Tongue Tied

Skeppy taps away at his keyboard, his expression one of boredom. Bad has seemingly been gone forever, even if it was only 5 minutes. He paused his game, groaning and pulling his headset off for a moment. He runs his hand through his jet-black hair.

What's taking him so long? Skeppy thought, laying his head on his desk, I miss him...

Skeppy pictured his best friend in his head. Smiling at the thought of his light brown hair and bright forest green eyes. Skeppy could get lost in his eyes, even if it is only a mental picture. He wishes he could be with Bad all the time, but the ravenette would only become a stuttering mess after a while.

Skeppy was brought out of his thoughts by a faint voice calling his name from his headset. He shot up, a faint pinkish tint covering his face. Skeppy slipped his headset back over his ears and unpaused his game.

"Skeppyyyyyyy!" Bad called over his headset, crouching up and down in the game in front of his friend. "Are you there?"

"Mhm," Skeppy hummed, smiling at his monitor, as though his hyper friend could see him through the electronic screen, "Yeah I'm here."

"Finally!" Bad giggles, "I was calling your name for a while, you muffinhead!"

"Well, you took forever to ask your parents," Skeppy retorts, "At least I don't take forever to ask my parents a simple question!"

"Hey!" Bad calls, hitting Skeppy in the game. The game makes a loud sound in response, causing the teen to flinch back a little. "It didn't take that long! You are just impatient!"

"No! You are just slow!"

"Take that back!"

"No!" Skeppy sticks his tongue out at the monitor, even if Bad couldn't see him.

"Fine! Then I won't tell you what she said." Bad says, huffing at the younger's antics, "Because you are being a little muffinhead."

"No! Tell me!" Skeppy shouts, fake fear in his voice. Skeppy knew that Bad would tell him eventually. But he had decided to play along with his fib.

"Nope! That's the way the muffin crumbles." Bad chuckled, running away from Skeppy in their game as if to make a point.

"Bad, please!" Skeppy cried, drawing out his plea, "I'm sorry!"
"Hmm, no!"

"I'm sorry!" Skeppy tried again, a whining tone evident in his voice.

"What is that I hear?" Bad said, "Oh, sorry I couldn't hear you. Please try again."

"Bad, I'm sorry." Skeppy apologized, his voice muffled by the sleeves of his hoodie. "Please tell me what your mom said?"

"Oh, an I'm sorry," Bad said, giggling when he heard Skeppy groan, "From the ever-so-popular Skeppy? Oh, what a splendid day this is! A splendid day indeed."

"Bad." Skeppy stated, moving his sweater paws from out in front of his face, "Just tell me what your mom said."

"She said," Bad replied, "Drum roll please!"

Skeppy sighed but obliged with the older's request. He drum rolled on his desk, his fingers hurting a little as they thudded against his wooden desk.

"Yes! She said I could go tomorrow!"

"YES! WOO!" Skeppy shouted, his face grinning at the news. His mouth almost hurt from how large his grin was, "I GET TO HAVE THE BADBOYHALO AT MY PARTY!"

Bad giggled at Skeppy delight, the small noise causing a light pink to be dusted across his face.

"Skeppy! Calm down or your mom will be mad at you," Bad giggled, before adding "Again!"

"NO! I'M EXCITED!" Skeppy yelled, standing up and dancing around his room. Almost tripping over dirty laundry thrown throughout his room "MY BEST FRIEND IS ABLE TO COME!"

"Skeppy! Quiet! I'll be there no need to exult!" Bad chuckles, "Quiet you muffinhead."

"I don't know what that means so it can't affect me!" Skeppy retorts, giggling as he speaks. He takes a quick sip of water, scrunching his face up at the taste of it. He sets it back down on his desk, mentally reminding himself to either get a new cup of cold water or microwave his current cup.

————————

There was maybe an hour before the sun sets, this being said Skeppy had 30 minutes to finish setting up for his school-wide beach party. He hadn't gotten much set up, just bought the supplies out and had his mom go pick up the food from Walmart. He could almost taste the snack trays she bought.

Skeppy wiped a few beads of sweat from his brow, watching as the blinding sun began to set on the horizon. The ocean reflected the beams of light, the yellow and white patches contrast with the normal deep blue of the water.

"Skeppy!"

Skeppy flipped around, watching as a hooded brunet bounded up to him. He lashed him his normal bright grin. "Bad!" he shouted, running and hugging said brunet.

"Skeppy! You're squishing me!" Bad laughed, patting the shorter one on his head while pushing him away gently.

"I'm excited you're here!" Skeppy said, bouncing in his spot, his feet dug into the sand. The texture annoyed him a little, but he ignored his annoyance and continued to bounce. "Now I can have you set up the party for me! Free labor! Woo!"

"Well then I'm leaving!" Bad said, turning away from the ravenette to make his point, "Nice seeing you, Skeppy."

"No! Bad I'm sorry!" Skeppy whined, following the taller towards the parking lot. "Please come back, I won't make you do free labor, I promise!"
"Hm, maybe." Bad said, pausing and turning around to face Skeppy. The setting sun gave Bad's forest green eyes a sort of glow. His normally red rimmed black hoodie looked more golden in the sun. Skeppy tried not to blush, forcing his mind to think of other things rather than how good Bad looked.

"Please, please, pleaseeeeee!" Skeppy tried, faking a pout to make his point. He made his voice more high pitched, like a toddler or small child would be, "Pwease!"

"Fine! Just stop pouting you muffinhead!" Bad yelled, pinching the bridge of his nose. Bad closed his eyes and sighed, "How long until the other guests arrive?"
"Uh," Skeppy pulled his phone out, the screen lighting up with a picture of him and Bad together. Their smiles on the screens were so large that their eyes were squinting and their cheeks looked like they were in pain. Nonetheless, the duo were happy together.

Skeppy shook away his own smile in the present. Focusing his thoughts on the tasks at hand. "They arrive in 20 minutes," he read, glancing at Bad as he put his phone back in his swimming trunks pocket.

"Skeppy!" Bad shouted, throwing his hands out to the side, "We wasted so much time with your muffiny nonsense!"

"We're gonna waste more if you sit here and argue with me!" Skeppy shouted back, "Now come on! My mom will be here in probably 30 minutes with food. We have things to do and stuff to set up."
"Fine, let's get started then."

Skeppy and Bad weren't able to finish setting up everything for the party before the first few guests arrived. Causing another small squabble between the friends. Skeppy wasn't necessarily angry at this fact, most of the parties the teen hosts are never set up before the rest of his friend group arrives. It's a known fact around the school of the teens lack of responsibility when it comes to most things. Skeppy would hope that Bad would be used to this by now, having that his best friend usually is the first to arrive at his parties.

Once the sun had set and Skeppy's mother had arrived with a few trays of food and drinks for her son's party, the party was set up and in full swing. The last golden rays of the setting sun and the ocean breeze mixed in with the music and chatter of the high school students.

Skeppy and Bad stuck together for the majority of the first hour, before Skeppy had been pulled away by a group of kids who wanted to talk to the senior. Skeppy, while he enjoyed the attention, would much rather be with Bad. Not that he would ever admit this to the brunet's face, Bad already had an inflated ego when it came to most things.

Eventually the teen was able to get himself away from the group of people, faking an urgent bathroom break, and sneaking away without another word.

Skeppy pushes his way through the hordes of people dancing. Cringing at the smell of sweat mixed in with other scents that he would much prefer to not name. He held his head low, wishing he could block out sounds of people screaming in his ears and the music they played.

Why did he agree to this dare? Skeppy hates high school parties. The loud noises and people shoving against him. Why does Vurb always dare him to do this?

Skeppy shoves himself out of the herd of dancing teens, sighing once he is out of there. He could feel a few beads of sweat rolling down his face, he wiped it away with his sleeve.

Skeppy walks away from the group of people, finding where he had set his towel and portable phone charger (his mom made him bring both just in case) and stalks off to find a good place to sit.

It took a minute but Skeppy found the perfect place, close enough to the group where he can easily get food but also not be bothered by the loud noises of the party. He grins, laying his towel out and sitting down. He pulls out his phone and calls Bad, letting it ring until it rings to voicemail.

"Hi this is Bad! Sorry I couldn't pick up the phone! Feel free to leave a voicemail you muffins after the beep!" A beep rang out, Skeppy cringed at the noise and tried to call Bad again.

After a few tries of calling Bad, Skeppy was able to eventually get him to pick up. He quickly explains to Bad where he was, asking if the taller one would like to join him rather than deal with the loud noises of the party. Bad was quick to accept, saying that he would be there in a few minutes.

After Bad had arrived, Skeppy immediately greets him with a hug. Bad chuckles, hugging him back and letting Skeppy recharge a little.

"Tired?" Bad asks, smiling softly at the shorter. Skeppy nods, hiding his bright red face in Bad's shoulder.

"Do you want to leave?" Bad suggested, laying his head against Skeppys.

"I'd be a bad party host if I did." Skeppy mutters into Bad's shoulder, "And Vurb wouldn't let me live it down."

"Vurb is a muffin, don't listen to him." Bad replies, sitting the duo down on the towel. "Plus, he wouldn't let you live it down if you ate a muffin wrong."

Skeppy pulls away, pulling his legs up and resting his face on them, "I guess you're right."
Skeppy and Bad sit in silence for a few, not awkward or uncomfortable. A comfortable silence that two best friends could share. A kind that you enjoy. Like the knowing look you and your best friend share, when you just know what the other is thinking. The kind of comfort that makes you feel safe and cared for. Or that feeling of comfort when you know that you are all right.

Content. That's the feeling.

Content.

Skeppy's phone lights up, his ringtone filling the air. Mixing in with the mutter of the ocean waves and racket of the party. He groans, gaining a confused and slightly worried look from Bad.

"Who's that?" Bad peered over Skeppy's shoulder as he replied to the message.

"Vurb. He wants me to play truth or dare."

"We should! It could be fun!" Bad grins, two small dimples forming on the sides of his cheeks. Skeppy blushes, turning his gaze into a glare at his phone. The dim light on the screen seemed to be bright at that moment.

"This is Vurb we're talking about," Skeppy complains, "You know what he is likely to dare someone to-"

"No! We can set rules!" Bad cries, not letting Skeppy finish his sentence.

"Fine, if you really want to."

Skeppy replies to Vurb with a yes, standing and helping Bad up before the two make their way to where Vurb had told them to go.

"Skeppy," someone said, causing said ravenet to look up. Skeppy glares at them, his brown and exhausted eyes held anger at even being present for this game. "Truth or dare?"
"Dare," Skeppy grumbled, glancing to his right at Bad. Feeling as most of his anger leaves him at the sight of the brunet cuddled into his hoodie, leaning against Skeppy with sleepy eyes.

"I dare you to..." The person starts, a bit of fear flashing in their eyes as they glance around the circle. A sudden malicious grin on their face when they face Skeppy again, "To kiss Vurb."

With a newfound alertness, Bad sat up. His voice rang around the circle, "What?"

"What?" Skeppy echoed, glaring at Vurb. "What?"

"You heard me." They said, "Kiss Vurb."

"No." Skeppy said, glaring at both Vurb and the person. "No! I won't!"
Vurb grinned at Skeppy, he dug his feet into the sand, "Skeppy it's only a dare."

"No! You're the one who dared me to host yet another party, I am not giving in to this dumb-" Skeppy paused, glancing back at Bad, almost hearing his voice saying yelling language whenever Skeppy cussed. He tried to hold back a smile at the memory. "Dumb freaking party!"

"Fine, since Skeppy is being a party pooper," The person said, glancing at Bad, "Bad truth or dare."

"Truth," Bad mumbled, leaning against Skeppy again. Skeppy blushed when he felt the weight against his shoulder. Bad felt warm in contrast with his usual cold temperature.

"Hm, Bad, do you like anyone at this party?"

Skeppy felt his blood run cold, his heart pounded in his chest. He felt Bad sit up, but didn't watch the other teen as he stared into his lap. His cheeks felt hot, like they were on fire.

"Yeah..." Skeppy heard a quiet voice beside him say.

But that's all he needed to hear before he bolted off. His eyes were glassy with unshed tears, making it difficult to see. Skeppy felt his feet dig into the sand as he ran, he knew he was probably kicking it up behind him, very likely getting it in people's eyes. But the teen couldn't bring himself to care.

He could only hear Bad's quiet "Yeah." repeating in his head like a mantra. Filling the ravenet with fear and hurt. He knew Bad very likely didn't like him back. It was clear to him when Bad moved away from Skeppy.

Skeppy felt the wind blowing past him as he ran, the loud sound ringing past his ears and blowing his poofy hair back. The cold stung his bare legs, brushing against the sand plastered up and down his legs and feet.

Skeppy felt cold and salty tears running down his freckled face. He stopped and wiped them away with the sleeve of his hoodie. He felt his body growing tired from the day's event, begging for the warmth of his bed.

He looks back, seeing the blur of lights far in the distance. He felt no need to head back to the party, he couldn't bring himself to care about the humiliation that he would deal with when Monday came around. Surely almost everyone at the party by now knows about his fit. Vurb especially will cause him much distress on Monday.

Then there's Bad. Kind, sweet, easy to tease...Bad. Skeppy knew that Bad would be worried about him. Especially since he just got up and ran like that. He didn't even think to make an excuse. He just wanted to get out of there.

Skeppy sighed, gazing toward the ocean.

The waves seemed to be saying hello to him. Moving back and forth with a rhythm that you would only notice if you looked closely. The moon reflects on the deep blue, giving the areas of reflection a beautiful gray-white color. With a small tint of blue. He couldn't name the color. But it was beautiful.

The waves were rhythmic, giving Skeppy a sense of serenity. The quiet crashing was peaceful when compared to the racket of his party. Peaceful when compared to what he is sure to endure on Monday. Skeppy wished he could stand there forever. With the peaceful noise of the ocean. The salty smell that reminded him of Summer and fun.

It was serene. But he knew it would come to an end. Everything does.

The peace would end and Skeppy would be forced to go back. He knew that he would get tongue tied and wouldn't know how to explain why he ran off. He knew that everyone would make fun at him on Monday. And very likely for the rest of the week.

He didn't want to go back.

"Skeppy!"

Skeppy turned towards the voice, watching with tear filled eyes as his best friend ran towards him.

Bad kicked up a small cloud of sand behind him, no larger than the average soccer ball for a team of 6 year olds. His expression was a mix of relief and sadness. Skeppy felt a pit in his stomach grow at the thought of worrying Bad like that. He never met for that to happen.

"Skeppy! Oh my goodness you scared the bejeezus out of me, I thought you were mad at me and would never come back!" Bad blabbled, his eyes widened with each thought he gave word to, "I thought that you would get hurt and have to go to the hospital and that when you wake up you would be mad at me and wouldn't want to be friends anymore. Then your parents would get mad and..."

"Bad, I'm fine." Skeppy interrupted, hugging the taller of the two. Bad stopped speaking, hugging him back. His face had a light pink dusting on hit, matching one that Skeppy held to.

"Sorry..."

"Don't be." Skeppy muttered, his voice softening, "I should be for running off."
"No, you shouldn't," Bad retorted, "I shouldn't have answered the question."

"It was stupid of me to care," Skeppy said, his voice wavering, "I'm sure whoever she is that you like is great."

"Well-"

Skeppy pulled away, studying the ground below them. "I'm sure she is awesome, do I know her?"

"You can say that," Bad answered, his face turning to a red comparable to a tomato.

"What is she like?" Skeppy asked, hugging his torso tight. "So I can be sure she's good enough for you."

Bad sat down, patting the space beside him for Skeppy to sit. He obliged, ignoring as sand stuck to his swimming bottoms.

"Well, one stop assuming they're a girl." Bad said, smirking at Skeppy, "Because he uses he/him."

"Oh," Skeppy said, bringing his knees to his face and resting his chin on his sand covered knees. He grimaced at the feeling, but didn't change his position, "What is he like?"

"He is very funny, and loves to make jokes. A prankster you can say. He can be very cuddly, loves attention and can hardly go one day without calling me whining about how he wants attention." Bad starts, staring at the sky, "He always makes me smile though. He loves teasing me, but always is sure to not go too far with his jokes. He sticks up for me when I'm being made fun of at school, and makes sure I'm not alone when I don't want to be. Even if he teases me all the time, and picks fun at me he's very sweet. He has this smile that can light up my whole day, even if it's only there for a second. Whenever we're together, I just feel so happy and safe. Like nothing bad could happen."

"Wow," Skeppy says, his voice wavering as he speaks. "He sounds amazing."

Bad sighs, his voice quiet and soft when he speaks. Almost like a blanket of warmth and comfort "Yeah, you are."

Skeppy shoots his head up, his eyes meeting Bad's. "What?"

"Skeppy." Bad said, pausing to take a deep breath, "I like you."
"Like, like-like me?"

Bad laughs, "Yes Skeppy, I like-like you."

"Well, I like-like you too!"

Skeppy and Bad held the goofiest grin known to man-kind. Both of their eyes light up like the night sky on the fourth of July, holding enough happiness to fill everyone's heart with enough joy to last a lifetime.

Nothing could top what they both felt at that moment.

Not one thing.
