She's an Angel

Ruby furrowed her eyebrows as she heard TyTy crying.

She made her way to where the sounds were coming from, seeing Josh hugging Tyler tightly as Tyler cried.

"Daddy," Ruby said, going up to Tyler and grabbing his hand. "Why're ya crying?"

"D-daddy's," Tyler started, wiping his eyes. "D-Daddy's going t-to go away f-for a little while."

"W-What?" Ruby asked. "Why? W-where?"

"I-I'll um... I'll explain later," Josh said. "B-but right now I have to take daddy there a-and make sure he's okay, s-so while I'm doing that, aunt Jenna's going to come over."

"I-I wanna go with daddy," Ruby said.

"This is a daddies-only trip, sweetheart," Josh said softly. "I'm sorry."

"W-when will daddy be back?"

"W-we aren't sure," Josh answered.

Then, there was a knock at the door.

Josh opened it to see Jenna, thanking her for staying with Ruby on such short notice.

"D-daddy's gotta go now, sweetheart," Josh said to Ruby. "G-go give TyTy a big hug."

Ruby quickly ran to Tyler, hugging him tightly. "I love you, daddy. Y-you're the bestest daddy ever a-and I hope you have fun on your vacation. Send Aunt Jenna lotsa pictures so I can see them."

"I-it's not-" Tyler started. He then stopped himself. "T-thank you, Ruby. I-I love you too." He kisses her cheek then went to the car.

"I'll be home late, RuRu," Josh told her gently. "Aunt Jenna's gonna make you dinner and help you get a bath and put you to bed, ok?"

"I-is TyTy Okay?" Ruby asked.

"I-I'll um... I'll explain when I get back, ok?"

"Will TyTy be back tonight too?"

"N-no, baby. I-I've gotta go. I-I love you."

Josh returned around midnight that night, crying himself. He got into his own bed, holding Tyler's pillow close, wishing his husband was there with him.

"Daddy," he heard softly, the door to his bedroom opening. "D-daddy, why are you crying? I-is TyTy okay?"

"H-he's okay, RuRu," Josh said, wiping his eyes. "H-he's okay."

"Where is TyTy?"

"Daddy's... daddy's somewhere that makes him safe."

"W-why is daddy not safe here?? I-is there a bad guy here??"

"N-no, no," Josh said, shaking his head. "Daddy... daddy has something called depression."

"What's that?" Ruby asked, sitting on Josh's lap.

"It's... daddy feels sad all the time," Josh explained. "A-and because he feels so, so sad, he sometimes feels like... l-like doing not very good things."

"L-like What?"

Josh chewed on his lip, not knowing how to explain it. "Just um... things that... things that would hurt himself. S-so now he's staying somewhere he can get help a-and come back happy."

"O-oh," Ruby said. "S-so he didn't go on vacation?"

"No, honey," Josh said softly, shaking his head. "H-he's certainly not on vacation."

"Do you miss daddy?"

Josh sniffled and nodded, wiping his eyes.

"What do you miss most about him?"

"I miss having him to snuggle at night," Josh said.

"I'll stay here," Ruby said. "You can snuggle with me if it makes you feel nicer."

Josh looked at Ruby.

"I'm a real good snuggler, daddy," Ruby said. "Promise."

"I know you are, sweetheart," Josh said as he lied down, the girl lying down on his belly. "I know you are."

"I think daddy's gonna come back real happy," Ruby said. "A-and he's gonna snuggle with you a whole lot and maybe even bring you treats back."

Josh nodded, gently rubbing the four year old's back as they sat there, Josh staring up at the ceiling.

"I hope he's havin' fun," Ruby said. "Wherever he is."

"He'll have more fun when he gets back," Josh said. "A-and he'll be happy. A-and that's all that matters."

Three weeks later, Tyler came home.

He was no longer thinking of hurting himself, though he was still not completely cured of his depression.

However, he was much, much better.

As Ruby predicted, he snuggled with Josh more than ever. He took her out on TyTy-Ruby dates to go get ice cream or play at the park.

The family just felt a lot more... connected with Tyler back and happier.

"I missed you, daddy," Ruby told him when he returned. "So did daddy. He cried a lot s-so I tried to not cry so he wouldn't get even sadder."

Tyler kissed Ruby's forehead, hugging her tightly as he held her.

She really was an angel.
