"Hello, my name is (y/n) and I'll be your waitress for tonight." You greeted at the two once you made it before them. You clasp your hands politely and take a look at the couple.
The woman was quiet pretty. She had silky long hair and she looked like the girl who'd be the best shopping partner.
Turning your head to the man across from her, you already saw that he was staring at you weirdly.
"(Y/n)?" That familiar voice came from his mouth.
"Oh my god, Peter?!" You replied shockingly.
Now it all clicked. Looking at your ex-boyfriend of 5 years sitting at the table you were hosting made you catch your breath in your throat.
"How are you?" Peter asked. His voice had gone a little deeper since high school.
"I'm good. What about you?" You return the question.
"Wait, you two know each other?" The woman suddenly interrupted.
"Oh yeah. Sarah, babe, this is (y/n). We used to date." Peter answered nonchalantly. You expected a weird look from the girl you now identify as Sarah. Surprisingly, she genuinely smiled up at you.
"Ohh! That's so funny, you two seeing each other like this." Sarah giggled. You chuckled as Peter did as well.
"It's a small world." You shrug, mentally slapping yourself after you said it because you knew Peter used to love whenever you say cliché things like that. He laughed, expectingly, along with Sarah.
"Anyways, can I get you guys some drinks?" You then ask, remembering your job.
"We'll both just have some water for now." Peter looked up at you from his menu. You look back at him and nod.
You swore your breath hitched when you saw his eyes look back. You remembered how the feeling was when you two were so close, just staring at each other, saying nothing.
"Okay, I'll be right back!" You say before turning around to head back into the kitchen.
On your walk, flashbacks of Peter started playing in your head. You remembered his smile, the dorky things he'd say whenever you two would be doing homework, the science puns–oh god those puns, the way his eyes would look at you from a distance...
You almost smashed into the kitchen door from thinking so deeply. A couple waiters or waitresses looked at you and chuckled. You did the same to shrug it off.
Picking up two cups, you scooped ice from the bucket and filled them up to the brim with water.
Heading back to the table, another memory came back, making you wish you could relive it.
"C'mon Peter! It's not that bad!" You encourage the 17 year old boy to climb the tree.
You were already sitting on a thick branch, your back against the trunk.
"(Y/n) I can't climb trees–OH GEEZ." Peter yelped. Leaning over to look under you, you see Peter struggling a bit.
Rolling your eyes, you move in your comfortable positing and bring a hand down to Peter.
"Take my hand and put your foot on that branch and push up." You instruct as Peter took your hand in his. You use whatever leverage you had and helped him on getting higher up the tree.
Peter found another sturdy branch next to yours and put each of his legs around it. He was panting a little, but you smirked.
"Told ya you could do it." You leaned back onto the trunk and looked around you.
There were leaves in the way, but you were able to get a good view of the park. The city street was further down, but you could barely hear the cars.
"It's nice up here." Peter breathed, looking up into the sky. You nod in agreement.
"That's why I like climbing trees. It's peaceful and nothing can bother you." You slowly close your eyes, beginning to feel the cool spring breeze pass by you.
With some shuffling that came from the sound of Peter, you assumed he was looking at you. It was those type of instincts where you feel someone's eyes on you even if you're not looking.
"Well, maybe except for when the birds get angry." You giggle as Peter chuckled.
"Here are your waters." You place the two glasses of cold water next to the two sitting down, pulling out two straws from your back pocket and placing them on the rims of the cup.
Peter was laughing with Sarah. A weak smile tugged at your lips as you heard that joyous ring.
"Thank you." Peter chuckled, still in a fit of laugher. You smiled, almost feeling a bit of jealousy.
You used to make Peter laugh like that, but now things were different. You really didn't want to remember how you two broke up, but you miss the happy moments you two shared.
'Do I miss Peter? What the hell–nO!' You thought, trying to hide your emotions with a polite face.
"So did you two decide on an order, yet?" With your paper and pen in hand, you looked at Sarah.
"Uh yeah, I'll have the fish tacos, but can you not put the hot sauce on it?" Sarah asks as you messily write down the order. You nod.
"Yeah of course! And you, Peter?"
You watched his brown eyes scan the menu quickly. Now you really felt it. You didn't know if it was because all the pain is coming in waves from when you two were together, or the fact that he found someone better, someone who he'll probably spend the rest of his life with, someone that isn't you.
It kind of pained you knowing that all those shared memories are just reminders that hurt in your soul. They were unforgettable moments for you because Peter was someone who actually made you happy.
Now, Peter drew away from your life and the fact that it ended on sour terms made you feel a little awkwardness in hosting the table.
But it's been 5 years.
5 years ago you two ended your relationship.
5 years should've gave you enough time to heal.
5 years would already have changed a person.
But in those 5 fucking years you still remember it all.
You remember his science puns.
You remember Aunt May.
You remember his favorite songs.
You remember his favorite subject in school.
You remember–
"I'll have the pasta alfredo with chicken."
You remember his favorite food.
"Alright! I'll be back in a few!" You put off the fakest smile you could ever force onto your face before turning around and dropping the act.
It hurt inside. Everything hurt. You didn't know why, but maybe it was because Peter was your first for everything. Maybe since seeing him again made you remember what it was like to see everything new.
Maybe you never really forget your first.
