It was the last senior dance for (y/n) and Peter. After this, it was summer vacation and then college. (Y/n) was with two of her best friends, sitting at one of the round tables. Peter was with Ned, standing at the DJ booth.
"Teardrops in your hazel eyes
I can't believe I made you cry
It feels so long since we went wrong
but you're still on my mind"
(Y/n) wore the most elegant dress she could afford with the help of her mother. It was a periwinkle blue night gown with a heart shaped front. It touched the floor when she stood, but her 4 inch silver heels made the bottom of the dress rise up 3 inches from the floor.
Peter wore Uncle Ben's suit. It fit him with the help of the built figure he kept growing throughout the 4 years of high school. He also had his favorite matte black tie around his neck.
He couldn't help but notice and look at how gorgeous (y/n) looked tonight. Heck, he always thought she looked gorgeous.
"Never meant to break your heart
Sometimes things just fall apart
So here's one night to make it right
Before we say goodbye"
Peter still couldn't believe he let her go. He couldn't believe what he did had cost him a big part of his happiness.
"I need to do this." Peter patted Ned on the shoulder as he began stepping forward. Ned watched with wide eyes as he saw his best friend leave him by the DJ.
(Y/n) would never leave Peter's mind. No matter what the idea, her face would always make an appearance. So, Peter needed to get things straightened out. He wanted to get things right with (y/n).
Peter took one step at a time. He moved between the sea of people on the dance floor. He felt bodies bump into him, but his focus was on the girl in the periwinkle gown.
He made it to her. He was standing right behind (y/n). (Y/n)'s friends stopped their conversation and looked behind their best friend. (Y/n) turned around, her gown fabric making waves against the pull of her body.
She was met with those deep brown eyes she fell in love with. She looked up to them softly.
"Hey." Peter gave a shy smile. "Hey." (Y/n) replied almost breathlessly. Then the upbeat song turned into a slow one. The strobe lights turned off and now the slow disco lights were circling the dance floor. Couples were already getting together in the middle of the ballroom.
(Y/n) looked at the dim lights and Peter took a glance at how (y/n) looked. She was in awe of the different setting.
"May I have this dance? With you?" Peter put out an outstretched hand, his voice not wavering as he thought it would. (Y/n) looked down and, almost without hesitation, slowly attached her palm with his. He led them both to the dance floor, Peter making sure to not turn his back to her.
"So wait up, wait up
Give me one last chance
To make up, make up
I just need one last dance"
Just like how it used to be, Peter gently put his hands on (y/n)'s waist. Her arms slung over Peter's shoulders and around his neck. He brought her close, their chests almost touching.
"Why are you doing this?" (Y/n) managed to ask while avoiding eye contact with the brunette. Peter looked down at (y/n) and thought about it for a moment.
"Since freshman year, I saw you. Now since it's the last day here, I'll probably never see you again. I know I've messed up, but I just want to make it up to you." Peter explained in whispers down next to (y/n)'s ear. She felt goosebumps rise from her neck from Peter's breath as he spoke.
Then (y/n) rose her eyes up to Peter. He was already looking down at her as Peter continued. "Before this night ends, I just want to make things okay between us. Who knows when I'll bump into you?" Peter gave a small chuckle.
(Y/n) pursed her lips, looking at the lips she used to kiss so dearly.
Peter's hands on (y/n)'s waist gripped her a little tighter. (Y/n) readjusted her arms so her wrists were resting on his shoulders. They both swayed side to side to the beat of the song.
"So let's just make our peace
So when you think of me
You'll smile, and I'll smile"
(Y/n) found herself staring dreamily at Peter. She hasn't done that for a while and now it just felt normal to do so.
"Peter you know we broke up a year ago." (Y/n) whispered, finding herself slowly losing confidence in saying that sentence. Peter raised his eyes above (y/n)'s head.
"I know." Peter gulped, his Adam's apple moving. Peter brought (y/n) even closer to him, their chests definitely touching.
"Maybe things weren't suppose to work out between us." (Y/n) looked down between them. Her heart started to beat, knowing this was probably a goodbye.
"Yeah, maybe." Peter blinked, his glossy eyes going down to (y/n)'s lips. He wanted to kiss them so bad, to bring back how it used to feel. He wanted it to be like before. He wanted to be happy.
But Peter knew he had to let go completely. It's been a great four years with (y/n), and he hated how their serious relationship ended. In his heart, Peter knew that not being with his first love might not be the best for him, but it pained him.
(Y/n) knew what Peter was feeling because she felt it too. She didn't want to let go, but what else is there for him and her? Your first love was always the hardest to go through.
The song was almost finished, and (y/n) almost let a tear slip. She didn't want this dance to end because she knew it'd be her last with him, the one who made everything her first.
"Just one song, then I'll move one
Give me one last dance
I just need one last dance
With you"
The slow song came to an end, and couples were starting to go back to their tables. But still on the dance floor, (y/n) and Peter stayed how they were. They both stopped swaying and looked at each other, their arms still holding each other's happiness.
Peter looked down at the woman he lost.
(Y/n) looked up at the man she lost.
But each of them knew it was for the best. They knew they would find happiness else were, but not here and not now.
No other words were exchanged. Only the way they looked at each other equally said the same thing.
"I love you."
