epilogue
"I know dad, it's just another day at school, normal shit, one week in," a 26 year old Katara walked down the sidewalk as her hair was half up in a bun as she wore high waisted black dress pants with navy blue heels, a clean white button up short sleeve.
She stopped listening to her father and brother screaming over the phone as she waited at the stop light pursing her lips.
"Yea, I'm doing okay, it's been hard but what can you do?" She sighed softly pinching the bridge of her nose. Moving to New York only received daily calls from her brother and father.
"Yes Sokka I'll send you a picture of durk when I get home, no one else that's special apparently," Katara rolled her eyes.
"Schools scary, that's just how it is, I already cried in the car," she waved them off as she kept walking.
"I'm kidding!" She wasn't kidding.
"I love you, good bye sokka, bye dad," Katara hung up with a long groan.
She covered her eyes inhaled a deep breath as she stood outside of a school, looking at it sadly. It's to late now, but now she had to keep going. It's only been the first week.

"Alright kids, yesterday was nouns, can anyone tell me what nouns are?" A 28 year old man walk in front of a group of kindergartners with his arms crossed.
Zuko smiled seeing the children enthusiastically raising their hands pleading to answer. His hair was still like a mop but if he wanted to he could pull it back in a bun with some slipping out at the bottom.
The children only had one day to ask about his scar and they used the first day of school usually, he wasn't ashamed of it but he did sugar coat it and say he was born with it so they didn't question it much further.
His arms stayed crossed with the green shirt rolled ip to his elbows. Looking for a child that hasn't been called on as much.
"Isabelle," he picked a little girl in the back.
"Person place and thing!" She smiled.
"Perfect, so if I asked what the noun is in the title hungry hungry Caterpillar, that would be-" he trailed off.
"Caterpillar!"
"Sick," he nodded proudly giving them a thumbs up. The bell rung and he let the kids get up from the colorful carpet.
"Line up at the door after you grab your bags okay?" Zuko called as he fiddled with his gold band on his ring finger.
"Yes mr. suzano!"
He walked to the door to wait for the children to line up excitedly, he counted to make sure all kids were there.
"Alright Koda, ready?" Zuko looked at the first kid that wait.
"Yes yes yes!" The five year old bouncer happily as they followed the teacher. The boy had dark brown hair and pale skin with blue eyes as he wore a backpack with the house and balloons on the back from the movie up.
Zuko lead the kids outside and gasped when some children ran ahead to their parents that waited to pick up their children. Koda waited with the teacher.
"Look mamas here!" Koda waved. Katara waved back with a smile as she was walking over to her boys.
"Hey baby, how was school," Katara knelt down to him as Koda wrapped his arms around his mother.
"So much fun! Papa let me lead the line today!" Koda giggled as he had her pick him up as Katara walked over to Zuko.
"How fun is that, and you remembered your nouns?" Katara hummed.
"I did, it was tough," Zuko nodded and pecked her lips gently, trying to keep it professional with his wife.
"Proud You could remember," Katara giggled holding his tie.
"Your so gross!" Koda dropped his head back with a groan.
"I'm just hearing that you need more kisses," Katara tickled his tummy and peppered her sons cheek in kisses.
"You're on your own little man," Zuko put his hands up.
"How was work love?" He asked kissing his wife's forehead gently.
"Good, glad it's over, I'll meet you at home?" Katara asked as she set Koda down and he held her hand tightly.
"I'll see you at home kat," Zuko nodded with a smile.
"Help your mama with her bags okay? I'll help you with your homework when I get home," he touched the top of his sons head.
"Okay papa, I will!" Koda smiled as he was missing one of his front top teeth.
"Oh and I left you something on the table," he smiled at Katara before going back in the school seeing all his students where with their parents.
Katara chuckled shaking her head as she held her sons hand and went to leave the school.
"Your dad better not have favoritism for you in class," Katara teased as Koda lead her more.
"Nope, papa told me it's like sharing, that he can't always pay attention to me when he's working, we talk about it in the car," Koda nodded understanding.
"But that's why he took me for ice cream on first day of school," he giggled.
"You got ice cream twice on the first day of school?" Katara raised a brow at him.
"Oh monkey feathers, it was a secret..." Koda covered his mouth making her laugh.
"That's how you know you can't keep silly secrets from me," Katara spun him making Koda laugh.
—
The two walked into the apartment as durk greeted the child and mother, he was getting old but he was just as loving. Koda carried two of Kataras bags and set them by the door then tried to go play.
"Shoes," Katara reminded before Koda ran off. He ran back to the door and slipped his shoes off and went back to his toy chest.
They had a good home now, living in a good neighborhood in New York City, moving away from the town that caused both of them pain, Sokka and suki went to travel after they got married, visiting Aang in Japan, spending their honeymoon backpacking in Europe, to volunteer in Africa.
Everyone was well in life.
Katara sorted through the mail and turned to the kitchen table and smiled softly seeing a bouquet of white and pastel pink roses and other sorts of flowers. She blushed seeing a note, the way Zuko still shows her simple gestures, it made her feel like they were silly teenagers again. The way they were so in love...
"I'm glad you like them," Zuko snuck up behind her making her jump surprised.
"I didn't hear you come in," Katara snorted leaning back against him.
"That's the point," he kissed her neck with a groan after a long day. Being surrounded by children he just wanted to be an adult for once.
"Thank you for the flowers love," Katara turned and kissed him back.
"You didn't even read my note," he pouted.
"Well I made you one, ironically, don't worry you didn't miss a birthday, anniversary, etc," Katara went to her purse and pulled out a card for her husband.
"I still feel like I'm in some sort of trouble," Zuko raised a brow taking it.
"Believe what you want," she laughed shaking her head.
Zuko stuck out his tongue at her and opened the card, he inhaled a deep breath as he swallowed a lump in his throat.
"Yea, I know," Zuko whispered as he took out the picture of an ultra sound and walked over to kiss her again.
"You knew?" Katara gasped wrapping her arms around his neck.
"If you read my note love, you would've known that I found your pregnancy test yesterday," he chuckled holding her waist.
"Are you ready for baby number two?" Katara laughed with tears in her eyes.
"Kat, my love, I'm ready for anything," he kissed her cheek as he held her tightly in his arms.
"How are we going to tell koda?" Zuko whispered in her ear.
"I think we can discuss it over dinner, he's already aware of sharing, we at least have until the end of the school year till then," she smiled holding her husbands cheek gently, rubbing her thumb against his scar.
"I can't believe we're going to get another baby," Zuko laughed breathlessly making Katara squeal in excitement.
"I knew the flowers were for something," Katara teased.
"And to be fair I wasn't the one that missed our one year anniversary," he whispered in her ear.
"You said you wouldn't bring that up!" Katara gasped offended.
"Once in a while," he shrugged but she smacked his shoulder trying to pull away.
"No no no I'm not done, you also forgot my birthday!" Zuko cackled holding her around her waist.
"No that one was on your son! I thought I was going into labor!" Katara whined.
"For a day?!"
"I gave you a child!"
"Alright we're even I guess," he shrugged letting her go.
The end
