CXXIII. Donatello & Sarina - Adoption
Donatello watches Sarina as she flips through a magazine, her face downcast. Her eyes don't flash, considering that they're both wearing patches. Even so, the disguised turtle can just see the bright blue light in his mind.
He had taken Sarina out on a special date, wanting to help her take her mind off of things. With the lair full of three babies, it was just getting harder and harder for the barren cyborg to be around. That, and there's something else he needs to tell her.
"Sarina," he says, adjusting his glasses as he tries to get her attention. She gives her head a tiny nod, the only indication that she's listening. "Look...uh...the orphanage called. They've got a baby they think we'll like."
Her head jolts upwards as her emotionless face seems to slacken with disbelief. "Really?"
He smiles, revealing the gap that she loves so much. "Why would I lie to you, darling?"
"When can we go? Is the baby ready to be adopted?" she questions, her eyes filling with tears.
He nods. "Yes, yes. They want to see us today." He laughs. "It's going to be easy. Since we already finished up most of he legal stuff, all we need is for the birth certificates to be filled out and we'll be brand new parents."
She leaps up from the table, moving around the edge and practically throwing herself into his hug. He returns the embrace as her body trembles with happiness.
----------
"You're Mr and Mrs Hamato?" the nurse at the orphanage, Ms Green, asks.
Donnie nods, his hand still looped tightly around Sarina's. "Yes, that's us."
The woman smiles weakly, looking between the young couple. "I'm so sorry to hear about your predicament. For a young couple like yourselves...it can't be easy."
"It isn't, but I think it'll be better now," Donnie responds, Sarina giving a small nod of agreement.
"Follow me. I'll talk as we go," Ms Green says. Sure enough, she keeps talking as they head down the hall. "Now, I'm going to be honest, we didn't get just one baby recently. We got twins; a boy and a girl."
Sarina's eyes seem to flash with surprise. "Oh?"
The nurse's face falls. "Yes...but, unfortunately, the girl is having some complications."
"Like what?" Donnie wonders.
"There's a problem with her lungs. She's very weak. It's hard for her to breathe." She sighs. "I fear she may not last."
Sarina's hand tightens around Donnie's, her face flooding with knowing and sympathy. It speaks louder than any words, her brunet husband understanding why she's acting in such a way.
"Here we are," Ms Green says. "You can go in and see them. I'll stay back and let you interact."
"Thank you, miss," Donnie murmurs.
They walk in, seeing a crib near the sunny window. There's a little baby boy with brown hair covering his head and a little girl with pale blonde hair. Sarina and Donnie go right up to the crib, looking in at the two children.
The boy looks up at them, revealing that he has one blue eye and one brown eye. He giggles and waves his hands at the two disguised mutants, making Sarina's heart feel like it's melting. Nearby, the baby girl stares up at them without smiling, her tiny lips parted and giving her a look of wonder as her tiny chest struggles to lift with each breath. Her eyes are the same colour as Donnie's.
"Donnie, we need to take them both," Sarina whispers.
His eyes widen as he looks to his pale wife. "Two? Are you sure?"
The disguised cyborg almost glares at him. "If you think I'm going to separate fraternal twins and leave behind the one who's suffering from the same thing I did, you're sorely mistaken."
He glances behind them. Ms Green looks up from her clipboard and waves. He waves back before turning to his spouse again.
"I know, but...you heard the nurse. She may not make it," he whispers.
Sarina ponders that for a second before her lips quirk with an idea. "So...we mutate her into a cyborg; like me."
He frowns, yet even he can see that it would be an option. "I...I don't know. Every bit of mutagen we have has to go to making patches."
She smiles widely. "Good thing I know a guy, hm?" She looks back at the children longingly, then at her husband as she musters her best puppy eyes. "Please, Donnie-baby? For me?"
He sighs as an amused smirk flickers across his lips. "You know I can't resist you, right?"
She leans up and pecks his lips. "That's why I do it, obviously. Now, you go talk to Ms Green. I've got to call someone."
He smiles as he watches her practically dance to the door, moving like a ballerina as she says a hasty "excuse me" to Ms Green and ducks out the door. Seeing her happy again is making it all worthwhile.
Sarina pulls out her t-phone, dialling the correct number and putting it to her ear. It takes two rings before the person on the other end picks up.
"Sarina, is there trouble?" the man asks.
She smiles. "Hello father, I have a favour to ask."
----------
Sarina sits in the laboratory, monitoring the baby girl as she sleeps in a carrier on the table. The baby boy snoozes in her lap, a pacifier in his little mouth. Donatello walks in, holding two birth certificates and looking rather relieved.
"It's twins!" he announces, grinning widely.
Sarina's smile grows as her eyes flash, the warm bundle against her stomach making her feel stupidly happy. Donnie moves closer to her, showing her the certificates.
"Asher Austin Hamato" is written out in neat printing on the first, while "Dakota Grace Hamato" is written on the second. They both let out long sighs of peace as they see the names, looking towards the sleeping Dakota.
"DONNIE! SARINA! YOU'VE GOT A VISITOR!" Michelangelo hollers from outside.
"Send him in!" Sarina calls.
Bishop strides in through the lab doors, carrying a rather sizeable box. Sarina lights up when she sees him, Donnie's face switching from confusion to knowing in a second.
"Father!" the cyborg greets, getting to her feet. She hands Asher to Donnie. "Here, hold him."
Donnie takes the little human carefully, laughing softly as Asher grips his belt. Bishop sets the box down and accepts a hug from his daughter, a smile on his face.
"Congratulations on your new additions," he comments. "I didn't expect to be a grandfather."
Sarina pulls away from the hug. "I'm sorry to ask you to do this."
He shakes his head. "I may not be a reckless mutater like the Kraang, but this is a good cause. Much like your mutation."
"Donnie, do you mind taking Asher out of the lab while we work?" she asks, turning to her husband as Bishop lifts the crate again. "I don't want him getting fussy over the noise."
Donnie nods. "Oh yeah, we'll be fine."
The two Utroms nod to him in thanks and move towards Dakota's carrier. Donnie looks over his shoulder as they pass by, seeing that Bishop brought along mutagen in that box of his.
The purple-masked turtle takes a long breath as he lifts Asher onto his shoulder, patting the baby's back as he leaves the lab. He lifts his son to his eye level, his large green hands secure around the precious bundle. Asher looks back at his new dad with his mismatched eyes, making Donnie smile automatically. One eye like his, one like Sarina's.
"You really are my little miracle, aren't you?" he murmurs. Asher coos and places his hands on Donnie's nose. The turtle laughs and kisses his little hands. "You like grabbing my face too, huh?"
Asher giggles, still not moving his hands. Donnie grins and pecks his son's nose, feeling happier than he has in a while.
