint the walls some more, I'm sure there's room somewhere. And then I'll brush and brush and brush and brush my hair. Stuck in the same place I've always been.
And I'll keep wonderin' and wonderin' and wonderin' and wonderin' when will my life begin?
Tomorrow night, the lights will appear. Just like they do on my birthday each year. What is it like? Out there where they glow? Now that I'm older, mother might just let me go.
I looked up and no one did anything. I sighed and started putting my guitar away. Oh well, I'm not really a singer anyways. Suddenly I heard tons of clapping. I looked and saw Elsa clapping as loud as she could and everyone joining in. I couldn't help but smile. I thanked everyone as I walked past them. I sat in my chair and watched everyone else sing their songs and cheered for them. Soon, the bell rang and I ran to my locker. I quickly packed up my things and ran to Elsa's locker. "Ready to go?" I asked.
"Actually, I was thinking about hanging out with Merida." Elsa lightly chuckled. I looked and saw Merida try not to make eye contact. No, you're not getting out this that easily.
"Alright, we'll hang out with them too." I smirked.
"What?" They asked.
"You are spending the night at my house. But, we can sneak out to hang out with them. We just have to be back by 6:00 so my mom won't freak out." I smiled.
"Ooo, I like the way you think!" Merida cheered.
"Are you sure you want to sneak out of your house?" Elsa asked.
"I've done it billions of times." I laughed.
"Okay." Elsa smiled.
"Alright, so come to my house around midnight and I'm going to take you guys somewhere fun." I smirked.
"Alright, wait! Can Hiccup and Anna come?" Merida asked.
"Of course your boyfriend and best friend's little sister can come!" I smiled.
"Yes! Tonight is going to be AWESOME!" Merida cheered. Elsa and I walked out to our cars and drove to my house. We parked in my driveway and went up the front steps, stopping at the door.
"Okay, today's a Friday so she'll be home by four. She will ask you tons of questions and you have to answer honestly because trust me, she knows everything. So if you lie, she'll know. She's nicer once she gets to know you and don't be afraid of her aggressive attitude." I warned.
"Okay." Elsa said.
"Alright, let's go." I smiled. I opened the door and gave her a tour of the house. I showed her our picture wall, the music room, my room, and of course the bathroom. I finished off the tour by leading her into the kitchen. "So, what would you like to eat?" I asked. Elsa was about to answer when a squeak cut her off.
"Was that a mouse?" Elsa asked nervously. I looked around and saw Pascal looking at her, trying to see if he knew her.
"Pascal." I scolded.
"Hey! It's your chameleon!" Elsa cheered. She leaned in close. "Hey little guy!" Elsa smiled. I picked him up so I could introduce them.
"Pascal, this is Elsa. She's super friendly and really nice." I said. Pascal ran down my hand to get closer to her face. He looked her up and down and smiled. "Elsa, this is Pascal. Let's just say he has a colorful personality." I chuckled.
"What do you mean?" Elsa asked. I quickly ran to the fridge and grabbed out a orange. I peeled it open and gave Pascal a slice. He knew what I was doing so he turned orange. "That's so cool! You know, I have a cat named Olaf and he's super soft. But he can't do any cool tricks like this!" Elsa smiled. Suddenly, mom came through the door carrying her folders.
"Rapunzel, can you make me a coffee?" Mom asked.
"Sure." I smiled at Elsa and started the coffee maker. "Mom, we have a guest." I said as I handed her her coffee.
"Really? Oh, hi. I'm Regina!" Mom said.
"I'm Elsa." Elsa smiled.
"Arendelle?"
"Yeah."
"Your parents are doctors, right?"
"Yeah, they have pretty busy lives."
"I know all about having a busy life. Single mother with a demanding job."
"Oh, what do you do?"
"I'm a lawyer."
"That is pretty busy."
"So Elsa, who do you hang out with?"
"Mom!" I yelled.
"What? I'm just wondering!" Mom replied.
"Hiccup Haddock, Merida DunBroch, and my little sister, Anna." Elsa smiled.
"What are they like?" Mom proceeded.
"Mom!" I yelled.
"I'm just want to make sure that she's hanging around with the the right people. Because if she's not, then I don't want you hanging out with them." Mom reasoned.
"They are good kids." Elsa smiled.
"So, what is your house number? I just want to call your parents and make sure they are okay with you being here." Mom said looking at me.
"Here you go." Elsa said as she handed mom a piece of paper with their number on it.
"Thank you for cooperating unlike Rapunzel." Mom said as she glared at me. I gave her back the same glare. I heard Elsa trying to keep from laughing so I looked away. "I'm going to call your parents. Have fun girls!" Mom said rising from the table knowing that she won.
"Let's go to my room!" I smiled as I dragged her up the stairs. I jumped onto my bed as Elsa closed the door.
"You have a lot of paintings." Elsa chuckled as she sat down on my bed.
"Yeah, well when your mom won't let you leave and she's never home, you find something to do." I smiled.
"Where's your dad?" Elsa asked.
"Oh, when I was about seven my parents divorced." I replied.
"Oh, sorry. I shouldn't have asked." Elsa replied.
"Oh no, it's okay. I don't mind talking about it. Ask me anything." I replied. The boys never want to talk about this stuff because they think I'll cry or something.
"Okay, why did they divorce?" Elsa asked.
"My dad found someone prettier and younger than my mom."
"Did he cheat on her?"
"No, he actually told my mom about her and asked for a divorce so he did stay faithful."
"How often do you visit him?"
"I probably haven't seen him since my 13th birthday. When my parents divorced, my mom offered that he would take me on weekends and she would take me on weekdays, but he didn't want anything to do with me. He wanted to move away from here and didn't want me to deal with that, so instead he pays my mom every month. He also didn't want anything to remind him of my mother. But, my mom invited him down so he could see me again. He agreed and we talked about school and boys. He was there for about an hour then he left."
"Oh, that's so sad."
"Not really. You know, you're the first person I've ever talked about this with, other than my mom." I chuckled.
"Not even the boys?"
"They don't like talking about stuff like this."
"What, are they afraid you'll cry?" Elsa teased.
"I think so!" I laughed.
"Can I ask you about your song?" Elsa asked.
"Shoot!" I smiled.
"What were the lights you were talking about?" Elsa asked.
"I was talking about New York. I've always wanted to go there and explore it. But, like I said in my song, I've been stuck wondering when my life will begin." I smiled.
"That's cool how you just called them lights. It makes the song more mysterious and let's people think about the things they want in life. The things that sparkle so bright that they just can't wait to see it." Elsa said.
"That's a good explanation of my song. But what was this power you were talking about in your song? What were you letting go?"
"I was letting go of my shyness. I was using my confidence as power." Elsa blushed.
"So it's a song about breaking out of your shell. You were getting rid of the girl people thought you were and showing them what you were really like and you didn't care what they thought." I rambled as I was finally understanding her song.
"Basically." Elsa chuckled. We talked about school and our favorite after school activities. Soon, it was time for dinner.
"Girls! Do you want some pizza?" Mom yelled up the stairs.
"Coming!" We replied. I slid down the railing and Elsa ran down the stairs.
"Rapunzel, what did I tell you this morning?" Mom groaned.
"Not to slid down the railing!" I replied.
"I told you to stop. So stop!" Mom yelled as she handed us a plate of pizza.
"Sorry!" I smiled.
"Okay, I'm going out with the adults tonight, so I won't be home until late. I don't think I need to check on you girls tonight since Elsa's parents said that she's always been a good kid. I love you and make smart choices. I will check on you though before I leave for work in the morning." Mom said as she kissed my head.
"What adults?" I asked.
"Elisabeth and Henry, Ellie and John, and Greg. The usual." Mom smiled.
"Okay, goodbye mom!" I waved.
"Bye girls! Remember smart choices, don't think about sneaking out or anything crazy." Mom smiled.
"Mom, I've never snuck out." I lied.
"I know, but don't start tonight." Mom smiled as she shut the door.
"Yes! We can leave earlier than midnight!" I cheered.
"You're welcome." Elsa smirked.
"Thanks for being a goody two shoes Elsa!" I smiled. We finished eating and went back to my room. "You should text Merida to get here around 11:30."
"Okay!" Elsa said.
*Anna's POV*
Hiccup and I rode with Merida to her house. It was frightening. She sped down gravel roads and took sharp turns. We finally got out of the car and I kissed the ground, happy to have made it there safely. "Oh you big baby! I didn't even drive as fast as I usually do." Merida replied.
"I thought I was going to die!" I cried. We soon went into her house and it was crazy.
"Elinor! Have you seen the boys?" Fergus, Merida's dad, yelled across the house.
"They're probably outside doing God knows what!" Elinor yelled in reply.
"Let's just go to my room." Merida smiled. We quickly followed her upstairs to her room. When we opened the door, we saw the three boys. "Get out you three devils!" Merida yelled. They quickly ran out of the room laughing. Merida flopped onto her bed. "Hiccup would you lock the door?"
"Sure." Hiccup chuckled.
"So, are we just waiting until midnight to do something or?" I asked.
"I don't know. How was today Anna? Anything exciting?" Merida asked.
"Not much, being a sophomore is pretty boring." I giggled.
"Well, being a junior isn't much better." Hiccup said.
"Well today was exciting for you Hiccup." Merida said.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Eugene wrote me an apology note!" Hiccup cheered.
"Seriously! Did he mean it? Does he want to be friends?" I quickly asked.
"Elsa asked Eugene if he meant it and he said he did." Hiccup chuckled.
"That is amazing! No, it's better than amazing! Stupendous!" I cheered.
"Anna calm down. It's just a note." Merida laughed.
"Yeah, but it's a note that he should have wrote three years ago. So this means that he's been thinking about it for three years." I smiled.
"That's a long time." Merida chuckled.
"I'm just so happy!" I laughed. Soon, it was time for dinner. We had mashed potatoes and gravy, roast beef, and corn. "This is really good!" I smiled.
"Thank you Anna." Elinor smiled as she politely cut her meat while across the table, the boys ate it like wild beasts. "Boys! Manners." Elinor said. The rolled their eyes and cut one slice. We finished eating and Elinor made cookies so we had a few. Well, a lot.
"These are delicious!" I cheered.
"Thank you." Elinor smiled as she put our plates in the dishwasher. We ran up to Merida's room and saw that she had a text from Elsa.
"Elsa said that we need to be there around 11:30." Merida read.
"Yes! We're getting the party started earlier. But I don't know much about Rapunzel. What's she like?" I asked.
"She's pretty, smart, nice, and it was her idea for them to sneak out." Merida chuckled.
"I thought it was yours!" I smiled.
"No, Rapunzel came up with it." Merida smiled. Eventually, we snuck out of the house and got in Merida's car and drove to town. Elsa sent us her location and we arrived at Rapunzel's house. We went to the back window and threw three rocks. The window opened and showed Rapunzel's face.
"Hey guys!" Rapunzel smiled.
"Hey!" I said.
"Rapunzel we don't have to do this." Elsa said.
"Yes we do. We are going to have some fun!" Rapunzel cheered.
"Are you sure you want to disobey your mom?" Elsa asked.
"I've done it plenty of times. Besides, isn't that perfect girl gone?" Rapunzel reasoned. Whatever she just said made up Elsa's mind.
"Okay. Let's go." Elsa said. Rapunzel put a rope out her window and climbed down.
"Let's go Elsa!" Rapunzel yelled as reached the bottom. Elsa looked hesitate at first, then she climbed down. "Okay, now we can't drive." Rapunzel started.
"Why not?" Merida asked.
"We have neighbors. Our neighbors know I can't be out past 10:00 so they'll tell on me. So, we have to walk. Don't worry, it's not far from here. It's about a couple blocks." Rapunzel said.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Hiccup smiled. Rapunzel smiled and led the way. Eventually we made it to a cosy looking house. All of the light were off.
"Where are we?" I asked.
"It's a surprise." Rapunzel smiled. She led us to the back and started pounding on the window.
"Rapunzel, are we breaking into someone's house?" Merida said stunned.
"No, this is where the party is!" Rapunzel yelled as she kicked between words.
"The lights are off! No one is-" Hiccup started but was interrupted by a window opening.
