Your hands move fluidly through the air, as if performing a dance.

On the table before you stands a bowl filled to the top with water.

You raise your wrists up, and curl your fingers, as if grabbing onto something invisible. Immediately, the water follows your hands like an obedient servant. The liquid defies the forces of gravity and rises into the air.

You create shape after shape, watching the water dance to your rhythm.

The sight of it is truly mesmerizing. One second, the fluid takes on a form of a snake - slithering through the air - the other, it becomes little drops of rain, swirling around in a little tornado.

You've often wondered what element out of the four existing ones (Water, Fire, Earth and Air) is the best, and you've always arrived to the conclusion of water.

First of all, water is where life began.

Second, it can take on any form from vapor, to snow, to ice.

Third, all living beings need water to survive.

Your family was so proud when you showed the first signs of being a water bender, but ever since the war with the Fire Nation began, practicing your element became harder because of the constant danger of being discovered.

You are startled by a sudden sound coming from outside. The front door flies open, hitting the wall with a loud bang, making you jump and loose control of the water. It splashes down all over your pants.

"Soobin!" You shout at your  friend, "look what you've done! I'm all wet now!"

You're about to continue complaining, but you stop mid breath once you notice the expression on his face.

His eyes are wide, his skin looks pale, and he's breathing hard, as if he just ran a marathon.

"W-what happened?" You let out, instantly forgetting about the soaked clothes.

"The fire nation.. they're here.." he answers.

"What...? Uhm.. no." There's no way you heard that right.

Your whole life you've been told that a small village so far away on the South Pole will be safe from the Fire Nation.

"What do you mean, no?" Soobin says, "A fact is a fact, so get over it and bring your ass outside, we need help!"

You're so shocked that you can't even think of a proper comeback.

Soobin disappears behind the door.

You look at the daggers lying on the table. You never thought you'd have to use them.

You're about to follow him when you realize that going outside where the temperature is way below freezing with soaked pants might not be a great idea.

You hear more noises coming from beyond the door.

As fast as an arrow, you run to your room and free yourself of the wet clothes. The fabric sticks to you when you pull it off, making you cringe.

You dash towards your closet to find a dry, crisp pair of pants. Your eyes roam up and down until they spot one on the very top.

You curse yourself yet again for being so disorganized.

At that very moment you hear a loud bang followed by quick steps coming from the living room.

A male voice shouts, "All water benders are to show themselves immediately!"

Shit. Shit. Shit.

You change at the speed of lightning, and just in time.

The door to your room is slammed with such great force, it flies off its hinges and smashes onto the floor.

You are greeted by a wall of fire so great, it fills out the whole door frame. A wave of heat meets your face.

The flames slowly disperse into the air, and from behind them shows a fire bender.

To your surprise, he's just a boy, and he can't be much older than you by the looks of him.

The face under the helmet is so innocent, there is no way on Earth that it belongs to a killer.

Damn it!

You realize that you left your daggers in the other room.

You can't use your water bending abilities to fight, because you know that the fire nation is only interested in water benders. As long as they stay ignorant of the fact that you're able to control water, you should be guaranteed a certain amount of safety.

That's the main reason why you have learned to fight with daggers in the first place. So that if the worst comes to worst, you won't have to reveal your powers.

That's also why you only practice your powers inside the house, away from unwanted eyes.

You quickly search the room with your eyes for a weapon. Not finding anything suitable, you pick up the wooden chair by your desk and hold it between yourself and the boy.

The fire bender opens his mouth as if to say something, but you don't wait to find out what. You swing the chair above your head, and take a step forward, bringing the chair down with all the force you can master.

Your sorry excuse of a weapon is easily deflected by a shield of fire that the bender puts up. The legs of the chair burn off at contact with the flames, and you are left with a smoldering, black seat.

You don't hesitate, and strike again, but it's not any more affective than your previous blow. The last part of the chair is burned to ashes before your eyes.

You are left defenseless.

The fire bender also realizes that, and doesn't waste his opportunity to attack.

You back up, barely avoiding the hot flames released by the boy.

Your back hits the wall and you know that you won't get away in time from his next blow.

Your hand automatically rises, and tugs at the invisible strings that connect you to your element. A jolt of panic runs through your mind, as you realize what you're about to do, but it's too late to stop it now. It's as if your hands are acting on their own.

A water sphere rises from a jug nearby, and just as the heat of the fire reaches your face, it launches itself at the bender, immediately snuffing out his fire.

The boy stares at his soaked clothes, dumbfounded.

Didn't expect that, did you?

Secret revealed, you don't hesitate to use your water bending skills to attack.

It feels good.

You create a wave in the air and push the fire bender down to the floor with it. After his attempt at deflecting the wave fails, he falls hard on his ass.

Meanwhile, you're already preparing for your next attack. Adrenaline is pumping through your veins, making you feel invincible.

You bring the water towards yourself, and are about to launch it forward in form of sharp icicles, but they don't fly. Instead, the water freezes around your hands as two huge chunks of ice.

The weight of the ice drags you to the ground like two deadweights. You attempt to melt the burning cold shackles, but for some unknown reason, it won't work.

You are brought back from your troubles by hysterical laughter coming from above.

You hesitantly look up to see the fire bender, back on his feet, dying of laughter because of the situation you're in.

Just when his fit seems to be over and he seems to have caught his breath, he looks back down at you, and he's caught with another wave of the hahas.

You feel your face grow hot from embarrassment.

You strain your hands against the ice, willing it to melt, but nothing happens.

Urghhh, why now?

You helplessly wait for the boy to get over the laughter.

"You fire benders are just like my mother described," you scream at him angrily. Since you can't use physical force to attack because of your situation, you refer to your brains. You aren't giving up yet!

"Oh? And how's that?" He asks, suddenly interested.

"Selfish, arrogant, cruel," you spit the words at him, "you only care for your own good, even if others must suffer," you swallow hard before continuing. " My father was killed by a fire bender for having the gift to control water."

The boy's face drops and eyes darken.

"The fire nation has brought nothing but pain to my people," you continue, "so many kids were left without their parents after you first invaded our village. I was just a newborn; I don't remember, but mom told me about that day many times. How the men in black helmets burned the houses down to the ground. How they took away all the benders. Men, women, children. Everyone. Including my father. They forced them on board of black ships that rose as high as the clouds, for us to never see them again. Behind them, they left nothing but cold ashes and weeping, broken families; one being a lonely mother with a crying child."

You blink away your tears. You don't know what made you tell him the story. Maybe because you want to make him feel guilty.

"I'm sorry.." says the boy softly.

"How can you say that," your voice shakes more than you like.

"What?"

"How can you say that you're sorry after everything you've brought upon my family; this village? 'Sorry' can't fix anything. That word is so small compared to all the pain that you've put us through, it's almost mocking."

And yet you're still more than surprised to hear the apology, coming from the fire bender's mouth.

"I never wanted to bring anyone pain," he says to your surprise. "I-I'm just a soldier obeying orders. I never wanted this war, or for people to suffer, or any of it."

You give him a mistrusting glance.

"Your words mean nothing. You are here right now, with the other fire benders, making history repeat itself."

"Not all fire benders are like that," he states, "here, I can prove it to you."

The boy descends on his knees in front of you and places his two hands on the blocks of ice around your wrists. Hot steam begin rising from where his fingers touch the frozen water.

The steam keeps coming and soon you aren't able to see a thing. As the last pieces of ice melt away, the boys warm hands touch your own, frozen ones.

The steam disperses into the air, and you find yourself face to face with the boy, mere inches separating you.

For a moment you look into each other's eyes, and behind all the fire in them, you see sincere, human emotions, and you know that what he told you was the truth.

The boy stands up abruptly and goes for the door. He puts his head through the frame and shouts, "No benders here," to one of the higher ranking soldiers. Then he turns back to look at you and says, "If I live to see the end of this war, I will come back to this village and prove to you that fire benders are so much more than the heartless soldiers everyone believes them to be."

"But when will that day be?" You ask.

"Who knows," answers the boy, "but until then, I will make sure that no child is left without a parent at the hands of a fire bender."

He smiles and turns around to leave.

"Wait," you call after him, "I don't even know your name."

"Kai," says the boy, "my name is Kai."

Before you can tell him your name, Kai steps beyond the door and disappears withing the sea of black helmets.
