I know PicsArt is controversial. I hate it too. Beginning with unnecessarily paid features, ending with how Picsart ruins the quality of every picture.

However, PicsArt is a great app for everyone who doesn't want to pay for a programme. PicsArt has a huge variety of features especially for beginners.

Almost all of my covers have been at some point edited in PicsArt as I use it to assemble everything.

Here is what they look like before I add the text work.

PixelLab is another great editing app, unfortunately it misses some very important features like overlay options, an eraser, etc.

I love PixelLab for text work and for increasing quality. On PixelLab let's you save pictures on extremely high quality.

You can play a lot with its features, I especially like it for the texture feature on text.

All of the text work was made on PixelLab. You can see the different features like texture, (inner) shadow, stroke, spacing, etc.

I especially love the white inner shadow effect that creates a 3D look. You can also use the emboss effect for that but it's been bugging in the last few months.

I really have to start using ibisPaintX. I think it's the best option out there when used right. It's also fairly easy to use, I did this cover in like 5min. It's not a beauty but not bad either.

I used ibisPaint X when heavy editing was popular especially for icons:

ibisPaint X has a huge variety of options to edit pictures and it's a great alternative to PicsArt since it doesn't ruin the quality of pictures.

I don't like doing text work on it but combining ibisPaint X and PixelLab is chefs kiss.
