lives
Katara watched every move Zuko made, his breathing, his eyes, his posture, it was like a completely different person. He sat straight with his shoulders back, chin up as he spoke with his hands more when he looked down at his father. His wording was different, including pronunciation. His face stayed calm and never made quick movements, he always looked at his father before speaking and always ended with sir. It seemed wrong to watch her best friend act like this.
She didn't touch the food or drinks in front of them, Sokka was still in shock to notice. How long have they been here?
"From what I remember it wasn't the west sides place to go near the docks for pick up," Zuko said as he clasped his hands on the table.
"What would you know about that? You don't know everything," zhao butted in.
"I know enough that the west side is the least reliable, the south would've been smarter, you should know zhao," Zuko drank the wine to calm down more, he bounced his leg under the table.
"It's almost like you didn't leave, I'm glad you haven't thrown away everything I taught you," Ozai seemed more pleased with his son.
Zuko was about to speak against him but held his tongue.
"It's the businesses way of profiting, there's a reason it's successful," Zuko gulped. He didn't touch the food.
"Exactly," the man nodded.
"Can I ask why my sister and I are still here?" Sokka finally spoke up and everyone looked at him.
"W-we aren't apart of the business a-and..." Sokka trailed off as ozai had a glare and Zuko looked afraid again.
"At this point your the only reason the boy is behaving," Ozai scoffed.
"If I wanted you dead you would be dead," he told him sternly and Katara narrowed her eyes.
"Then why both of us?" She asked gathering all her courage.
"Kat shut up," Zuko snapped at her.
"Zuko I thought you'd be kinder to your lady friends, where's the gentleman I raised?" Ozai taunted and he glared.
"A gentleman? You raised me as a savage," Zuko spat.
"I raised you to be strong but obviously that's just something you'll never be, big fucking disappointment," his father rolled his eyes.
Zuko shook his head getting angry at his father but kept his mouth shut knowing better. He sipped the wine again as he tried to stop his leg from bouncing.
"May I get more wine? And please get them something to clean the blood," Zuko held up his glass unamused as a waiter walked to him with the white wine. Ozai nodded as another got the siblings wet clothes for their faces.
"Worried about others?" Zhao judged him.
"I was taught it's rude to have open wounds at dinner, did your mother not teach you manners zhao?" Zuko smirked down at him.
It visibly enraged the man.
"I'd worry less about the poor and more about yourself brat," he sneered.
"You should worry about yourself as well old man," the teen hummed as he was poured red wine this time. He preferred the red over the white.
"Your going to let him speak like that?" Zhao spat at ozai.
"You both should learn to not raise your voice at dinner," Ozai looked at him and Zuko smiled more behind the glass.
"Uh oh, embarrassing to act no better than a teenager," Zuko swirled the wine as a waiter came back with warm moist towels for the other two.
"Zuko behave," Ozai warned.
"Yes sir," he sipped the wine.
"How much longer?" Zuko asked after a moment of silence.
"For what?" Katara raised a brow.
"Till we all get to go home?" Zuko answered simply and Ozai looked at the two.
"Oh you will get to go home, two of you will," Ozai sighed shrugging.
"Wait?" Sokka snapped his head while he wiped the warm towel under his nose.
"Oh yes, Zuko you know that little something everyone has to have to actually be able to leave? That would be your turn tonight," Zhao snapped his fingers with a small chuckle.
A waiter placed a plate in front of Zuko and took the top off for him. The boy stopped breathing as he stared at the plate darkly. It was a small single shot pistol with six rounds loaded. And next to it was a pill.
"Cute game, it's in many movies," Zuko sighed a little crossing his arms.
"So what, shoot one of them or we all die?" He asked looking at the two men.
"No no no, you think to cruelly of me son," Ozai waved it off. "I wouldn't put three children's blood on my hands,"
"Either finish what you started three years ago or kill your friend, I'll allow two of you to walk out of here," he smirked.
Zuko pursed his lips a little looking at the two killers in front of him. Then the two people in front of him. Sokka was still shocked as he looked at Zuko like he was some monster, both of them had tears in their eyes. But Katara didn't look at him like some beast, she looked sad, yes afraid but she knew someone was going to die. A tear ran down her face.
"Two of us get to walk free? No tricks?" Zuko inhaled deeply.
"No tricks,"
Zuko immediately grabbed the pill and swallowed it dry without a second thought.
"Zuko no!"
He looked down at his father and drank some wine as well. Sticking out his tongue to show he swallowed it, zhao looked horrified as Ozai looked disappointed. He didn't care. His life was worth nothing compared to Katara and her brother.
"So when do they get to leave?"
