CXLIV. It's A Small World
Raphael
Taylor takes five-year-old Copeland up to the surface, disguised with a human patch. The dark-haired girl holds onto her mom's hand tightly, looking around with wide eyes.
"Mommy, is this where Dean went?" she asks.
"When he was learning to fly? Yes," the older woman replies.
"What we doing up here?"
"I have to buy some groceries, and I thought you'd like to see the surface."
The disguised mutant nods slowly. "It's beautiful."
The two Hamatos move towards the nearest grocery store, passing Taylor's old high school and everything she had lived around when she was younger.
The grocery shopping goes swiftly, where they pick up frozen pizzas and everything the other moms put down on their list. As Copeland looks at the toys with interest, a voice from the past makes Taylor tense up.
"Taylor?"
She turns around slowly, seeing none other than her dad walking towards her. Copeland pokes her head out from behind her mom, eyes wide.
"Mommy? Who's that?" she asks.
Taylor doesn't answer right away. Mr Fuentes stops a foot or two away from his daughter, eyes creased with relief.
"I thought you were dead," he says.
She purses her lips. "Well, I'm not."
"Yeah...good."
"What do you want?"
He looks taken aback. "I just wanted to talk to you. I thought that turtle had..." He trails off, noticing the pretty girl with ebony hair behind her. "Who's this?"
Taylor steps aside, taking Copeland's hand. "Copey, this is your grandfather. Dad, this is my daughter, Copeland."
The disguised turtle frowns in confusion. "Isn't grandpa Splinter my grandpa?"
Mr Fuentes smiles warmly. "Hi, Copeland. It's nice to meet you."
She becomes unnaturally shy, waving a little bit. "Hi."
He looks back up at his daughter. "Taylor, listen, I'm really glad you made the right decision."
Taylor doesn't even try to hide her confusion. "Huh?"
He chuckles. "I mean, you didn't marry that mutant. You have a human daughter, and-"
Taylor scowls and cuts him off. "I did marry Raphael. Copeland is our daughter."
The horror on her father's face is stunning. "But...you...what? She's human!"
He points to the girl, and she frowns.
"I'm not human! I'm a turtle!" she exclaims.
"Copeland, let me handle this," Taylor whispers, trying to keep attention off of them.
The young mutant nods and glares at her grandfather.
Mr Fuentes shakes his head in confusion. "I don't...I don't..."
"Dad, you treated me terribly. I invited you to my wedding and you didn't come," she snaps. "Now, I have my daughter with me, and you still can't accept that I didn't marry a man of your ideals."
"You didn't even marry a man!"
"I married someone who is much more of a man than you ever were," she hisses.
Copeland looks up and down the deserted aisle before starting to pull off her patch. Her form turns reptilian for a moment before Taylor lurches forwards and sticks the patch back on, making her daughter return to her disguise. Mr Fuentes steps back, too shocked to scream at the fleeting sight of the hazel-eyed turtle. Copeland smirks, looking proud of her achievement.
"I told you, you mean old man."
He opens and closes his mouth a few times. "But...if you have this technology, why aren't you living among society with the rest of us? You and I could be a family again, with your...erm, other family."
"You just don't get it." Taylor narrows her eyes and takes her daughter's hand. "I married Raphael for who he is, and Copeland is the same way. I would rather live where I live with the rest of my loving family as mutants than live up here with the judgmental people of this city."
"Taylor, why are you so stubborn?" he demands.
She only smirks. "Maybe that's the only redeemable quality I gained from you."
With that, she turns and walks away, her daughter at her side.
"Mommy?" Copeland pipes up once they've paid and left the store.
"Yes?"
"You're awesome, and I like grandpa Splinter a lot more than him."
She smiles, squeezing her hand gently.
Michelangelo
Annalise and Mitch head down the street, just taking a walk. The five-year-old boy hops and skips on ahead, picking up round pebbles and other stuff as he goes. Annalise only smirks at her exuberant son, wondering what he's going to do with all the stuff he's putting in his pockets.
"Annalise?"
She stops, glancing over her shoulder. Her mother lights up and dashes towards her, embracing her daughter in a tight hug.
"You're alive! After that monster kidnapped you, I feared the worst," she cries.
Annalise pushes Mrs Hughes off of her, shocked. "Mom?"
She nods. "I can't believe it! How have you been? How-"
"Mommy?" Mitch asks, toddling over to the two blondes.
Mrs Hughes face softens as she notices the little boy with the curly hair. "You...you had a son."
Annalise nods. "Yes, I did. After high school, I went into computer programming and video game design," she explains quickly. "Then, I got married."
"Oh...yes, I know." She looks away. "I got the invitation, but I didn't think it'd be right to show up after you got kidnapped." The sadness melts away and she grins again. "But, you got away, you're safe, and now you're married and have a normal family!"
Annalise's heart sinks. "Oh...mom, listen-"
"I'd love to meet your husband! He's treating you right, yes?"
Mitch raises an eyebrow and tugs at his mother's shirt hem. "Who's she?"
"Um, Mitch...this is your grandma," Annalise introduces. "Mom, this is Mitch."
"Pleasure to meet you. Aren't you a cutie!" She pinches his cheek, making him squirm away. "Aw, he's just like you at that age. Never liked people touching your face."
"Mom, I have to tell you something-"
"We have to catch up! I'd love for the three of you to come over to my place sometime for dinner. Maybe I could go over there-"
"Mom, I married Michelangelo!"
Her mom falls silent. "What?"
"The 'Mike' on the invitation is Michelangelo, the turtle who saved me."
"Saved...you mean kidnapped! You married that thing?!"
Mitch whimpers. "Mommy, why is she mean to daddy?"
Annalise looks to her son, brushing his curls out of his eyes. "Grandma doesn't understand that mommy loves someone who is different."
"That's stupid! Daddy is awesome!" Mitch crosses his arms and pouts.
Mrs Hughes looks to the boy, noticing for the first time that his hands are more turtle than human. Her face twists as she notices the deformity, clearing her throat after a moment.
She lets out a huff. "And to think...I thought you had changed."
Annalise returns a tight-lipped smile. "Someone like me doesn't need to change, mom." She takes Mitch's hand. "We're going home. It was nice seeing you."
She turns and walks away, leaving her mother to think over her daughter's words.
