Pete Townshend #2
The year is 1969. Autumn arrived not long ago, the time of year when you and Pete celebrate your wedding anniversary, this years being the 2nd year you are married. This is usually the time of year that Pete takes time off from the show routine and stays with you. This year, however, you are not completely alone, since you are eight months pregnant with your first child. You two are very eager and even terrified.
Because of the pregnancy, you and Pete talked and thought it best not to travel in this free time... But Pete is a man full of surprises...
During a cold Autumn's morning, you wake up and see that Pete isn't on your side in bed... You get up with difficulty, after all the baby doesn't stop moving. You go dowstairs to see if Pete is in the kitchen... When you are starting to find the whole situation is getting weird, you heard a very loud horn coming from the street, in front of your house. And than you see! A new Kombi, next to your smiling husband. Since your teenage years, having a Kombi was one of your dreams.
With a smile from ear to ear, you go to where the van is parked. Pete looks ate you, smiling. You notice something sparkling inside his blue eyes.
-- For you, my darling! -- Pete said, hugging you. -- Happy wedding anniversary! I love you so much!
-- Oh, Pete! Happy anniversary! Love you too! -- You said, putting a passionate kiss in his lips. -- But I don't deserve... I didn't buy anything for you... -- You complain, feeling bad. Pete looks at you with tenderness, putting his big hands on your belly.
-- You are carrying my son, want a better gift than that? -- He finished his phrase with another kiss in your lips. You smiled. -- Ah, and there's more! You and I will remember the old days... Let's go aimlessly down the roads in your new van!
-- Not mine, ours! -- You said, looking at the car. -- Pete... Love... I loved the idea, but... Don't you think it's a little bit risky for the baby? -- And than, you turned to face your husband with preocupation.
-- Life is made of risks! Come on, (Y/N), please... The trip won't take so long, we can leave for just five days, besides, there's still a month before the baby's birth... -- He looked at you with pleading eyes. You can't resist and give him a smirk.
-- Ok, love, you convinced me... I think new airs will be good for our baby, and for us too... -- You speak, with one hand caressing your husband's face and the other over your belly. Together, you enter the house again and Pete prepares a breakfast for you to share.
While you're eating, Pete takes an England map and, with a pencil, he starts to trace paths for you to follow.
-- We can stop in Brighton, what about that? -- He said, circling Brighton in the map.
-- Great idea! After Brighton, we can just go aimlessly... -- You comment, remembering when you and Pete started dating, circa 1963. After the breakfast, the two of you hurry to pick up all the necessary luggage for the trip.
With everything ready, you decided to leave right after the lunch. You get emotional when entering the Kombi for the first time. Pete looks at you with a beautiful smile, kissing you gently.
Pete starts the car that soon starts to move. Soon, you are away from the urban area of London. On the road, you and Pete are talking, singing, telling jokes, exchanging words of love... The wind blowing your hair, the sunshine falling on the window. Radio is turned on, playing the top hits of the year. Pinball Wizard starts to play, making Pete laugh.
-- Isn't enough to hear my song at work, I need to listen to it during my holidays! -- He said, ironically, making you giggle. -- I'll change the radio station... -- Pete directs his fingers to the radio buttom, but you stop him with your hand.
-- Oh, Pete, but I love your songs! -- You said, singing Pinball Wizard along with the radio.
-- I play it for you later... How many times you want! -- He said, blinking. You can't resist and smile at him. Suddenly, you feel something moving inside you.
-- Pete, the baby likes your song... He can't stop moving here... -- You announced with a hand placed on your belly. The movement increases. You feel a strong pain and muffles a scream. Pete looks at you, worried. -- Don't worry, I'm okay... It was just a contrac... AHH... Peter... PETER... AHHH! -- The pain increases. With one of your hands, you squeeze the handle of the car, doing the same thing with the other, but with Pete's tight. He stops the car abruptly at the side of the road.
-- Stay calm, dear, what should I do? -- Pete asked, disoriented.
-- Take me... AHHH... To the hospt... PETER! -- You screamed, squeezing even more your husband's tight. -- The baby... The baby is coming...
-- Oh my God... Wait, (Y/N), we're in the middle of nowhere! -- He said amid your screams.
-- PETER, NOW! TAKE ME TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL! NOW! -- Yours screams increased as you become more breathless.
-- Okay, okay... Hold on, my love, I'll run fast as I can! Just try not to rip my leg off, please... -- He said, putting the car on the road again. You scream loudly and squeeze again his leg. -- Okay... You can rip it off...
Burning out, Pete drives faster, searching for a hospital. The search seems endless, but, finally, Pete finds a maternity hospital in a small English town.
-- Can you hold on until we get to a bigger hospital? -- He asked, worried, entering the parking lot.
-- AHHH, PETE! -- You screamed again, a pain expression on your face.
-- Okay, let's go right here... -- He parks the van, as close as possible to the hospital entrance. He gets out of the car and runs to help you do the same. He puts one of his arms around your shoulders and the other he offers for you to grab. You walk on the rocks that lead to the doors of the establishment, when you feel something dripping on your knees. Pete looks at you in terror. -- Wh-what's that?! What's going on?! Are you okay?!
-- The wat... The waters bro... BROKE! -- You explain, increasing the speed of your steps. Pete's thin arms tighten over your back as your legs become wobbly. You enter the reception and run to the counter.
-- Good evening, may I help you? -- The recepcionist asks, writing something down in a notebook.
-- Ma'am, ma'am... My wife's in labor! Quick! Her waters broke! -- Pete speaks desperate. Meanwhile, two nurses arrive and put you on a wheelchair .
-- Calm down, sir... There will be time... The birth isn't immediate... Just fill out the paper, right after we'll take you to the birth room. The midwife hasn't arrived yet from the birth she was going to do. -- These are the last words you hear rom the recepcionist, as the nurses rush you to the birth room to prepare you.
Throughout your pregnancy, you and Pete had discussed if the baby would be a girl or a boy. Unlike the other couples you know, you want a boy and Pete wants a girl, but you don't know the sex yet. Not even the name are you sure which one you want. In fact, the baby should born only three weeks from now.
With contraction after contraction, you are put on the bed. One of the nurses gives you instructions on how to breathe. You despair when you see that Pete isn't there yet. The door opens as a lady enters... The midwife!
-- Let's go, Mrs... Townshend! -- She said, reading your informations.
-- Wait... Please... My husband hasn't arrived yet! -- You almost cry, but, than, a very disoriented Pete enters the room and comes close to you, kissing your forehead and holding your hand.
-- Are you ready? -- The midwife asks. Without giving you time to answer, she begins the procedures.
Right after that, the room is filled with the sound of your screams. You squeeze Pete's hand tightly. Minutes later, you heard a baby's cry, making you emotional.
-- It's a girl! -- The woman announces. You look at Pete, who has tears in his eyes. He smiles at you.
-- I told you... -- He said, tears running down his face. You smile too, but, than, you feel something very strange.
-- Oops! Wait a minute! Looks like this little lady didn't come alone... -- The midwife said. Pete's gaze becomes scared and surprised. You barely have time to think and start pushing again, screaming more and more. A cry, louder than the first one, fills the room. Once again, you get emotional. -- Well done! It's a boy!
-- I... I told... Told you... -- You speak, gathering all your strength, giving a weak smile, drenched in tears. The midwife takes the two babies and hands them to the nurses, who take them to a basin of water. Meanwhile, Pete comes over and kisses your forehead.
-- They are beautiful! Thanks... Thanks for giving birth to my children! I love you so much! -- He whispers, wiping tears from his blue eyes, before approaching and kissing your lips. When you are about to answer Pete, the midwife comes back, holding your two babies wrapped in blankets.
-- Here, hold your children! -- She hands you the little boy and hands Pete the little girl. Pete sits next to you in the bed, holding the baby tightly in his arms. You smile and kiss the two babies' foreheads. -- What are their names? -- The woman asks. You look at Pete as he gives you a smile and shakes gently his head.
-- These are Emma Townshend and Brian Townshend... -- And, smiling, you kiss again Brian's and Emma's forehead, kissing Pete's lips after that.
And so your and Pete's wedding anniversary trip ends. Next year it will no longer be "wedding anniversary trip" but "twin's birthday trip".
