Chapter 5: Landed
Adrien and his father always flew first class when he conducted business away from home, often stringing Adrien along for photo-shoots all over different parts of the world, but despite the comfort it was paid to bring Adrien couldn't relax knowing he was so close to home.
The flight hostess walked towards him, pushing a trolley filled with different bottles of wine, ice cubes and expensive, crystal glasses. "Good morning, Sir. Would you like anything to drink?"
He leaned closer to the trolley and eyed the labels anxiously. He pointed to a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and smiled. "That one, if you wouldn't mind." She nodded, pulled the bottle from the top and ducked down for a glass.
"Would you like ice with that or –," Adrien grabbed the bottle from her outstretched hand and twisted the cap off with his forearm. It fell onto the carpet quietly and he took a gulp, the alcohol burning as it ran down his throat.
Wiping his mouth, Adrien smiled back up at her and tried his hardest to fight the shameful blush creeping up his neck. "This is fine thank you."
The hostess looked appalled and moved slowly after that, eyeing him worriedly as she pushed the trolley to the next row of passengers a few seats behind him.
Plagg snickered from inside his jacket and peered his head out, "I know you feel guilty and all, but this hardly looks like a punishment."
"I can't help it," he grumbled, taking another sip from the bottle. He sighed and sunk back into the chair, "All I can think about is how they'll react when they see me. I mean, I know I phoned Nino to tell him I was coming over, but he didn't exactly sound thrilled to hear from me."
"Didn't the air head already say she's coming to pick you up?" asked Plagg.
Adrien huffed, "Don't talk about Chloe like that. I know she's not the nicest person, but she's been really good to me, especially considering how I just took off." He eyed the bottle of white wine, thinking back to all the time he'd spent with Chloe as a child.
He was there for her, even more so when her mother abandoned her, and she'd returned the favor when his own mother was no longer a part of his life –when she'd died.
"She's a really good friend," he mumbled.
Plagg gave him a pointed look and crossed his arms over his tiny chest. "From my understanding that's not what she thinks she is. Remember all the times she tried to feel you up? I had to dodge her hand every time it moved up your shirt. Do you know how hard that was?"
"How can I forget?" he muttered, "You keep reminding me?"
"I'm glad that other girl always came when she did. It was really considering biting her ugly looking nails." Adrien didn't know whether Plagg was serious or acting like his usual self, but images of Marinette immediately flooded his mind.
She was always so good to him, going out of her way to him a Christmas present and giving him her lucky charm the time of the tournament. She was kind, considerate and sweet –at least the times she was actually around him.
All the guys in class seemed to like her at one point or another and Adrien couldn't help but wonder whether or not she was seeing someone new.
Plagg snuggled back into Adrien's chest and groaned. "How long is this flight anyway? We've been flying for hours."
"Don't exaggerate," he replied, "It won't be that long." And that's what scared Adrien most.
He took another sip from the bottle to numb his nerves and Plagg perked up suddenly, pushing against his chest and staring at the bottle in surprise. "I just realized something," he said, "Doesn't wine usually come with cheese?"
Adrien didn't expect a parade when he walked out of customs to be greeted, but with only Chloe and Sabrina there, he couldn't help but feel disappointed.
"Adrikins!" she gushed, running up to him and jumping in his arms. He dropped his bags and latched onto her quickly, careful not to let her fall and leaned his head back when he realized how close her face was to his. "I'm so glad to see you back!"
"You too, Chloe," he replied, setting her gently on her feet. Sabrina rushed forward to collect his luggage, but before he could tell her it wasn't necessary, Chloe pulled him forward by the scruff of his collar.
"You missed me, didn't you?" she asked, bopping his nose with her finger. "Tell me, was London boring without me there?"
He knew he had to be honest with her, but he didn't want her to feel offended that he hadn't considered her at all when he'd decided to return. "You could say it's really sad over there. I'm just glad to be back." And by the bright smile on her face, he knew he'd said the right thing.
But something wasn't quite right and as he stared at her lips he realized what it was. Reaching up, his hand hovered in front of her face while he tried to make sense of the scab along her bottom lip that she'd tried so desperately to cover with nude lipstick and thick foundation.
"When did that happen?" he muttered.
Chloe brought her fingers to her lip, brushing against the scab slightly and scowled. An alarming amount of wrinkles settled on her forehead. "Evil Marinette Dupain –Cheng." Her tone was something akin to the music in a horror movie, chilling and disturbing.
He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Marinette did that to you?" Chloe nodded.
It didn't sound quite right –hearing how Marinette had actively gone and assaulted Chloe. They'd had their arguments in school, but this felt like a completely different side of her. One he didn't feel comfortable knowing.
His father's words echoed in his ear: People change. And yet he couldn't help but hope he hadn't heard the complete story. People changed for the better, but he didn't think they could change for the worse. Surely Paris couldn't have changed that much.
"Why?" he asked. Chloe's blue eyes narrowed at him and he was quick to defend himself. "I just mean it doesn't sound like something she'd do. That's all I mean by it."
"Are you calling me a liar, Adrien? Don't you believe me?"
He definitely couldn't answer that one honestly. Chloe meant well, but when it came to her things always ended up worse than they were before.
"That's not what I meant –,"
"She's changed, Adrien! She's no longer that sweet girl in class. She's finally shown her true colors and I'm not the only one who saw it. She's a slut too, sleeping around while she still in school."
Adrien's ears rang and his breath caught in his throat. Her words struck home and he fought to keep his voice level. "H –How do you know this?"
The glint in her blue eyes darkened. "She has a kid and there's no way she had him after school, let me make that clear. He's probably...what, six, seven, eight...something like that." She kept talking after that, but Adrien's mind was in a daze.
He remembered the sound of Ladybug's breath in his ear, the feel of her nails as they'd raked down his back and the feel of her soft lips on his neck. The look in her in her eyes had been so meek, trusting and shy. She'd been so unlike herself –unlike the persona she'd showcased to the world.
What if he'd been searching for the wrong signs? What if he'd been looking in the wrong places?
"A k –kid?" he choked, feeling his hands shake at his sides. Chloe didn't seem to notice his distress and fiddled with her hair.
"Yeah, wanna know the best part? She doesn't even know who the father is." Chloe looked pleased with herself, her plump lips stretching into an eager smile and her eyes filling with pride.
The dark hair, the bluebell eyes, the fire in her eyes, the...
Adrien felt like he was going to be sick.
Chloe's phone chimed in the bustling airport and she brought it to her ear, scowling as she barked orders to the person on the other end of the line. Then she ended the call and placed her phone back in her purse. "The limo's here. Let's go, Adrikins."
Adrien felt like he was moving through water. Everything around him seemed to slow and his body buzzed with electricity. He glanced around, frantically searching for anything to keep him grounded in that moment with Chloe no matter how small or insignificant.
But there was nothing he could do to ease his growing pain. His night with Ladybug played over in his mind like a nightmare and the thought of leaving the love of his life alone with a son who never know him was like a kick to the groin.
Chloe pushed him in the car, slamming the door closed as she moved in beside him. Sabrina joined them on the other side and he felt the wheels of the car pushing them forward.
"Welcome home, Adrikins."
He's been in Paris for less than an hour and he'd already been a father worse than his own.
I think that's got to be the fastest Adrien's ever actually put two-and-two together. Quite a feat considering how stupid he is in most fanfictions XD Anyway please don't forget to vote or comment.
The next update will be on Friday! Stay Miraculous!
