School lockdown - Soobin

This story is based on my own experience. Enjoy.

*********

"This is Kim Namjoon, the director of the school, speaking. The school district would like to ask all students and personnel to remain inside the school until further notice. There is nothing to worry about, these are simple precautions. Thank you for your cooperation."

The message is followed by a deadly silence. You don't think that you've ever heard your class be this quiet. Even the teacher, Jung Hoseok, who was usually very loud, doesn't speak.

Everybody's heard of the bomb threats. Rumors spread like wildfire in this school.

And yet, nobody takes them seriously. You've recieved multiple threats before, but none of them were ever true. Just like that, nobody gave these rumors much thought. Not until the director forbid anyone from exiting the school.

The bell rings.

Everyone hesitantly stumbles out of the classroom.

The halls are jammed with students since everyone remained indoors. You make your way through the crowd, in search of your friends.

"In case we don't make it out, I want you guys to know how much I love you!" You hear a girl say to her group of friends. You roll your eyes and continue on your way. Where could they be?

"I need to call my mom. What if I never see her again?!" Says a junior boy. The poor kid looks like he will be sick at any moment.

You quickly make your way around him.

Seriously, you don't understand why everyone is so worried. You're certain that this is nothing but a joke. Just some stupid asshat that thinks he can cancel school by dropping bomb threats. Nothing to worry about.

You are so lost in your thoughts that you don't even notice as you walk right into someone.

You loose your balance from the impact and stumble backwards, but the person catches you by your shoulders before you get the chance to hug the floor.

"Y/N?" The person exclaims, and you looked up to meet their face.

"Soobin?!"

You take a step back, escaping from his grasp.

"Be careful," he says, "I might not be there to catch you next time."

"Well, I hope there won't be a next time." You answer. "Not that I didn't want you to catch me, just.. I hope I don't walk into you again. But not in a good way, I mean, I did't want to..."

"Yeah, yeah, I get it," he says laughing.

Why are you at a loss of words all of a sudden?

The bell rings, telling you to hurry to your next class.

"Anyway," you say, "thanks! I'll see you around!"

"Bye!"

Well that was embarrassing! You think, burying your face in the palm of your hand.

You turn to walk in the opposite direction, but soon realise that Soobin is headed the same way. You awkwardly walk by each other's side until Soobin breaks the silence, "We have English together next, don't we?"

"Yeah, that's right." You answer, totally forgetting that he's in your class.

"So.. what do you think of the whole bomb threat thing?" He asks.

"I think that everyone's overreacting. I bet it's just some kid fooling around, and there's no danger at all."

Soobin shrugs his shoulders.

"Hmm?" You ask, "what do you think?"

Soobin seems reluctant to talk, "well.. you know how it all started with a threatening text, received by a student at this school?" You nod. "...I am that student."

"Wait, what?!"

"Shhhhh! No need to shout!"

"Oh, sorry."

"But, yeah... I'm the one who told the police and everything," Soobin finishes, and a chill climbs up your back.

You shake your head in disbelief.  "Oh my god. How... how are you feeling?"

"Well at first I thought it all a joke, like you said, but I told the police anyways, in case of the tiny chance where it wasn't."

You arrive to class and go to sit together in the back.

Soobin continues, "The officer promised that everything would be dealt with. But now... no one's allowed to go outside of the building, so I'm beginning to wonder.." he looks you in the eyes. "What if it's not a joke after all?"

The annoying bell rings again, indicating the beginning of class. Mr. Kim, Kim Seokjin, begins his lesson, but barely anyone listens. There are continuous whispers and murmurs all around you, followed by nervous expressions and secretive texting under their desks.

Even if Mr. Kim noticed, he didn't say anything. Even he seems pressured by the whole situation.

You keep turning Soobin's words over in your head. What if it's true? What if this is more than just a threat?

"Whoa!" Suddenly exclaims one of your classmates who sits by the window, "Look at all the police cars!"

Everyone, even the teacher, runs to the window. There are four police cars parked in the school parking lot.

"This is serious isn't it?" Says somebody. "Mr. Kim?"

The teacher seems to be at a loss of words. "E-everyone go back to your seats. Please," he says, and so everyone does.

The intercome suddenly beeps, announcing an upcoming message.

"This is Kim Namjoon, the director of the school, speaking. We have received an update from the district. All students and personnel are now to remain inside their classes until further notice, an there is to be no circulation in the hallways. Again, these are all mere precautions. The situation will be dealt with shortly. Thank you for your collaboration!"

You and Soobin give each other a knowing look.

"B-but it's lunch after this period," says one of your classmates, "can we at least grab our lunches?"

"No," answers Mr. Kim, "no circulations in the hallways."

"But I'm hungry!"

"I'm sorry, Beomgyu, but I can't do anything about that."

The bell for lunch rings.

Everybody automatically gets up, but sits back down a moment later.

This doesn't feel right.

"So are we just going to starve?" Exclaims Taehyun.

"Actually," says Mr. Kim, "I wonder..." He looks in the drawers under his desk. "Aha! I knew I still had some left!"

The teacher pulls out a bag full of suckers.

"This is some of the leftover Halloween candy," he explains.

Mr. Kim goes around the class with the bag, letting everyone choose the colour of their candy.

You take a red, and Soobin takes a purple.

"Thank you, Mr. Kim," you say.

"Well at least we won't starve," states Soobin once the teacher goes back to the front.

"Yeah, I guess not," you answer.

Instead of eating the sucker now, you put it in your bag. To save it for later.

Same kids begin a game of monopoly in the corner, others are playing cards, talking, or texting someone.

"This whole thing is crazy, don't you find?" You ask.

"Yeah," agrees Soobin. "Don't you find it funny how yesterday those kids wouldn't even look at each other, but now they're playing poker games and sharing their deepest secrets."

"Personally, I don't see what's funny here. They're scared. And they need to find comfort in something; a distraction from the grim reality," you say.

"Hmm, are you scared?"

You look at Soobin. Have you ever noticed how handsome his face is before?

"Of dying? No."

He meets your eyes and you quickly look away.

"But," you continue, "I am scared that.. if I don't make it out alive.. I'll hurt everyone who loves me. My parents. My little brother." You swallow hard. "I don't want them to feel that pain."

You can still feel Soobin's eyes on you as he says, "That's a very selfless thing to say."

There is a moment of silence where you just observe the other students.

Out of nowhere Soobin picks up his desk and chair, and moves them next to yours.

He sits down beside you and says, "Lets watch a movie."

"Uhm, okay."

He takes out his phone and scrolls through Netflix. Choosing a title is no simple task, but you finally agree on 'Train to Busan', and settle down to watch it. Soobin offers you one of his headphones.

Sitting here with Soobin mere inches away makes butterflies flutter in your stomach. You realise that any bomb threat in the world is worth this feeling.

At least you know that if you're going to die, you'll die happy.

You smile to yourself.

"Why are you smiling?" Asks Soobin.

You shake your head at him and motion to continue watching the movie.

You're not even half way through when the intercom rings again.

You pause the movie to listen to the message.

"This is Kim Namjoon, the director of the school, speaking...again. We have received another update from the school district. The school building is to be emptied in 10 minutes. The college across the street is offering you a place to stay until your parents can pick you up. I know this hasn't been easy, so I want to thank each and every one of you for dealing so well with the situation. Thank you for your attention."

"Well, I guess you were right about it being a worthless joke after all," says Soobin, putting away his phone and headphones.

"I guess so," you answer, "Actually.. Soobin, could I use your phone to call my parents? Mine's dead."

"Yeah, sure thing."

Your parents agree to meet you at the college in 15 minutes.

"Thanks," you say, giving him back his phone.

"No problem."

"So.."

"So."

"I guess.. I'll see you around."

"Yeah.."

You smile at him one last time and walk towards the door.

*****

Soobin follows Y/N with his eyes as she takes her leave.

Deep down, a part of him wishes that the lockdown would last longer, so that he could spend a little more time with her.

He unlocks his phone to call his parents, and notices a new number written down in his contacts. The person's name reads Y/N.

Soobin smiles.

Maybe this joke of a bomb threat wasn't that worthless after all.

Ahhhh I can't believe I'm done! 😭

I really wish that you enjoyed this story, as it means a lot to me! Yes, it is based on true events, but the reality was a lot less romantic I'm afraid 😅

All this to say, don't ever forget that light can be found even in the darkest places, so the next time it rains in your life, look for rainbows in the sky!

Some Soobin fanart for you, my loves! 😘 Have a wonderful day!
